Former Sledgehammer Games Boss Suggests Activision is Pushing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to Be “More Controversial and Darker”

While the only footage we’ve seen of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has been the reveal trailer so far, Infinity Ward did do a behind closed doors preview for the game at a reveal event, and at this year’s E3. News quickly spread that the single-player campaign was going to be much, much darker compared to past Call of Duty campaigns, and it seems Activision might have a hand in that.

Speaking in an interview, former Sledgehammer Games (Advanced Warfare, COD: WWII) co-founder Michael Condrey implied that the more controversial and darker tone is Activision’s doing, and Infinity Ward is being pushed in that direction.

GamesBeat: Activision didn’t show Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on the show floor this year. That’s a departure from the past. I wrote about how I saw it behind closed doors in a preview and I found it to be pretty disturbing. I also saw other journalists with similar takes after they saw it behind closed doors at E3. What is your interpretation of that?

Condrey: I maintain that video games are the most important art form of our time. I respect every developer who strives to deliver their work as an extension or reflection of their artistic vision. That said, MW seems like a tough challenge for any studio, especially if they are being pushed by publishing to be more controversial and “darker” for the sake of headlines.

Regardless if you’re a Call of Duty fan or not, chances are you’ve heard of the “No Russian” chapter in Modern Warfare 2. Judging from what people are saying so far about Modern Warfare, this year’s Call of Duty is taking that up a notch; the question is: will gamers embrace it or see it as a shock maneuver to generate more headlines.

Those looking forward to actual gameplay, the wait won’t be too long now. Infinity Ward has said that we’re “almost there” in terms of Modern Warfare gameplay.

Battlefield 5 Update 1.19 Patch Notes Now Live, File Sizes and What to Expect in Chapter 4 Revealed

As expected from yesterday’s news post, the big Battlefield 5 update is now live! This patch brings us to the start of Tides of War Chapter 4: Defying the Odds. Thankfully, the Battlefield 5 update 1.19 patch notes are also available, and can be seen below along with the file sizes for each platform, and what’s in this intro to Chapter 4.

Clocking in at 7.1GB on PS4, 5.36GB on Xbox One, and 10.9GB on PC, this Battlefield 5 update WILL NOT require any downtime, but players need to exit the game, download the patch, install it and restart, in order to see the changes reflect in-game.

For those looking forward to trying the new map, Al-Sundan, don’t forget that the map’s availability in Conquest has been pushed back, but it will be available in smaller modes like TDM.

Battlefield 5 update 1.19 patch notes:

VEHICLE FIXES

  • Airplane engine sounds no longer play repeatedly during flybys.
  • Fixed an issue where the Churchill Crocodile turret could be disabled and was unable to be repaired.
  • The FlaK 38 no longer scores points from glancing blows against an unmanned Sd.kfz 251.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed players to spot enemies with stationary weapons.
  • Added the new cooking destruction animation to the Churchill Crocodile reinforcement tank.
  • Squad leaders are now able to give squad orders while in the bottom gunner seat in the JU-88 C as well as the flamethrower/front gunner seat in the Churchill Crocodile.
  • Fixed an issue with the visual dust effect on some moving tanks.
  • The Pak40 and QF 6-pounder anti-tank stationary weapons will no longer automatically reload while the player is in zoomed mode.

WEAPON, GADGET, AND SPECIALIZATION FIXES

  • Changed the Boys AT rifle magazine to contain five (plus one) bullets.
  • A Boys AT rifle with a medium range scope now correctly shows scope glint.
  • Bipods now deploy and undeploy with better response. Previously, the game checked whether the bipod should deploy or undeploy every 0.3 seconds. That is now every 0.1 seconds.

Medical and Ammo Crates

  • Players that have selected the Medical Crate or the Ammo Crate can now be seen holding it in one hand when viewed in third person.
  • Adjusted the Medical Crate’s healing radius to four meters when deployed and carried.
  • The Medical Crate owner is now awarded healing score when the crate’s aura heals friendly players.
  • When deployed or selected, the Ammo Crate now also resupplies your teammates’ primary and secondary ammo within a four-meter radius. It also gives score for it, similar to the Medical Crate.
  • The Ammo Crate owner earns resupply score when the crate’s aura resupplies friendly players.
  • Ammo and Medical Crates now collide with vehicles. This means the crates can be placed on top of vehicles and will remain in place when driving around (in other words: the heal-mobile has returned)!

