Overwatch Top 500 Console Player Reaches Top 500 of PC Using Only a Controller

While the (annoying debate) between console and PC fanboys will seemingly last on until forever, it’s usually accepted by everyone — including console players — that the superior input method for shooters is using a mouse and keyboard. Well, it seems, someone forgot the memo as a console “pleb” has somehow reached the top 500 players in Overwatch for PC!

Competitive gamer Triumph_Tensa announced his achievement over on Twitter and mentioned he’s “flex support.”

I think a hearty congrats are in order for reaching the top 500 player pool in both console and PC Overwatch

What does this mean exactly? Nothing much, except that people really do make a big deal about which platform they play on and such. As someone who games on both, there’s room for consoles and PC in the gaming space.

Will this prove that controller users can battle players using mouse and keyboard? Maybe? Probably not, but that’s a topic for another time.

WWE 2K18 Universe Mode Detailed, New Power Rankings Mechanic Explained

The WWE 2K18 Universe mode has been overhauled for this year. Universe is “a system that recreates the WWE broadcasting experience,” and in 2K18 new and improved features have been added.

Game designer Cristo Kyriazis has given comprehensive overview of what’s new to Universe:

Rivalries and Storylines

One of the most exciting parts of Universe is the rivalries that happen between Superstars. Rivalries occur between either two Superstars or two teams of Superstars, leading to a storyline that can play out over many months in the Universe calendar. Storylines feature cut scenes and put the rivals in scenarios that you won’t normally see through regular matchmaking. Players have a choice in creating their own rivalries or letting them happen on their own. We wanted to improve our systems for rivalries this year, and we’ve made some changes all around.

Potential Rivalries

New for this year, rivalries are separated into two types: Potential Rivalries and Active Rivalries. As the Superstars compete in their matches, perform promos or perform run-ins on each other, a Potential Rivalry will be established between them. Looking at the Rivalries menu, you can see a meter for each Potential rivalry and the state it’s in. This meter will build up as the interactions continue between the potential rivals during their matches. Once the meter is full, it’ll enter a “Standby” state and move into the next available Active Rivalry slot in the following show. Think of Potential Rivalries as the build-up to a full-fledged rivalry between Superstars.

These interactions take the forms of promos, cut scenes, and run-ins. The interactions that happen are mostly random, depending on various factors related to the Superstars. Things like rankings, relationships, a Superstar’s crowd reactions and their personalities are some of the things that can influence the chance of an interaction happening, as well as the type of interaction.

There are also some ways players can influence Personal Rivalries through their own actions. Think of doing something that would get under an opponent’s skin or infuriate him/her or something that would make you want to get even. For example, attacking your opponent with a chair is a definite way of maxing out a Potential Rivalry’s meter.

Active Rivalries

Active Rivalries are the results of all the build-up, making the rivalry official and starting off many weeks of heated competition between the rivals. Superstars will fight to build momentum and have the advantage leading up to their big matches at the next PPV. The payoff varies depending on which Superstars are in the rivalries, things like climbing the ranks or  title match opportunities. The types of rivalries you’ll see, whether it’s a friendly rivalry between allies or a hostile brawl-fest between heated enemies, depends on the rivalry’s “Intensity.”

Intensity

Intensity is a new addition this year, and it’s in both Potential and Active Rivalries. Intensity determines what’s likely to happen between the Superstars in a Rivalry and should help you identify from just a glance in the menus what kind of rivalry is taking place. Intensity has four different color-coded levels:

  • Low (Green): Sportsman-like conduct between the rivals; in short, a “friendly” rivalry;
  • Medium (Yellow): Rivals are disrespectful and confrontational or growing frustrated from being on the losing end;
  • High (Orange): Rivals are resorting to and responding with cheap shots and distractions against each other;
  • Very High (Red): The rivalry has become hostile, with Superstars attacking each other.

The Intensity of a rivalry will vary based on the interaction between the Superstars and is certainly likely to increase the longer the rivalry goes on. For example, a rivalry may start off at Medium Intensity after a call-out promo and then change to a High Intensity after one rival sucker-punches the other in the following week’s match. Players creating their own rivalries can choose the level of Intensity as well, increasing the possibilities further on what kinds of rivalries you can create.

Calendar and PPVs

One important thing we changed this year was how our story system handled calendars with inconsistent PPV dates. Our previous system wasn’t ready to properly handle WWE’s brand split and the multiple PPVs per month. For us, this meant overhauling our system for the most flexibility possible. This is more of a back end, behind the scenes change that we worked on, but the result is that rivalries and storylines will now work regardless of when they start and when the next PPV is happening.

