Fortnite Player Count Keeps on Rising, Achieved Over 500,000 Concurrent Users

It looks like Fortnite‘s popularity isn’t going to be slowing down any time soon. The game’s player count keeps on rising, and has conquered another milestone.

The official Fortnite Twitter account shared the latest stats:

PCU refers to the “Peak Concurrent Users” and DAU is the “Daily Active Users”. So that’s 525,000 people all playing the game at the same time, and 3.7 million players booting up Fortnite for a game or two (or ten, in my case!).

Are you one of the millions of Fortnite players enjoying the game?

The Last of Us Part II Release Period Hinted at by Composer

The Last of Us composer Gustavo Santaolalla made an interesting comment during an interview with Argentinian radio station Vorterix.

When asked about his work on The Last of Us Part II, and how the game was coming along, Santaolalla had some fun with the question, avoiding the usual “no comment” response:

“It’ll be done in 2019. [Laughs] – No I don’t know exactly when it will come out, but a project like this usually takes a least 2 years to make. I’ve been working on it now for about a year, and after my last concert at the 28th of October, I will be travelling to LA to keep working on the game.”

He teases at 2019, a potential release date that many of us fans and video game enthusiasts predict, before then explaining how the project for him usually takes two years to make. With one year having passed, Santaolalla expects to have finished by the end of 2018, which would make a 2019 release date likely.

When do you think we can expect The Last of Us Part II to launch?

In other The Last of Us Part II news, the game’s poster features a hidden image. Also, Naughty Dog has been hiring, and the job descriptions offer some clues about future projects

Crazy Battlefield Cut Content Showcased in New Video

Battlefield games are always jam-packed with features with which to fight the enemy and capture the objective. There are usually more gadgets than I can count, and weapons and vehicle options than I will ever use. Part of the Battlefield experience is having all of those options available to the player, allowing them to play their own way.

Some features, however, don’t make it into the final games, and are scrapped during the development process. YouTuber DANNYonPC has compiled a list of the “Top 8 Scrapped Features From Battlefield“, which celebrates some of the more exciting, and downright bizarre, content which was cut.

Being able to ride a wheelbarrow may seem a little strange, but don’t go forgetting about the couch seen in Battlefield Hardline! Quite a few wacky features made it into that game, actually!

Would you like to see any of this Battlefield cut content in a future title? Or are all of these ideas best left scrapped?

In other Battlefield news, Battlefield Heroes has been revived and is now playable! Check out this Battlefield: Bad Company 2 montage that proves you don’t need a scope to snipe. Or this Bad Company 2 montage that takes revenge on annoying helicopter pilots!

Friday the 13th: The Game Upcoming Free DLC for October 13 Announced, Dropping With Double XP

Later this coming Friday, it’s going to be Friday the 13th; which if you believe some people, is a day full of bad luck, mishaps and other unpleasantness. While that might or might not be real, developer IllFonic has a lot of stuff planned for that day for Friday the 13: The Game!

Over on Twitter, the official Friday the 13: The Game account announced that aside from double XP, there’s going to be a lot of free stuff making its way for that special day! Prepare for Jason IV, Jarvis House Map, and a new counselor all to be released for free!

Not a bad move, no? Perfect for the weekend, too.

In other Friday the 13: The Game news, we reported just last month that it has entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the most crowdfunded game based on a movie. You can also check out the latest title update for the game that introduced outfits, communication emotes and more.

Sledgehammer Games Issues Statement on Call of Duty: WWII Info Leaks

Over the past few days, a lot of Call of Duty: WWII info pertaining to the multiplayer and Zombies mode have leaked due to the PC beta files being data-mined. We’ve seen the number of guns that are included in the game, and even the map list (read all leaked multiplayer details here), and more.

Over the course of the leak, Sledegehammer Games boss Michael Condrey has issued a statement about it, and while he’s not happy about it, but understands why fans would want to read up on everything and data-mine the PC beta files.