AP Mines

  • Explosion delay after activation has been increased to one second from 0.7 second.
  • Activation radius has been increased by 20%.
  • Blast radius size has been increased to seven meters from six meters to align with activation delay.
  • Max damage in blast radius has been increased to 1.5 meters from one meter to align with activation delay.
  • The explosion blast now occurs within an upwards facing half sphere that spawns 0.8 meters above the ground instead of a full radius.
  • Players can now avoid blast damage from the AP Mine if they manage to go prone in time. Going from sprinting to prone is less likely to allow the player to survive, as the transition is longer than a simple stand to prone transition.
  • Max amount of placeable AP Mines has been reduced to two from three.
  • Minimum distance between deployed AP Mines has been increased to 3.6 meters (from 0.7 meters).
  • Deployed AP Mines are now unspawned one second after the player dies and moves to the spawn screen or parrot cam.
  • Moving while prone or crouched (but not crouch-sprinting) will no longer trigger the AP Mine in some scenarios.

PIAT

  • One-shot-kill radius against infantry has been reduced to 0.25 meters.
  • Splash damage now deals a minimum of 55 damage against infantry up to three meters.

Rifle Grenade Launcher

  • Maximum blast damage reduced to 80 from 100.
  • Blast radius increased to five meters from four meters.
  • Quick-thinking players can now throw back the weapon’s grenade (similar to regular Frag Grenades). Good luck with that!
  • The grenade projectile is now also represented as a grenade icon on the battlefield, just like the Frag Grenade is.

AT Grenade Pistol

  • The damage on impact against infantry has been lowered from 100 to 98.

Other Weapon Fixes

  • The MG34 now applies skins properly on the magazine if the Double Drum Magazine Specialization is selected.
  • Improved the hitbox on Incendiary Grenades to better match the visual effect.
  • Fixed the missing reload animation for the Krag-Jörgensen.
  • Fixed an issue where the firing of the Flare Gun would be delayed after a reload.

SOLDIER FIXES

  • Players are no longer able to enter a bleed out state when getting killed outside of the combat area.
  • Improved the behavior of exiting the gunner seat of a tank while the vehicle is upside down, reducing the risk of falling below the ground.
  • Adjusted how fast the explosion detection happens when moving to another stance. This should make for a more consistent experience relative to what is happening in first person.
  • Fixed issues where the detection of explosions and incendiary damage on soldiers would be larger than the size of the soldier in multiple stances.
  • Increased consistency on soldier accelerations.
  • Increased distance at which downed players can be notified of incoming Medics (that have confirmed that they’re en route) from 25 meters to 50 meters. 25 meters is still the max for nearby Medics.
  • Players can bleed out faster in the man down state:
    • Bleed out timer speed multiplier has been increased from 2.67x to 3.2x. This means players can bleed out in 2.5 seconds instead of 3.5 seconds.
  • Players can hold on for longer in the man down state:
    • Hold-on timer speed multiplier has been increased from 2.67x to 3.2x. This means players can hold on for 25.6 seconds instead of 21.33 seconds.
  • Manual leaning can now be used in Firestorm.

MAP AND MODE FIXES

  • Fixed an issue which caused the “near end of round” music to play during the entire round.
  • Firestorm: Recently, the Excavation Site in the southwest mountains, previously deemed to be insignificant, has been the scene of feverish activity, and a large dome-like structure now covers the entire site. Large quantities of material and machinery continues to be transported to the site daily. Whatever is being built does not yet appear to be operational.
  • Firestorm: Fixed a bug that was causing graphical artifacts on the world geometry over longer distances while being in the airplane.
  • Firestorm: Fixed a bug that would enable spotting right after jumping out of an airplane.
  • Firestorm: Player-selected weapon skins are now applied to weapons found.
  • Firestorm: The Commando Carbine, VGO, and Lahti-Saloranta M/26 can now be found on Halvøy.
  • Firestorm: Ammo and health interaction icons at a distance have been added.
  • Squad Conquest on Fjell 652: Removed spawn points that were placed out of the combat area.
  • Squad Conquest on Fjell 652: Made the ladder on the British side indestructible.
  • Arras: A bunch of stationary MGs were unintentionally pre-built. This has been fixed.
  • Frontlines/Airborne/Rush: Arming and disarming the objectives correctly plays the animation again.
  • Frontlines/Airborne/Rush: Removed the falsely applied input restrictions while arming and disarming. This means the player can change stances while arming and disarming the bomb.
  • Frontlines/Airborne/Rush: Removed the fire barrels from the Mcom objectives. (Yeah, those weren’t cleverly placed.)
  • Frontlines/Rush: Adjusted the arm and disarm times so they reflect the settings from Battlefield™ 3.
    • Decreased the arm time from four seconds to 2.5 seconds.
    • Set the disarm time to five seconds. Previously, the length varied between five and ten seconds.
  • Frontlines/Rush: Adjusted the bomb fuse times so they reflect the settings from Battlefield 3.
    • Decreased the fuse time from 30 seconds to 25 seconds.
  • Frontlines/Rush: Adjusted the arm and disarm interaction radius to be appropriate for the objective size (big radius for the artillery cannon, small radius for the Mcom). This means the player can’t arm or disarm the Mcom from eight meters away anymore.
  • Rush: Removed the artillery call-in interactions for defenders from the Rush objectives, since artillery reinforcements are now present.
  • Team Deathmatch: Rebuilt the layout on Aerodrome, Devastation, and Fjell 652.
  • Team Deathmatch: Rebuilt the size of the layout on Narvik.
  • Frontlines: Changed the “locked objective” design a bit. It now shows the next flag immediately but with a lock icon above it that goes away when it’s available for capture.
  • Frontlines: Changed the flag capture times to promote more combat and less running and made them all more similar.
    • Three-flag layout – Flag capture time increased from 60 seconds to 75 seconds.
    • Five-flag layout – Flag capture time increased from 45 seconds to 60 seconds.
    • Seven-flag layout – Flag capture time increased from 30 seconds to 50 seconds.
  • Frontlines: The game mode timer doesn’t pause and un-pause during the round anymore.

