Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Specialist Spotlight – Prophet & Battery

The Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Multiplayer Beta is right around the corner and Treyarch is shining a spotlight on more of the eight Specialist characters that will be playable throughout the week of testing.

Yesterday, the studio profiled Ruin and Outrider. Today’s briefing is on Prophet and Battery. Having served under the British Engineering Corps., Prophet’s cutting-edge Tempest weapon shocks targets, chaining electricity from one foe to the next while his unmatched hacking abilities allow him to flash back to a previous position. Battery is a soldier of the US Army with experience in the Airborne School, as a Ranger, and as a part of the Selection Program. She can launch a flurry grenades at her enemy with her War Machine while her Kinetic Armor will deflect incoming small arms fire from the neck down.

You can see how both operate in the video below. If you missed it, there are also video tutorials on Black Ops 3’s new movement mechanics and new Specialists system.

The Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Multiplayer Beta runs from August 19-23 on PlayStation 4 and August 26-30 on Xbox One and PC. You can get more details on code redemption and download size in our earlier story here.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Specialists Video Overview – Eight Available In The Multiplayer Beta

Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 bootcamp continues with another tutorial video to prepare you for the upcoming Multiplayer Beta later this month. This time, the studio overviews Black Ops 3’s multiplayer characters known as Specialists.

Specialists, if you haven’t heard, each have their own unique backstory, appearance, special weapon, and special ability. Players must select one at the beginning of every match and stick with him or her (or it, if it happens to be a cyborg killing machine) throughout. You must then select whether you’ll bring a special weapon or special ability into battle, which can be activated by pressing the L1 and R1 buttons (on a DualShock 4 controller) at the same time, once enough meter is built up. You can learn more about the eight Specialists that will appear in the Black Ops 3 Beta right here.

There are other tutorials as well — one for Black Ops 3’s new combat movement mechanics and one for the three maps that will be available in the Beta. You can watch both right here. Furthermore, this Beta FAQ will provide a few more details on redemption codes and download size, if you’re interested.

Here’s a look at Black Ops 3’s Specialists.

Star Wars Battlefront’s Supremacy Mode Will Be The Game’s “Largest,” Says DICE

Supremacy, a new game mode in DICE’s upcoming shooter, Star Wars Battlefront, will be the game’s “largest,” filled with “all-out clashes on huge maps with ground troops, vehicles, Heroes and Villains joining the fight,” and more.

This is according to the game’s Lead Level Designer Dennis Brännvall who revealed the mode earlier today in a new blog post from EA.

According to the studio, Supremacy will present five control points scattered across the map that players must capture — either all five or, at least, the majority of them before the 10-minute time limit is up. Teams start with two of these control points in their possession and will then fight for control over others in a set order, which means there’ll usually be two hot-spots on the map at a time.

On Twitter, Brännvall clarified that “each time a control point is claimed, time is added. A close Supremacy match can go on forever.”

It’s the game’s biggest mode, so vehicles will play a role in addition Heroes and Villains. The mode will also drop you into the game’s largest maps, which the studio says are comparable to some of the battlegrounds in Battlefield’s iconic Conquest mode.

“Supremacy is a game mode that will excite fans of the Conquest mode from Battlefield. That said, we’ve made several tweaks to improve the formula,” Brännvall explained. “You will always spawn close to the action when you enter Supremacy, so you’ll never feel isolated from the fight. By focusing on one key point at a time, players not playing the objective and camping on a hill somewhere will be a rare sight.

“When you spawn into Supremacy, you don’t have to move far to see a lot of friends – and enemies. You’re thrown into a massive frontline, where your screen is filled with adversaries: infantry, Heroes, Walkers, and starfighters. You can prepare for very heavy and focused Star Wars action.

“Using a character like Darth Vader to secure control points is great, as he can take increased damage before going down. Luke Skywalker and Boba Fett are great for moving swiftly between attacking and defensive positions, and giving you the edge against opponents in battle.”

Left out of the blog post was info on the game mode’s player count and when fans will get to see it in action, so hang tight for those details.