Call of Duty: WWII has been in development for nearly three years, and we’re now less than a month before launch. We can’t wait for fans to experience it on November 3rd.  With Betas, there’s always the risk that some people will try and spoil that experience for others. We have had a couple things leak recently across multiplayer and zombies. It’s disappointing for everyone involved in creating the game. But, in the spirit of transparency, we want to be up front about it. Some of the details were inaccurate, early, or still subject to change. Others we would consider spoilers. We never plan for leaks, but we also understand that it’s hard for fans not to read the news when it’s about something they are so excited to learn more about.

In case you haven’t read that statement above in full, Condrey states that some of the details gathered from the PC beta files are “inaccurate” and/or “subject to change,” which is understandable, given they were spotted in a beta build.

What we do know now though is that COD: WWII won’t have “funky pink” camos, and that the studio is “creatively done” with the game. You can also check out the official Season Pass details that Activision has announced last week, too.

Star Wars Battlefront II PS4 Pro Graphics and Frame-Rate Analyzed

While shooter and Star Wars fans might have a lot of stuff to complain about 2015’s Star Wars Battlefront by DICE, the graphics usually weren’t one of them; and Star Wars Battlefront II is no different. For those who want a more thorough look, the folks at Digital Foundry have just the thing! The channel has released a new video taking a look at the Star Wars Battlefront II PS4 Pro graphics and frame-rate.

According to the Battlefront II beta analysis, ultra HD will experience a dynamic resolution setup with 1440p as the native target. 2560x1440p is the highest value the Digital Foundry guys have seen in the beta, however there’s a catch, as the 1440p is only shown in the first 20 seconds of Starfighter Assault as the X-Wing flies into battle. Once the chaos on-screen starts, the resolution 2304x1296p is the most regular resolution in the four game modes available in the beta.

Check out the video to see the rest of the tech analysis, and how regular PS4 owners have also benefited from DICE’s technical know-how of its Frostbite game engine to maximize results.

In other Star Wars Battlefront II news, do check out what we think of the beta so far in our impressions piece, there’s also a bunch of stuff confirmed to be getting buffed and nerfed in the final game.

If you’re a PS4 Pro user, are you liking what you’ve seen of Star Wars Battlefront II so far? Remember, it’s still a beta, so some technical tweaks might be in for the game’s final version when it releases on November 17 on the PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Official Pokémon GO Video Tutorials Are Now Available, Over a Year After Launch

With over a year having passed since the game’s launch, some might say that Niantic has been a little slow in its releasing of official Pokémon Go video guides. Regardless, official tutorials have now been posted on the app’s official YouTube channel.

Embedded below are a variety of tutorials, each helping new players to get acquainted with certain gameplay aspects.

Catching Pokémon

Pokémon are out there, and you need to find them. As you walk around a neighborhood, your smartphone will vibrate when there’s a Pokémon nearby. Take aim and throw a Poké Ball… You’ll have to stay alert, or it might get away! Certain Pokémon appear near their native environment—look for Water-type Pokémon by lakes and oceans.

Powering Up and Evolving Pokémon

As you level up, you’ll be able to catch more-powerful Pokémon to complete your Pokédex. You can add to your collection by hatching Pokémon Eggs based on the distances you walk. Help your Pokémon evolve by catching many of the same kind. Choose a Buddy Pokémon to walk with and earn Candy that will help you make your Pokémon stronger.

Visiting Gyms
Advanced Gym Strategy

Visit Gyms—found at interesting places like museums, art installations, historical markers, and monuments—to stock up on Poké Balls and helpful items. As your Charmander evolves to Charmeleon and then Charizard, you can battle together to defeat a Gym and assign your Pokémon to defend it against all comers.

Raid Battles

A Raid Battle is a cooperative gameplay experience that encourages you to work with other Trainers to defeat an extremely powerful Pokémon known as the Raid Boss. Before a Raid Battle begins, a large Egg will appear atop the Gym. When the countdown above the Egg reaches zero, the Raid Boss will be revealed. Before you can battle the Raid Boss, you’ll need a Raid Pass. You can get one free Raid Pass per day by visiting a Gym, but you can only hold one at a time. You can also get Premium Raid Passes from the in-game shop. Upon using your pass to join the battle, you and up to 20 other Trainers work together to defeat the Raid Boss. If you successfully defeat the Raid Boss within the three-minute time limit, you’ll have the chance to catch an extra powerful Pokémon of your own!