TEAM DEATHMATCH FIXES

After looking at Team Deathmatch, we’ve made the decision to change the layouts on a few maps. The goal is to increase intensity and give players a more consistent experience by reducing the size of combat areas and focusing on specific map locations.

We’re very interested to hear your feedback on these changes and whether you prefer the new or old layouts.

Aerodrome
The first map we wanted to change in Team Deathmatch was Aerodrome. The old layout had interesting areas, but it was a bit unfocused and often ended up with players running back and forth, not finding fights. The new layout revolves more closely around the hangar.

Devastation
Devastation had the biggest Team Deathmatch layout. We’ve decided to reduce it as we want Devastation to embrace its close-quarter flavor. The new layout takes place in the run-down sections at the mall. This should mean fast-paced infantry mayhem!

Fjell 652
With the new layout of this map, we center around the village. The old design saw much of the fighting happening in the open, between points of interest. With this new approach, the fights should become more interesting and fast-paced.

Narvik
This vista had a good Team Deathmatch design, but it was slightly too big and made some of the spawns frustrating. We have removed the southern part of this layout to create a more intense experience.

FRONTLINES FIXES

For this patch, we’ve also looked at Frontlines. It’s one of our more tactical medium-scale modes, bringing very interesting and dynamic rounds as teams shift between attacking and defending. Many of you have voiced concerns and feedback about the mode (you know who you are), which has been very helpful.

We’ve gone over the mode and identified these areas that we wanted to improve with this patch:

  • Round length
  • Objective “ping-pong”
  • Accessibility
  • Vehicle spawning

Let’s go over them in detail.

Round Length
Previously, the Frontlines game mode timer was paused during shifts between objectives. We’ve determined that the massive variance of average round timer (and how much you can trust the HUD’s timer) isn’t worth it, and the pause function has been removed. This was originally added to make sure the round wouldn’t end during a transition.

Objective “Ping-Pong”
Some maps have had quite large distances between flags. Combined with a relatively short capture timer, this has created scenarios where an advancing team isn’t able to get to the next objective before it’s been captured by the defenders. We’ve tried to reduce this by adjusting some layouts, by improving the accessibility, and by increasing and normalizing capture times. The latter used to vary a lot depending on how many flags the map had, but that has been toned down.

Capture times have changed like this:

  • Three flags: from 60 seconds to 75 seconds
  • Five flags: from 45 seconds to 60 seconds
  • Seven flags: from 30 seconds to 50 seconds

Accessibility
Frontlines has had some problems with understandability. A lot of that is related to knowing where you should be at any given time – and that in turn is related to the “locked objective” mechanic. When a flag is captured in Frontlines, the next flag in order appears with a lock timer over it, and when it expires, the flag is activated. This mechanic is, however, unique to Frontlines and can be hard to understand for newbies.

With this update, we’re changing the mechanic. When one flag is captured, the next is immediately activated and visible, and the lock icon appears next to it instead. You can go to the flag as usual, but you cannot start capturing it before the lock has disappeared. Hopefully that will lead to new players advancing on the next objective even if they do not yet fully understand the rules of Frontlines.

Vehicle Spawning
On larger maps, spawning in a tank meant you set yourself up for a potentially very long drive. We’ve now added movable tank spawn positions, which means that you should spawn closer to where the infantry spawns.

UI, HUD, OPTIONS, ASSIGNMENTS, AND OTHER FIXES

  • Platoon emblems are now properly equipped to weapons when applied.
  • Corrected the requirements for the LS/26 Proficiency V and VI assignments.
  • Fixed a bug that stopped players from spawning in a land vehicle after having used the Staghound.
  • Improved the function of when a squad leader cancels a matchmaking instance. Previously, it wouldn’t always be applied to squad mates.
  • The Flakpanzer IV and Panzer 38T now show the correct number of seats on the “select vehicle” screen in the Company menu.
  • Fixed an issue that would render most of the screen as black, both on the deploy screen and when spawning at the start of a match.
  • The stationary MG on Combined Arms now shows the correct icon in the kill log.
  • Fixed an issue that would sometimes hinder a player from rejoining a server that they previously had gotten kicked from due to being idle.
  • Increased the distance at which downed players can be notified of incoming medics from 25 meters to 50 meters.