I’m excited we can share these details with all of you, and I hope you enjoy the changes we’ve made. Our teams here at Visual Concepts, along with Yuke’s, has worked hard on these improvements and with re-working our story system, and I would love to hear everyone’s feedback.

New Systems and Improvements

Along with the changes to our storylines and rivalries, we’ve implemented new systems that add more depth to Universe in various areas.

Power Rankings

New to this year are Power Rankings, which will rank each Superstar in your Universe based on  success. While championships define the best Superstars of a show, Power Rankings are useful for finding out who’s the best Superstar in all of Universe. Winning high profile matches, earning championships and coming out ahead in rivalries will elevate Superstars up these Power Rankings.

Something we wanted to represent in Universe Mode is how some Superstars push past their limits and go on an unstoppable run, as well as how the underdogs can fight their way up to the very top to win and defend championship gold. Power Rankings will allow Superstars to achieve these kinds of runs by boosting them with temporary attribute bonuses if they can climb high enough in the Power Rankings. This allows low-powered Superstars to fight their way to championships and match up with the best of them or turn an already powerful Superstar into an unstoppable force.

Goals

One of the challenges we’ve faced with Universe is trying to articulate specific motivations for the Superstars. It’s easy to say everyone wants a championship, but there’s a lot more depth than that when you watch WWE’s broadcasting. As a result, we’ve implemented personal goals for Superstars that they can chase after as they compete in Universe.

Goals change for each Superstar based on various factors like their rankings and relationships. Champions want to defend their titles and the No. 1 contenders want to win those titles, close allies may want to form a tag team while a team on a losing streak may want to split up, and so on. Goals have an impact on the types of matches and rivalries that will get started for the Superstars. You’ll also have the ability to customize goals for Superstars so that you have some suggestive control over how Superstars can be booked.

Matches and Match Types

We’ve integrated some of the match type additions and improvements from Gameplay into Universe as well. You’ll see Eight-Man matches in Universe, such as Eight-Man Battle Royals and 4v4 Tag Team Matches. Just as with previous titles, you can customize the match cards of shows to suit your needs. This even includes the Custom Matches you create in the Creation Suite, bringing your own style of competition to Universe!

As you’re playing through matches, there’s a chance that one Superstar completely outclasses and overwhelms their opponents from the very start. Superstars with significantly higher attributes than their opponents can cause a squash match to occur, putting their opponents in a situation where they must mount a considerable offense to survive or suffer crushing defeat.

Which aspect of the WWE 2K18 Universe mode do you think sounds most exciting?

Raiden Now Available for Injustice 2 Season Pass Holders

After being unexpectedly available for the season pass owners on the Xbox One platform last week, Raiden the “Thunder God” from the Mortal Kombat franchise finally makes his highly anticipated debut in Injustice 2.

As now both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players can now ‘officially’ access the fury of Raiden if you happen to have purchased either the Ultimate God pack or Fighter Pack 2 for the DCU fighter, Injustice 2.

For those out of the loop, or happened to miss the latest WatchTower stream from NetherRealm Studios, the Chicago based development team responsible for both the Mortal Kombat and Injustice series. Here’s some of the thing that you need to know about Raiden’s fighting style for Injustice 2:

  • Compared to other fighters, Raiden has more of a ‘Yolo’ playstyle.
  • Very fast teleports that can be punished if you anticipate them
  • His character trait allows him to extend the hits for his attacks for more damage and also to break the armor for those who are trying to meter-burn f/b 3 any gaps from your combos.
  • His “superman” move can easily drag an opponent across the map if it connects.
  • Character trait can also give him the classic ‘meaty’ Mortal Kombat style uppercuts.
  • Some of his unlockable abilities include lighting traps, air teleport and more.

If that’s not enough to wet your appetite before you get your hands on Raiden, feel free to check out the videos below that focuses on his extra abilities and general gameplay that includes footage of Black Lightning:

Unlockable abilities

General Black Lighting gameplay

Aside from giving a glimpse to Raiden’s playstyle, the NetherRealm developers also hinted that we will see some Multiverses in the near future that awards skins based off a character’s movie/tv counterpart.

Injustice 2 is currently available on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms.