As for Brännvall’s personal favorite thing to experience in the new mode, he’s all about Supremacy on Endor. “With all the battles on ground and among the trees, the fights are always intense and fun,” he said. “An Ewok village is the central point, and there are many different ways of getting into those huts. That kind of verticality is really interesting.”

Earlier, DICE and EA also lifted the curtain on two additional Star Wars Battlefront game modes, Blast and Fighter Squadron. Click the links to find out more.

Star Wars Battlefront launches in a Galaxy far, far away (on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC) on November 17.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Multiplayer Beta FAQ Reveals File Size & Download Times

In preparation for the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Multiplayer Beta later this month, Activision recently put together an all-encompassing FAQ page with new details.

A lot of it is your standard stuff — things you probably already knew about. But it also gets into specifics on the Beta’s download size and provides an ETA on when anxious fans can start downloading it. You can read the entire thing right here, but we posted a few of the questions and answers we thought you might be interested below. As for the actual contents of the beta, be sure to check out our earlier story right here where you’ll find the full list of maps, modes, and Specialist characters.

On to a few FAQs.

What’s the difference between my Beta code that I received and my Beta token?

“Your pre-order Beta code reserved your spot for the Beta and is redeemed at CallofDuty.com/BlackOps3Beta. Once you have registered, a Beta token will be emailed to you on a rolling basis beginning at 12:00 AM PST on August 19th for PS4 users and on a rolling basis at 12:00 AM PST on August 26th for Xbox One and PC users. This Beta token will allow you to download the Beta from the platform you have designated in the registration process.”

How big is the Beta file?

“To make the Beta a fun and valuable experience, we’ve packed it with a lot of content. Therefore, the file is approximately 15 GB and download times will vary based on location, server traffic, and connection speed.”

How can I give feedback and report bugs to make Black Ops 3 better?

“We’re glad you asked! We will be posting a survey link on callofduty.com once the Beta starts. We welcome feedback and encourage everyone to share. The more feedback, the better.”

When will the servers be down for maintenance?

“Because this is a Beta, periodic maintenance will be necessary throughout the gameplay period. Please follow @Treyarch on Twitter for updates.”

Will my progress from the Beta carry over to retail?

“No, progress will not carry over from the Beta. Our focus is making the final game the best and most stable experience it can be and we will be working on balancing and other fixes leading up to launch.”

What about Campaign or Zombies, will that be available in the Beta also?

“No, the Black Ops 3 Beta is specifically focused on multiplayer.”

Specialists

Callsign: Ruin

  • Real Name: Donnie Walsh
  • Bio: Raised in a military family in a tough neighborhood, he is fearless and headstrong, an infantry soldier through and through. He uses his unique abilities to rush into battle and surprise the enemy with sheer force.
  • Weapon: Gravity Spikes – Creates a devastating area of effect shockwave in the surrounding area.
  • Ability: Overdrive – Initiates a burst of speed that accelerates all movement for a short period of time.

Callsign: Outrider

  • Real Name: Alessandra Castillo
  • Bio: Developed keen observation skills growing up in the streets of the Favela, traversing the rooftops to watch the action of the city below, and this earned her a place in the ranks of the Brazilian Special Forces. She outsmarts enemies by finding them before they have a chance to know what hit them.
  • Weapon: Sparrow – Compound bow w/explosive bolts and variable range.
  • Ability: Vision Pulse – Pulses the surrounding area to reveal the location of all enemies within range.

Callsign: Prophet

  • Real Name: David Wilkes
  • Bio:  Wilkes got his first set of cybernetic augmentations while serving in the British Engineering Corps. Five years and many upgrades later, he is the embodiment of the cutting edge of human weaponry on the battlefield, using his superior technology to disrupt opponents’ tactics before moving in for the kill.
  • Weapon: Tempest – Charge-shot weapon that fires an arc of electricity, shocking targets and chaining to all nearby enemies.
  • Ability: Glitch – Flash back to a previous position with this system mod that hacks the battlefield simulation grid.