STABILITY FIXES

  • Made improvements to fix sudden frame drops occurring when firing a stationary cannon, or when getting shot while playing Firestorm.
  • Made general stability improvements.

XBOX ONE-SPECIFIC FIXES

  • Added a manual lean toggle/hold option.

PLAYSTATION® 4-SPECIFIC FIXES

  • Added a manual lean toggle/hold option.

New Gran Turismo Sport Upcoming Update Hitting Later This Week

Given how big Gran Turismo Sport has become, it’s no wonder that Polyphony Digital is still supporting the game with new cars, tracks and of course, gameplay tweaks. For those looking forward to the Gran Turismo Sport upcoming update, one is scheduled later this week!

Over on the GT Sport website, an announcement was made that a server maintenance downtime is happening this June 27, and it also mentions that a new game update will be rolled out too.

At the following time, we will perform maintenance on the ‘Gran Turismo Sport’ servers. A new game update will also be available after the maintenance. Please note that during this time the online services, including [Sport Mode], will not be available.

[Day & Time]
27 June, 2019, 04:00 – 06:00 UTC

* The above time is subject to change.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding.

Given how Polyphony has often waited until the end of the month before releasing a new patch for GT Sport, it seems this trend will continue once again this week. Of course, we don’t know what this update will house. If past updates are any indication, Polyphony boss Kazunori Yamauchi will tweet out a tease soon.

Once the patch is live, we’ll let our readers know.

Once the update is live, we’ll let our readers know, and yes, it will require a game patch to be downloaded and installed for the changes to take effect.

Report: Diablo 4 Being Shown Off to Blizzard Employees

If you were one of the many Diablo fans left disappointed with last year’s announcement of Diablo Immortal, there may be some good news as according to a recent report, Diablo 4 is currently in full development, and even being shown off internally at Blizzard Entertainment.

A report filed by one of the most respectable media outlets in France, Le Monde focused on Blizzard Europe’s current situation of layoffs. The article is currently behind a paywall, though users over at the Icy-vein forums manage to get a portion of the piece, which touches upon the future of Blizzard.

What about the future? Teams at Blizzard Entertainment have already been presented with the long-awaited Diablo 4 and know that a new Overwatch game is in development. But neither of these two games will be released before 2020, at the very best, and employees at Versailles have no idea if they will still be around when they eventually release. « Activision Blizzard will be making less of a profit, but this will still amount to a lot of profit », says a veteran employee.

It certainly doesn’t sound like we will hear about the title anytime soon, although this piece of news certainly does back up a piece published earlier this month claiming that Blizzard had cancelled their rumored first-person-shooter Starcraft title in favor of Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. We also reported back in February that the team behind Diablo was looking to hire more employees, so it’ll be interesting to see how this develops.

Infinity Ward Says We’re “Almost There” When It Comes to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Gameplay Reveal

While it’s already a month since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was officially announced, we still haven’t seen a second of multiplayer of it, or actual Modern Warfare gameplay. Sure, Infinity Ward says that the reveal trailer was 100 percent in-game gameplay, but it’s still nothing like seeing honest to goodness gameplay, right?

That might be about to change soon. Over on the Modern Warfare subreddit, a poster asked why can’t Infinity Ward just say when the gameplay reveal date will be exactly.

That’s a legit question, not exactly criticizing how things are being handled. I’m just wondering why they wouldn’t just say when gameplay is going to be shown. I’m sure there’s an explanation, but I can’t really think of one. What do you guys think?

According to artpeasant, who’s Infinity Ward Studio Art Director Joel Emslie, it’s “almost there,” and that people just need to “stay on target.”

Of course, it’s unknown now whether this “almost there” pertains to the gameplay reveal date or, y’know, the actual Modern Warfare gameplay reveal. If I had to wager a guess, it’s the latter since the game is set for release this October, and we didn’t get a second of new gameplay at this year’s E3.

And of course, it’s not like Infinity Ward is keeping it under wraps, either. US athletes have already managed to get some hands-on time with the game, even if we haven’t seen a second of it.

What do you hope to see from the Modern Warfare gameplay reveal? Personally, I’m hoping we see some actual multiplayer footage that’s not staged, and from a real match played by real people.

Esport Betting: Bet On CSGO, Dota 2 and League of Legends

Esport betting is not new anymore in today’s online gambling. People are now betting on their favorite sports and video game and earning real money. By the way, did you know that the eSports market is set to earn global revenues of over $1 billion by 2020? For that reason, more people are engaging in this emerging market.

If you want to bet on top video games like CS:GO, Dota 2, and League of Legends, you are in the right place. In this article, we will explore how to bet on CS:GO, Dota 2, and LoL. But before we jump right in, ensure that you have the right tips on how to bet on eSports and win big.