Pokémon Go is available to download on iOS and Android.

Although a little late to the party, there is now plenty of guidance to help new players. Has this ignited your Pokémon spark again? Let us know your thoughts below.

New Fortnite Patch Includes General Stability Fixes

A small Fortnite patch has landed across all platforms. It includes some “general stability fixes,” and didn’t cause any downtime.

Mooney, of the Fortnite team, posted the following on the game’s official forum:

We will be pushing a rolling update tonight at 10:30 PM EST. The update will include some general stability fixes, however, no downtime is expected. Players will need to exit their client/game in order to update.

This follows the larger patch 1.21, which rolled out a few days ago. If you’re wondering what changes and improvements that update included, here’s a recap of the patch notes:

HORDE BASH – SAVE THE WORLD

  • Challenge the Horde
    • Construct Your Fort
      • Enter the Staging Area and build your Portable Horde Fort.
        • Use your custom fort in all Challenge the Horde adventures.
        • Your fort carries over to each new mission!
      • Gather wood, stone, metal and traps for your base from the new Horde mode skill tree.
    • Bring It Into Battle!
      • When your squad is prepared, proceed to the combat zone and face off against hordes of husks!

      • Gameplay modifiers are introduced as the waves progress, increasing the difficulty of your foes in a variety of dastardly ways.
        • Certain waves throw a large number of a certain enemy type at you. How many Lobbers, Sploders, or Smashers can your fort handle?
    • Earn skill points to unlock additional resources.
      • Harvesting is disabled in Challenge the Horde zones.
      • Resources are granted at the start of combat, and at the end of each successfully completed combat wave
        • Use these resources to craft weapons, place traps, and expand or repair your fortifications.
      • Nodes in the Horde skill tree increase the amount of wood, stone, metal, trap crafting ingredients, weapon crafting ingredients, and ammo dropped each wave.
    • Every member of the team can bring one Defender, and will start the Challenge with a few free Defender posts.
  • Scavenger Tickets
    • Players can receive Scavenger Tickets and Horde Skill Points upon successfully completing Horde Challenges.
      • Up to six times every 24 hours.

Riot Games Employee Let Go From Company After Toxic Comments Regarding Streamer

Last week, a Reddit thread popped up with screenshots of Riot Games (League of Legends) employee Aaron Rutledge AKA Riot Sanjuro from Discord of him commenting on Tyler1, a popular streamer who was famously banned from League of Legends for being toxic, saying that he was likely to die of a coke overdose or testicular cancer.

Sanjuro at first did not apologize and instead attempted to brush off his comments by saying “Dude cmon. That’s my personal take on the situation. I don’t speak for the company on live chat.. I’m my own person,” which was then followed by an apology stating:

Reddit, League Players, Tyler – I displayed a gross error in judgement last night and whole-heartedly apologize for my comments,” he wrote. “They were out of line, and not what any of you deserve to hear, especially from a Rioter. I’ll be taking time away from Reddit, discord and in game chat to reflect on how I communicate with players. Sorry again for the insults and the language.

Riot later posted their own apology to Tyler1 and the community and stated they would address the actions internally. And internally they did. After about a week it was discovered via Twitter, Linkedin, and a Facebook post by Aaron himself that he is no longer working at Riot due to the comments he made.

The ironic part of this entire situation is with how mature Tyler1, who again is notorious for being toxic and flaming others (albeit he has proclaimed he is reformed), responded to the comments on Twitter by saying “It really sucks that some people still hold a massive grudge vs old T1 and refuse to acknowledge I’ve changed,” and that he holds no ill will against Sanjuro because “shit happens.”

What’s your take on the situation? Let us know in the comment section below.

Bungie Asking Your Suggestions on What You Want to See in the First Destiny 2 DLC

With Bungie announcing the first Destiny 2 DLC, “Curse of Osiris,” a few weeks ago, some might have assumed that the studio has it all figured out when it comes to post-launch content. While that might be the case, Bungie is still all ears as to what the Destiny 2 fanbase wants in terms of expansions.