New PS4 Pro With “Updated Internals” Revealed

The model number of PS4 Pros being sold in Japan has changed. What was previously “CUH-7000” is now “CUH-7100”.

4Gamer discovered the change and contacted Sony for more information. Sony said that PS4 Pros with the new model number have updated “internal components.”

Despite the update, Sony went on to confirm that the new PS4 Pro won’t have any additional features, nor any different specs.

The change is likely due to the discovery of a more cost-effective production method, with more expensive components being swapped out for similar performing, yet cheaper, options.

Basically, don’t worry if you have the older model, as the new version won’t perform any better.

In other PlayStation hardware news, the PSVR headset is getting a refresh. The new version will incorporate headphones into the headset itself, and comes with a new updated processor which allows HDR pass through.

Maybe the PS Vita could get a little love…? Yeah, I guess that won’t be happening any time soon!

Sony has also outlined a few other features that might not be visible from the get-go. Check out how you can sort “team tournaments” and follow anyone with the new PS4 firmware update.

Team Tournaments

Prepare to recruit the best players you know, because Team Tournaments on PS4 are almost here. With this new functionality, you’ll be able to compete against other teams for prizes and status.

You can join or own up to a maximum of 60 different teams, and each team will have an owner and captain(s) who can manage the team. Only teams will be able to register for official Team Tournaments. Your team will have its own customizable team page where you can see team member information, and view upcoming and ongoing events that your team is currently registered for and competing in. In addition, you can easily check out your team’s results in past tournaments with a new bracket viewer that shows full tournament standings for Single and Double Elimination tournaments directly on PS4. Communicating and coordinating with your teammates is also simple via the integrated team chat feature.

Team Tournament functionality will come shortly after the release of 5.00.

Follow Anyone

Before 5.00, you were only able to follow Verified Accounts, but now you can follow any user without having to be friends with them (subject to privacy settings). This allows you to follow content creators, game broadcasters, and other gamers in a community without having to dip into your friends list. And at the same time, this will allow these users to expand their reach and build more interest in what they’re doing. Your What’s New feed will be updated with the activities of the users you’re following, so you can easily keep up on what they’re up to.  And under Friends, you’ll see a new Who to Follow section that will give you customized recommendations of who you can follow. The recommendations will be displayed in separate categories, such as Featured Verified Accounts, trending users, and suggestions based on games you’ve recently played.

Messages Update

We have one more feature to add to the list of updates coming to Messages on PS4. If you send a message that contains a link to a website, messages will now display a preview of the website, like headlines and thumbnails.

Those away on their PS4s can download the file right here.

In addition to the big PS4 update, some of the PlayStation apps are getting a refresh too! Here’s what’s new according to the messaging and communities apps straight from Sony.

App Updates

Not only that, but some of our apps are getting updates today too:

  • PlayStation Communities
Following this update, you can switch the app into landscape mode when you flip your phone sideways, so you get a wider view of the app and it makes it easier to scroll through. In addition, you’re now able to view and post animated GIFs on community walls. We’re also adding the following languages to the app: Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Romanian, Thai and Vietnamese.
  • PlayStation Messages
Stickers for Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and Horizon Zero Dawn are being added. And similar to the PS4’s Messages update, the PlayStation Messages app will also be updated to display previews of a website if you’vre sent received a link. And along with PS Communities,Support for Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Romanian, Thai and Vietnamese are being added to the app.

Let us know if you find any new features not listed in the patch notes by Sony. Get downloading, everyone!

Tekken 7 Tournament Produces Rare Double KO

In some must-see-it-to-believe-it news to spruce up your day, one of the rarest things in a fighting game has happened very recently and it was caught on stream.

What is it you may ask? Well, during the weekend a very rare Tekken 7 double KO occurred during  The Fall Classic 2017 stream for Tekken 7 top 16’s stream, which saw Joey Fury (Jack) make an intense comeback on BrawlPro (King) after being down 0-2 in the match and end the first game of the set with a nail biter of a double KO to unfortunately send the game into a draw.

Despite the game ending in a tie, this rare occurrence did rile up the crowd and gave them some hype that they can take with them before the start of the top eight for Tekken 7. Feel free to check out the intense set between Joey Fury and BrawlPro as well as the double KO in  the video provided above.

If you enjoyed that clip feel free to check out one my personal favorite “hype” moments in the Fighting Game Community where Woshige takes off a round on OgaWazato and celebrates a bit too early. What happens next is pretty hilarious.

Tekken 7 is currently available on the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms.