Betting on Major Video Game Events

Did you know that currently, there is over $3.7 million to be won in Dota 2 and CS:GO tournaments alone? For the record, this amount is available before the end of summer. Plus, there are so many League of Legends fixtures till the end of June. So yes, there is money to be won in all these sports. So, you want to win in them? Read on to learn a thing or two.

  • CS:GO

Coming across a bet on Counter-Strike is very common in the current market. And if you love this first-person shooter game, you’d enjoy the wins that come with it. Today, you can find multiple bookmakers offering CS:GO betting opportunities. You can take part in any of the major tournaments that feature eSports betting, including DreamHack, Intel Extreme Masters, as well as E-League.

One CS:GO game can last up to 30 rounds, and a team must reach 16 takes wins it. However, if a game finishes a tie, like 15-15, there will be over time that will be offered to the teams to determine a winner.

The main objective of the game is to plant a bomb within the appointed time. Besides that, more and more people are wagering on the CS:GO betting sites to win big. In this case, the customers can bet on the winner of individual matches with a chance of winning huge money. The major drawback of CS:GO betting is that you can only wager during the tournament. Once the tournament is over, you may not be able to bet.

But the good thing about this is that you get to enjoy a variety of other markets that are open during an event.

Some competitions out there will put the teams together in groups, so you get to bet on the winners and the qualifiers of each individual group. Furthermore, you can also enjoy live betting on the available CS:GO betting sites. So far, the biggest rivalry is between the teams from Asia and America. In this case, you will find bookmakers that allow you to bet on the nationality/origin of the winning team. It has nothing to do with race or anything of the sort, but just a way of helping you make money by predicting where the winning team will come from.

As of now, you can enjoy the Summer of CS:GO, where you can take part in tournaments like Esports Championship Series Finals, ESL One: Cologne, the PGL Major Kwakor, and the final tournament will be DreamHack Masters. All these tournaments will go down before September.

  • Dota 2 Betting

This game was introduced to the eSports world at the International Dota Competition, and the first prize fund was at $1.6 million. As of now, The International event currently has a prize fund of $20 million?

Today, the bookmakers are offering betting markets for major tournaments like the TI Series, Kiev Major, as well as the Asia Championships. In this game, you will have plenty of betting options. You can bet on the winning team, individual map winners, how far a player or team will go in that competition, or even the team that will slay the next Roshan.

There is always a way to win if one option fails. Furthermore, there are bookmakers that offer game live betting on Dota 2. The amount of action the players experience in the game makes Dota 2 one of the most exhilarating betting games out there.

Some of the special odds available on Dota 2 include betting on the team to claim the first 10 kills or first blood. This will also offer longer higher odds compared to the regular win/loss bets. You can also bet on the Evil Geniuses or the OG to clinch a comeback victory.

  • League of Legends Betting

Currently, every LoL player and wager is focusing on the League of Legends World Championship. It is a long and tough road that entails 12+ Summer Split tournaments. All these tournaments are available in the next two weeks. The SLO Spring Cup was concluded the other week, and the winners of Giants OTB were also crowned in that week.

Without any doubt, League of Legends is a game that has the largest online followers. There are several League of Legends Series in the US, Asia, and Europe. Plus, you can enjoy the LoL World Championship and the Mid-Season Invitational that offer wagers the chance to bet on several tournaments in the game.

You can enjoy the free live streaming or take part in the tactical battles. Plus, there are regular updates offered to customers. These are some of the things that make the game betting successful.

The customers can also place several bets that involve the League of Legends. This includes placing bets on the winning team or supporting the team that will claim the first blood. Furthermore, you can bet on Baron Nashor or Pentakill. The bookmakers out there are offering handicap bets during the latter stages of major eSports events.

Betting on these major video game sports is one thing, and finding a reliable bookmaker is another. Therefore, ensure that you choose the right bookmakers to enjoy the best betting experience.

Once you find the right betting platform, ensure that you play wisely and avoid the common eSports betting mistakes. If you keep that in mind, you can be sure of winning big on these platforms.

Anthem New Armor Sets and Skins Discovered in Game Files

While this past week’s Anthem patch didn’t bring anything new in terms of content (or in terms of fixes), it seems BioWare does have quite a few stuff planned to come to the looter shooter, and it’s in the form of Anthem new armor sets and skins!

Unearthed in the patch 1.2.1 game files by Reddit user javano_, check out the set of new Anthem armor sets and skins below.

Anthem New Armor Sets

Sweepshriek (Interceptor)

Deadbolt (Ranger)

Muscle (Storm)

Pestilence (Ranger)

Anthem New Skins

Iron Resolve
Swamp Walk
Chemical Burn
Fallen Comrade
Hopefully, the roll out of these new Anthem armor sets and skins will be part of a bigger content push out that includes new missions, game fixes and more.