Over on Twitter, Game Director Christopher Barrett asked fans what they wanted to see in the first Destiny 2 DLC.

What would you like to see in Destiny 2’s first expansion? More loot? More enemy types? More story elements? Let Bungie know, so they can get it right.

In other Destiny 2 news, we posted a Destiny 2 Leviathan Raid exploit yesterday that should make things easier to kill of that final boss. We also have a top five Destiny 2 Easter eggs video that you might find interesting as well.

Call of Duty: WWII Gun Camos Won’t Have “Funky Pink” and Will Be “Authentic”

Did you like those outrageous gun camos in past Call of Duty games? You know, the pink, neon green and the like? If so, you’re in for some bad news. Apparently, that won’t make the cut in Call of Duty: WWII. Over on Twitter, Sledgehammer Games boss Michael Condrey answered a fan that there won’t be any “funky pink camos” in COD: WWII.

With COD: WWII development “creatively done,” that means there’s no chance of any funky camos to make the cut — at least at launch. Make sure to check the massive COD: WWII Zombies mode leak we posted yesterday to know about the weapons, perks and more that’ll be available in the mode.

Are you disappointed or relieved at this news? Personally, I think it might be a step in the right direction given how silly gun camos have been in the past. Then again, it’s all about player choice, right?

Star Wars Battlefront II Beta Impressions – This Is the Star Wars Game You’re Looking For

When EA and DICE released a new-look, reboot of Star Wars Battlefront in 2015, it sold quite well, and it was liked by critics, too. However, for a lot of shooter fans, or even Star Wars fanatics, Star Wars Battlefront was a disappointment. Whether it’s the wafer-thin progression system, Heroes and vehicles only obtainable by jostling with other teammates to pick them up, Battlefront was OK, but there was a lot that needed to be improved.

Enter: Star Wars Battlefront II. Developer DICE seems to have taken almost all the complaints to heart and made a conscious effort to make sure Battlefront II doesn’t fall into the same quagmire that its predecessor did. Meatier progression and unlocks? Check. More maps? Check. Proper space battles? Check. Based on what we played on the beta, this is the Star Wars Battlefront game that should have come out in 2015, but it’s better late than never, right?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=SGtmvGoNUms

Class Is in Session!

What makes Battlefront II different from the 2015 version when it comes to core gameplay mechanics are the classes that the game now employs. Gone are the super tight focus on Star Cards (more on that later), but instead, each class has specific abilities, and class-specific weaponry. Now, players can choose to be an Assault (someone at the frontlines), a Heavy (tank), an Officer (can deploy turrets, buff teammates), or a Specialist (sniper, recon). Don’t expect medics, or any Battlefield-like abilities though. Battlefront II focuses on combat, and the classes are slanted in that direction for better or worse.

In the beta, all the classes are getting some serious play time from players based on what I’ve seen so far — expect for the Officer class, who’s clearly in need of a buff. The Officer’s turrets don’t do enough damage, nor is his buff enough of a payoff in place of the other special abilities the other classes have.

Overall, though, the class system is loads better than having none at all. It gives the game a more focused multiplayer experience, and an actual identity to what it is. It remains to be seen whether fans will embrace this major change in the gameplay, but so far so good, DICE seems to be headed in the right direction.

Galactic Assault

In the Star Wars Battlefront II beta, there are three multiplayer game modes to try (not counting Arcade) they are: Galactic Assault, Starfighter Assault and Strike. Out of the three, the bread and butter mode is Galactic Assault; it’s a 40-player, multi-objective mode that showcases what the game has on offer (think of it as a smaller scale version of Battlefield 1’s Operations).  Expect vehicles, Heroes, and all the chaos that only DICE’s brand of multiplayer delivers.

In my time in the beta, Galactic Assault has been my favorite mode to play so far. Not only can you use each class to their fullest, but it also gives everyone a sense of purpose on what they need to do. Specialists need to mark enemies across the map, Heavy and Assault troops need to be on the frontlines and so on. Both sides seem to be on even ground so far, which is good. Attackers must guard the MTT while it slowly lumbers toward the main structure, while the defenders must damage it as much as they can before the final push in order to stop the attack, or to make sure the  “tickets” (number of respawns the enemy team has) is as low as it can be before the pure infantry chaos that follows.