Callsign: Battery

  • Real Name: Erin Baker
  • Bio: The only daughter and youngest child of five siblings, Erin Baker always had to fight to get her way. Following in a family tradition of over 100 years of military service, and watching her brothers enter the US Army one-by-one, she finally graduated high school and enrolled herself. Driven to excel by her ongoing rivalry with her brothers, she volunteered for Airborne School, before crushing the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program. Heavily armored, she fearlessly operates ahead of the front lines, nimbly traversing urban environments, as she destroys HVTs with salvoes of advanced high-explosive munitions.
  • Weapon: War Machine – Grenade launcher that fires bouncing grenades which detonate after a shot time or by hitting an enemy directly
  • Ability:  Kinetic Armor – Reactive armor that deflects enemy bullets away from the body. Still vulnerable to headshots and non-bullet damage while active.

Callsign: Seraph (available at level 22)

  • Real Name: Zhen Zhen
  • Bio:  Militant enforcer of the 54I crime syndicate’s rule of law. She is known for her focused and unflinching combat discipline, striking fear within the ranks of the cartel.
  • Weapon: Annihilator – Massive high-caliber revolver that fires devastating rounds with increased bullet penetration.
  • Ability: Combat Focus – Triggers a bonus multiplier to score earned towards Scorestreaks for a period of time.

Callsign: Nomad (available at level 28)

  • Real Name: Tavo Rojas
  • Bio: Last surviving member of an elite Rapid Deployment Force unit specialized in Jungle Warfare, Rojas has gone off-grid using his survivalist training to stay alive. At home in the wild, he uses his skills to turn the environment against his foes.
  • Weapon: H.I.V.E. – Deploys pod traps which release a deadly swarm of nano drones when triggered.
  • Ability: Rejack – Recover from near death by injecting a nanoparticle serum into the bloodstream.

Callsign: Reaper (available later in the week)

  • Real Name: Experimental War Robot (EWR)
  • Bio: Started as an expensive military R&D project to supplement Special Operations soldiers in the field, the EWR was a cutting-edge prototype combat robot, the most advanced in the world at the time. Budget overruns and embarrassing political incidents left the project all but a resource for scrap metal, except for the one prototype that remained.
  • Weapon: Scythe – Robotic arm that transforms into a high power Mini-Gun.
  • Ability: Psychosis – Infiltrate enemy DNI systems to simulate three decoy clones.

Callsign: Spectre (available later in the week)

  • Real Name: CLASSIFIED
  • Bio: Next to nothing is known about the presumed wet-works Specialist, Spectre. The designation itself is a codename agreed upon by the various agencies that have pooled their intelligence on unsolved assassinations, inferring his or her existence based on either evidence found at the scene or from fragmentary reports given by shaken bystanders.  Despite heavy redaction, all accounts suggest an individual capable of extraordinary stealth, able to evade or neutralize the most sophisticated of manned or automated security set-ups.  In every case, Spectre’s victims have been ‘handled’ with surgically precise mid-line wounds with rarely any signs of struggle.
  • Weapon: Ripper – Spectre deploys mono-edged twin blades before gracefully dissecting victims with lethal, surgical precision.
  • Ability: Active Camo: Advanced meta-materials rapidly change their properties, guiding photons over their surfaces instead of reflecting them, rendering Spectre temporarily invisible.

Here’s How Battlefield 4’s Night Operations Update Will Change The Way You Play

Battlefield 4’s Night Operations update drops next month, finally giving many Battlefield fans what they’ve been asking for: a proper after-dark combat experience in DICE LA’s military shooter.

The new update features a completely revamped Zavod 311 map, now called Zavod: Graveyard Shift. Covered in darkness, it should provide ample opportunity for new gameplay opportunities, some of which DICE LA have listed in a recent blog post. Here are a couple ideas:

Destructible lights

“At night, the map is littered with destructible lights, which you can use to your advantage. Want to make sure you gain the upper hand using night vision scopes? Take all lights out in an area and prey on your enemies!”

Ground Level fog

“At night, the exterior areas are blanketed in a thick fog – this fog makes it very hard to spot players on the ground from above – unless you sport a night vision scope…”

Vehicle lights

“All vehicles have lights, which makes anyone inside an easy target – don’t use vehicles if you want to stay hidden!”

Flanking routes

“With darkness descending on the map, using flanking routes on the side of the map is a very viable tactic to get around the center area and take a backside objective from the enemy.”