Will this be enough for you to jump back into the game? What kind of content do you want to see BioWare push out in the next patch?

Gears 5 Season Pass and Gear Packs Now Gone – Here’s How You Earn Content

Tired of Season Passes and loot boxes and the like? Well, add Gears 5 to the list of games doing away with such annoyances! The Coalition has announced today that there won’t be such a thing as a Gears 5 Season Pass, or any Gears Pack of any kind!

Over on the official Gears 5 website, the announcement was made with a tl;dr summary:

TL:DR: Gear Packs are gone. So is Season Pass. You can earn exclusive customization.

Earning content in Gears is something we know many of you care deeply about. You’ve asked and we’ve listened.

In Gears 5, our goal is to create a player-first experience when it comes to in-game content, and it starts with this:

  • No Season Pass
  • No Gear Packs
  • DLC Maps are free for matchmaking and Private Play
  • Exclusive earnable content in the all-new Tour of Duty system
  • All store purchases are direct, no RNG so you always know what you will get

The Coalition is introducing a new system called “Tour of Duty” in Gears 5. Players will take on Daily Challenges and seasonal Medals to rank up, and earn customization content, which includes character skins. It’s mentioned that each path to each piece of content that can be earned is clear. And before anyone asks, there won’t be any premium pay-only content for Tour of Duty.

Given how this will have season Medals and whatnot, players can expect Tour of Duty to run in a seasonal format, which is the norm in most multiplayer games these days. Expect new challenges, rewards and more in each season.

The Coalition has also announced the Supply Drops — and before any Call of Duty fan riots, it’s not the same as in COD! In Gears 5, Supply Drops can be earned by every minute gamers play (across every multiplayer mode) that contributes towards a random item drop from a unique pool which the devs call “Supply.”

If players get a duplicate card, it’ll automatically be turned into Scrap, which can then be spent on crafting Supply items or character skills you want to upgrade.

Note that Supply Drops and Supply Drop content cannot be purchased with real-world money.

With the free stuff out of the way, here’s how Gears 5 will feature microtransactions.

In Gears 5, players can earn exclusive customization content that can be bought with premium in-game currency called “Iron,” which, if course, can be bought with real-world money. Players will also earn a limited amount of Iron through each Tour of Duty that they can spend in the in-game store.

Thankfully, the in-game store won’t feature loot boxes, or anything random of the sort. Each content found in the store is a direct purchase, meaning what you see is what you get. There will also be nothing in the store that can give a player a competitive advantage in multiplayer.

Finally, The Coalition will also introduce Boosts, which are optional boosts (duh!) that can provide accelerated progression. Here’s what Boosts will ofer:

  • Double Multiplayer XP
  • Double Character XP for Escape & Horde
  • Double speed Supply Drop Progression

Well, there you have it. Overall, it’s not bad, right? While we can’t escape microtransactions in AAA games, at least The Coalition is doing it rather tastefully, and making sure every player earns something even when they’re not open to spending real-world money.

Gears 5 will launch this September 10 exclusively on the Xbox One. Watch the latest trailer of i right here.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Contracts Release Date Announced for June 25, Here’s What You Need to Know

Found the post-launch challenges and content in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 a little lacking? Treyarch is here to deliver more, as the Black Ops 4 Contracts release date has been set for June 25! For those not familiar with it, Contracts are new ways to earn in-game rewards through daily challenges (that rotate).

Here’s everything you need to know about the new Contracts system coming to Black Ops 4:

  • Earn More Rewards in All Modes: Contracts will be available in Multiplayer, Blackout, Zombies, and World League, each with their own unique challenges to complete. Players will be able to jump from mode to mode to complete Contracts in any order they like.
  • Daily and Active Contracts:  Players will have a global Daily Contract and six additional Contracts to choose from in each of the four modes, for up to 28 Contracts available to complete at any given time. Up to three Contracts can be active at once, including two player-selected Contracts and one Daily Contract for each game mode.
  • Contract Availability:
    • Daily Contracts will refresh every 24 hours. Players must complete their Daily Contract in each mode before the refresh, when a new Daily Contract will take its place.
    • Activated Contracts will refresh at a regular interval, and any of these Contracts can be swapped out for another while retaining progress made until the Contract pool refreshes. Currently activated Contracts will never expire, and progress made toward inactive Contracts will be lost when the pool refreshes.
  • Standard vs. Hard Contracts: Players will be able to activate two types of Contracts aside from the Daily Contract in each game mode. Standard Contracts will provide a moderate challenge that can be completed fairly quickly, while Hard Contracts will put your skills to the test with more rewards to earn for completion. Here’s an example of a Hard Contract in Blackout:
  • Contract Earnings: Rewards from completing a Contract can include:
    • Reserve Cases (one or more, based on the challenge required)
    • Bonus XP in Multiplayer, Zombies, and World League
    • Bonus Nebulium Plasma in Zombies
    • Bonus Merits in Blackout
  • Reserve Earn Rate and Daily Tier Skips: On top of the new Contracts system, players will continue to earn Reserve Cases at a constant rate through gameplay. Players will also continue to earn Daily Tier Skips, which will still be awarded for the first win in Multiplayer or League Play, first Merit earned in Blackout, or for reaching round 15 in Classic Zombies.
  • Zombies Rewards: Daily Contracts will replace Daily Callings in Zombies, giving players new ways to earn Reserves, Zombies XP, and Nebulium Plasma in addition to the mode’s extra Daily Tier Skip. The second Daily Tier Skip in Zombies will now be awarded when the Zombies Daily Contract is completed.