Starfighter Assault is the announced space battles mode that has the Milennium Falcon and other noteworthy Star Wars crafts take the battle to the skies (space?). The spacecrafts are easier to control than Battlefield’s air vehicles, and the action is much more frenetic.

Strike is the smaller objective-based mode, that sees teams of eight go up against one another. The attacking side must nab the relic, and plant it somewhere in the map, while the defending side must stop them at all costs. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to see the attacking side win a match during my time so far. Nope, I’m not even exaggerating; I’ve literally never seen the attackers plant the bomb or whatever it is and win. There’s some obvious balance changes that needs to be made here that I’m hopeful DICE is aware based on their data.

The Dark Side

While the Battlefront II beta has been a fantastic experience so far, there are a few things that need to be changed. One of them is the squad system and how it works. I’ve already reached the level cap of 10 in the beta, but I still don’t know how to spawn in squads, how to choose where to spawn (or whom) and so on. Adding to the complication is the respawn timer resets the moment you step out of the menu showing it. So say you want to spawn in as an Officer and you see the timer ticking down, but you suddenly remembered that you can spawn in as a a Wookie; well, prepare to see that countdown go back to the start and count back down again. It’s a small thing, but when you’re rushing to aid your comrades, it becomes an annoyance that shouldn’t be there in the first place.

Another concern of mine is how Star Cards work. In Battlefront II, players earn a set amount of in-game money that can be used to buy loot crates. These crates include gun attachments, Heroe and soldier abilities, emotes, poses, and more. It’s like the entire progression system of Battlefront II is tied into it, which is a bit worrying given how everything is random. Sure, you can “scrap” whatever doubles you get, which will let you craft your own gun attachments and weapons, but the chance of it being abused is there for those willing to spend real-life cash.

It remains to be seen whether class abilities and progression are all tied into Star Cards or if there’s an actual benefit in leveling each class up aside from earning the ability to equip more Star Cards.

Finally, this might be a minor quibble for some, but I absolutely hated how there’s a constant electric “wave” effect on the screen. I first thought it might have been my TV, but checking online, it’s something DICE did to be stylish? I really don’t know, but it’s something that should be up to the player if they want it or not (give us the option to turn it off, DICE!).

More Star Wars Battlefront II Reading:

Level Up!

With DICE making a concerned effort to ensure players will earn and unlock stuff as they play in Battlefront II, the “depth” concern some players had with the first Battlefront should be gone — at least on face value. It remains to be seen whether there’s enough Star Cards, emotes, poses and more to have player grinding away for hours. It’s definitely a step in the right direction, and if DICE can add in more stuff post-launch, expect progression fans to keep on playing.

As for the visuals and audio work, it’s the same AAA production values one expects from a DICE-developed game. While the graphics seem to be on par (or in some cases inferior) to the first Battlefront, the audio work is excellent. Expect to hear the familiar sound of lasers, explosions and gunfire to blast on your TV’s speakers, headset or audio device.

The Force Awakens

So far so good, DICE seems to be on track to make Star Wars Battlefront II to surpass its predecessor handily. Add in the single-player campaign, and the Arcade mode, it should justify the asking price of $60 for most Star Wars and shooter fans. Let’s hope EA and DICE doesn’t go overboard on the Star Cards and loot crates, and fixes some of the issues that are plaguing the beta.

It’s clear that DICE has listened to fan complaints from the first game, but will the changes be enough for those who deemed the first one shallow? Will it offer enough incentive for people to keep on grinding away for Star Cards? Will that awful wavy effect be taken out at launch? There’s a ton of questions left

If DICE can iron things out, and have a compelling single-player campaign, and manage to iron out the technical kinks in multiplayer, then fans might be in for the awakening of the Force this November 17 when Star Wars Battlefront II ships for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Early access beta code provided by EA and played on PS4. Played for a few hours and reached the beta max cap of level 10.