Use new Gun Master to your advantage

“We’ve added a new Gun Master weapon preset with night vision and utility in mind – use to practice night time play if you haven’t unlocked all the needed gadgets yet. It really shines when played on the alternate Gun Master layout on Zavod: Graveyard Shift!”

20150811_BF4_Nightops2_gunmaster_org

Under the cover of darkness, players will find the need to be more careful about how they move and how visible they are to the enemy. Here are a few things to take note of:

Sprinting

“Gets you quickly from point A to B, but makes footstep sounds which makes you easy to pinpoint and prey on.”

Vehicle usage

“Being in a vehicle normally means relative safety, but headlights and engine sounds put a rather large target on your back.”

Flashlight, laser, and other weapon attachments

“While great help in an engagement, they draw attention to your position and exact location.”

20150811_BF4_Nightops2_atv_org

Lastly, here are a few attachment and equipment combinations to consider when operating under darkness:

Smoke + Nightvision scopes

“An oldie but goodie, chuck a smoke grenade into an area and using your night vision scope to pick off unsuspecting enemies. This works best in narrow passages, like the underground tunnel between C & D for instance.”

Flare + LMG

“Used as a Smoke + Nightvision counter, Flares negate the positive aspects of night vision scopes, and you’ll be able to blanket the area with bullets as it’s engulfed in smoke.”

Flashbangs + Shotgun/PDW

“A tactic viable in both and nighttime play. Using a flashbang against a night scope user gives you a significant advantage in the dark, even more so than using a flashbang under normal conditions. Clean it up with a well-placed shotgun blast and you’re deadlier than ever.”

Dirty, dirty claymores & mines

“Claymores are very effective at nighttime, especially if you are being hunted. Remember to use sounds to your advantage, or why not your flashlight? AT Mines are also very effective in negating that pesky tank, but they do have a new little red blinky light attached to them, so you’re not all out of luck if you’re controlling a vehicle if you keep your eyes peeled!”

Look for Battlefield 4’s Night Operations update some time in September.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s Official Beta Trailer Is Here, New Specialists Revealed

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3‘s official multiplayer Beta kicks off next week, giving fans the chance to test out over 7 multiplayer modes, over 3 multiplayer maps, and up to eight different Specialists, which are unique multiplayer characters with different weapons and abilities.

This is according to the brand new Beta trailer that Treyarch and Activision released earlier today, which you can check out above. In addition to the ability to unlock weapons, perks, equipment, and scorestreaks, players will also be able to customize their weapons in detail inside Black Ops 3’s Paint Shop feature.

The Black Ops 3 Beta arrives first on PlayStation 4 from August 19 to August 23, then on Xbox One and PC from August 26 to August 30. To guarantee participation, you’ll need to pre-order the game on one of those three platforms before the Beta’s start date.

In the trailer, two new Specialists may have caught your eye: Battery and Spectre. Here are a couple new images of the characters, courtesy of CI.

Battery

CMJS1XjUwAAmTew

Battery can call upon either the War Machine, a grenade launcher that fires time-fused bouncing frag grenades, or her Kinetic Armor, which vaporizes incoming bullets on impact.

Spectre

CMJS4s6UkAEwqvS

Spectre’s special weapon is the Ripper, a mono-edged twin blade that can easily slice through enemies, while his Active Camo ability can render him temporarily invisible.

According to Studio Design Director David Vonderhaar, more details on the new Specialists are incoming later today.

New Metal Gear Solid 5 Video Highlights 1v1 Player Invasion & Motherbase Defense

Just a little less than a month away from launch, Konami has released a new, very in-depth video profiling Motherbase, an offshore location that will serve as your main base of operations in between missions where you will help Big Boss build his private army in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

As you can see in the 30-minute footage above, there’s plenty to do if you want to maintain your resources, which can, in fact, be stolen by other users via the game’s player-invasion mechanic if your defenses aren’t up to snuff. This is where The Phantom Pain’s 1v1 PvP action comes into play, which the commentator says is completely optional, but can be rewarding.