Treyarch states that there are up to 28 Contracts available to be completed at any given time. Lastly, Weapon Bribes will be changed as well in a future game update. Treyarch will introduce the Ultra Weapon Bribe that will first rewards a Black Market weapon that the player doesn’t own (finally! After the backlash from the community!). Treyarch adds, “Once you own any variant (base version, MKII, etc.) of all Black Market weapons in the game, Ultra Weapon Bribes will then reward a MKII Weapon, Mastercraft, or other variant that you haven’t unlocked yet.”

Standard Weapon Bribes will continue to work as they are presently, and all types of Weapon Bribes will remain duplicate-protected until the player owns every Black Market weapon, MK11 Weapon, and Mastercraft in Black Ops 4.

Black Ops 4 players, your prayers have been heard, and let’s hope this is the answer.

Battlefield 5 Upcoming Update Preview Outlined by DICE

Earlier today, we got some rather bad news that the Al Sundan map won’t be released next week for Battlefield 5. While that might be the case, DICE has thrown us a bone and has given us a Battlefield 5 upcoming update preview!

No exact schedule yet when this patch will be released, and this isn’t the full patch notes, but an overview of the major changes coming.

Battlefield 5 upcoming update preview:

Please note that the following changes are a preview of what’s included in next weeks release, pending confirmation from our QA Teams. Full update notes detailing all changes will be provided next week ahead of the deployment

Vehicle Changes (Preview)

  • We’re happy to say that we’ve fixed the issue that was causing for Plane noises to unnecessarily linger following flybys.
  • We’ve also corrected a couple of issues relating to the Churchill Crocodile tank, the most significant being that you’re now able to repair the Turret after it’s been disabled.

Weapon Changes (Preview)

  • There’s been a couple of changes to the Boys AT rifle in this update. The magazine can now be supported with one additional round in the chamber (Making the Ammo Capacity 5+1), and the Medium Range scopes are now correctly displaying a glint.
  • Improvements have also been made to Bipod Detection, and you should find that these deploy more reliably now across all weapons that use them.

Changes to Health & Ammo Crates (Preview)

  • We’ve seen a good response to the recent changes made to Health & Ammo Crates and have made a few further tweaks to them in this update. You’ll now find that players who have selected the health and ammo crate can be seen by other players to be physically holding it in one hand.
  • We’ve increased both of the deployed radii to 4m and the Ammo crate will now provide both Primary and Secondary ammo (with scoring now offering values similar to the Health Crate).
  • We’ve also changed the collision behaviour of both crates so that they can be placed on vehicles, and stick during movement (long live the heal-mobile!)

Changes to AP Mines (Preview)

  • AP Mines. They’ve been a wee problem child for a while now but with this update we’ve made some changes to help address the issues faced by players. We’ll share the full updates around this in the update notes next week, but the key headlines are that we’ve changed the placement and activation behaviours.
  • With this update, you’ll now find that only 2 AP mines can be placed per person, and that they can’t be placed within 3.6m of each other. They’re also unspawned on death (provided you are not revived).
  • Concerning activation, the explosion delay has been increased to 1s (from 0.7s) with the explosion itself no longer occurring beneath the point of detonation. This means that if you’re quick enough, you’ll be able to prone and avoid blast damage.
  • There are other changes featured in next weeks update notes which speak to the increases in blast radius, and the increase in activation radius. AP Mines are still dangerous, but you’ll now have a new opportunity to evade them if you’re fast enough.

Fired Explosive Gadget Changes (Preview)

  • Changes have been made to fired explosive gadgets when used against infantry.
  • The scenarios in which you’ll encounter a One-Shot-Kill have been reduced, and the ability to throw back grenades has been added for the Rifle Grenade Launcher only.
  • Explosives fired from this weapon specifically will now behave more similarly to thrown grenades.
  • We’ve also improved the hit detection on incendiary grenades to better match what you see in the game. You should encounter less spontaneous combustion going forward.