Though Motherbase defense includes PvP gameplay, it is separate from Metal Gear Online’s team-based multiplayer, which we recently learned is being delayed to next year. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain launches on all platforms September 1.

Gamescom 2015 has been big for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 fans. Earlier this week, developer Treyarch dove into the innovative new eSports features shipping with the game later this year while putting its competitive Arena multiplayer on display. More recently, PC users got a list of cool features they can expect on launch, including 100% dedicated servers and 2-player split screen.

There are probably a ton of questions you still have about the game, which is why Studio Design Director David Vonderhaar recently took over the official Call of Duty Twitter account to provide a few answers. In a Q&A session, he touched on Black Ops 3’s Arena mode, emblems, time-to-kill, Prestige levels, controller layouts, and more. You can have a look at the full round-up of questions and answers below.

Q: Will all the attachments Be unlocked already in arena mode/League Play? – @ibra231081

A: Yes! Arena has all content available. You can also earn progress against anything unlocked in Public Match.

A: Bans/Protects and the Specialist Draft are in Arena and available to Custom Games with full control.

Q: Will there be 4 or 6 people on each team in multi-player? – @watervsfire619

A: Most playlists are 6 on 6, but we also have 4 on 4 and 9 on 9.

Q: Will I be able to switch specialists mid game like switching classes – @Solarbow

A: No, you can’t. We make you commit to this decision at the start of each game.

Q: Will there be emblem making and will it be as noticeable as in Black Ops 1 and 2. – @Stormstar8

A: Yes. Even more important and has new features like grouping and linking.

Q: How much is the time to kill? – @kapsisthrylos7

A: Fast. And we are still evaluating. Play the beta and give us feedback about it!

Q: Will all guns be available in the beta? – @willrichards774

A: Most weapons are. I just saw a near final list of what is in the beta, which means you will see it soon.

Q: Can we know about the prestiging system in black ops 3? – @xii_noble

A: Full details on Prestige have not been announced, but we have something totally new and different planned.

Q: Will there be different controller settings such as default flipped and southpaw in BO3? – @GoatsPwn

A: Yes. All the ones you would expect, and some new ones like Bumper Jumper.

Obviously, much more is to come in the following weeks leading up to Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s multiplayer beta on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC later this month. The game officially launches on all platforms November 6.

Battleborn To Release February 9, Four New Playable Characters Revealed

After its initial reveal during last year’s E3 conference, those interested in Gearbox Software’s latest IP, Battleborn, can finally start marking down the days until it hits store shelves.

Gearbox has revealed that Battleborn will be available to play on February 9th for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One platforms in their latest trailer, which you can view above. It should be noted that an open beta will also take place before the game officially launches.

In addition to Gearbox revealing a release date for Battleborn, four new playable characters have also been announced, which you check out below, including their bios:

CLrbTRFUsAAhcH-

Ambra

“Born into an ancient order of priestesses responsible for discovering a way to prolong life indefinitely, Ambra was betrayed by her leader and her faction, the Jennerit Empire, and now fights alongside the Battleborn. She is a specialist hero, dealing damage up close through her melee attacks and powerful abilities, while healing her allies in the process.”

Mellka

“A stealthy assassin, Mellka lost her parents at a young age before eventually earning her place among the Eldrid’s black op’s and intelligence bureau. Her life has been defined by a series of staggering losses, but her response to these losses was never despair – it was fury. She strikes quickly, disorienting foes with her nerve gas machine pistol and bio-glaive melee attacks.”

Reyna

“Known by her followers as “The Valkyrie,” Reyna was born aboard the Rogue faction’s ailing junk heap of a flagship and is a native to the last star system. Reyna has fought tirelessly for the freedom of her space pirate comrades, finding her calling as their inspirational leader. She dishes damage with her laser pistol and uses her command glove to support her teammates.”

Benedict

“August Benedict Jr. is one of several surviving races of bird-like “Aviant” refugees. He swore allegiance to the Peacekeepers where he’s gained considerable notoriety for being a self-centered jerk that’s capable of astounding destruction with his rocket launcher. Double jumping, rocket jumping, and flying – Benedict’s good at all of them and he lets his teammates know it.”