Downed State Changes (Preview)

  • Players electing to Bleed Out can do so faster, with the time now reduced to 2.5s. Note that this won’t affect your overall time to redeploy in Parrot Cam, or Spawn Screen, but will enable you to enter this state faster.
  • Players preferring to Hold On for a Medic, now have 25.6s of hold time during the downed state, increased from 21.33s.

Firestorm Changes (Preview)

  • Firestorm players will find that Weapon Skins will now apply when playing the mode, per your Company selections.
  • We’ve also been able to incorporate Manual Leaning to Firestorm, following their introduction to Core Multiplayer last month.
  • The Commando Carbine, VGO and LS/26 can now be found on Halvoy too.

TDM Changes (Preview)

  • Team Deathmatch fans will find that we’ve changed the layouts on Aerodrome, Devastation, Narvik, and Fjell 652. We have some pretty detailed notes coming through on this that we’ll share alongside the update notes when they drop next week.
  • The goal of these changes are to increase the intensity and give people a more consistent experience when playing team deathmatch overall, by reducing the size of combat areas and also putting the focus on specific map locations.

Frontline Changes (Preview)

  • We’ve also revisited and made some initial changes to Frontlines that hopefully help to encourage better objective play in the mode. We’ll be keen to give this a good deal of focus during Tides of War in Chapter 4 to learn more about how this changes player behaviour on the mode.
  • The areas we’ve focused on for this update are changes to Round length, reducing instances of Objective “Ping-pong”, improving Accessibility, and changes to Vehicle spawning that ensure vehicles reach the shifting front line faster.

If past patches are any indication, we should get this patch either on Tuesday or Thursday next week, with the actual patch notes available a day before.

Same as always, we’ll let our readers know once the patch is live.

Battlefield 5 Al Sundan Release Delayed Due to Crashing

During EA Play, DICE unveiled our first look at one of Battlefield 5’s upcoming maps called Al Sundan. While players are expecting this to be released during the Tides of War Chapter 4 kick off, it seems that’s not happening — at least for now. DICE has made that the Battlefield 5 Al Sundan release delayed announcement in a new community update.

According to DICE, from their tests, Al Sundan is currently crashing, and they’re working to fix it, though no time frame has been given when we can expect this. Note that it mentions Al Sundan won’t be available in Conquest, so there is a chance that it could be available in smaller modes like Squad Conquest.

Our intention was to kick off Chapter 4 with the release of Al Sundan, a brand new map that’s brought from the War Story ‘Under no Flag’. Testing of the update has revealed that when playing the map on Conquest, there are instances of crashing that we’re not happy with.

We’ve made the decision today to hold back the release of Al Sundan on Conquest whilst we investigate and fix this.

For those of us who caught some of the early looks at Al Sundan during EA Play a few weeks back, the best experience on this map is found in large scale, classic Battlefield vehicle warfare. If we can’t provide the best possible version of that, our preference is to keep working on it until we can deliver the best performance.

Our teams are presently stress testing smaller modes like Squad Conquest to make sure that we can still make part of the experience available to you next week, and we’ll have on update on Monday for you all regarding this.

Good news is, update 4.0 will still be rolled out next week, ahead of Chapter 4. DICE also mentioned that we’ll get more news regarding this update soon, so expect a new post about it within the day or this weekend.

EA Says They’re “Surprise Mechanics” and Not Loot Boxes, and Thinks They Are “Quite Ethical”

If you’re a gamer, chances are you’ve encountered loot boxes at one point or another regardless if it’s a free-to-play game, or big budget, AAA title. One video game publisher who uses this microtransaction tactic is none other than EA; possibly the world’s biggest video game publisher (Activision notwithstanding).

Speaking to the UK Parliament’s Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport Comittee, EA VP of Legal and Government Affairs Kerry Hopkins says these randomized crates aren’t loot boxes, but “surprise mechanics.” Hopkins uses the term “surprise” as it compares loot box mechanics to Kinder Eggs, Hatchimals and the like.

Not only that, but in answering questions from the Scottish National Party MP, Brendan O’Hara, Hopkins comments that loot boxes (or in this case, FIFA packs) are “quite ethical.”

We do think the way that we have implemented these kinds of mechanics – and FIFA of course is our big one, our FIFA Ultimate Team and our packs – is actually quite ethical and quite fun, quite enjoyable to people.

Additionally, Hopkins doesn’t think loot boxes is the same as gambling.

We do agree with the UK gambling commission, the Australian gambling commission, and many other gambling commissions that they aren’t gambling, and we also disagree that there’s evidence that shows it leads to gambling. Instead we think it’s like many other products that people enjoy in a healthy way, and like the element of surprise.

You can hear Hopkins say these things yourself by going to the 15:43:15 mark of the Parliament broadcast.

Regardless if you’re OK with loot boxes in video games or not, it’s hard to dispute that it has outworn its welcome — and with good reason. Will we finally see EA cave in terms of putting loot boxes in its games? Based on these statements, that’s highly unlikely. But one can hope, no?
