Rumor: Call of Duty 2021 Setting to Be in World War 2

While Activison hasn’t said anything about this year’s Call of Duty other than confirming that it’ll be out later this year, and that it’s not expecting it to sell as well as Black Ops Cold War, a new rumor has surfaced stating that Call of Duty 2021 will be going back to World War 2.

Over on Twitter, reliable Call of Duty leaker Victor_Z teased an image of a hammer emoji coupled with an image of Call of Duty: WWII! The hammer seems to be an indication that Sledgehammer Games is once again helming a new Call of Duty game, and that it’ll continue with its World War 2 setting!

When asked if this meant World War 3, Victor_Z replied with “WW2.”

Mind, this is still a rumor until verified by Activision and/or Sledgehammer Games. Those who don’t play the franchise every year, Call of Duty: WWII was released back in 2017, and was developed by Sledgehammer Games. It went through an odd post-launch cycle wherein major components of its gameplay and class system were changed, following the departure of studio heads Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield to more “executive duties” in Activision, before leaving the company completely without much fanfare.

If Activison continues its Warzone marketing gimmick, expect this year’s Call of Duty reveal to happen with a lot of teases stemming from Warzone, like it was last year with Black Ops Cold War.

Ninja Gaiden: Master Edition Announced, Coming to Consoles and PC on June 10

Get ready to slice and dice with some classic Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo works that are finally getting bundled together, as the newest Nintendo Direct has revealed that the Ninja Gaiden series is coming to Nintendo Switch collectively as the Ninja Gaiden: Master Edition — which will be released for the hybrid console as well as PS4, Xbox One, and PC this June.

Here’s the new trailer showcasing the classic trilogy in action.

Ninja Gaiden: Master Edition Reveal Trailer

Originally released as an Xbox exclusive in 2004, Ninja Gaiden saw the return of master ninja Ryu Hayabusa for a new generation following his appearance in the original trilogy of Ninja Gaiden games for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Set in the same universe as the Dead or Alive fighting game series, the game was critically acclaimed — and saw a reworked version released called Ninja Gaiden Black in 2005, while Ninja Gaiden Sigma was an enhanced port that was released for the PS3 in 2007. A true sequel called Ninja Gaiden 2 was also released for the Xbox 360 in 2008, which would later get a heavily altered release for the PS3 in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. Ninja Gaiden 3 would simultaneously release for both PS3 and Xbox 360 in early 2012, with an updated release called Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge hitting the Wii U later that year.

The updated versions in Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge are the versions that will be ported to current gen consoles and PC.

We previously reported that a Ninja Gaiden Sigma Trilogy was coming to PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Looks like that’s officially confirmed now for both as well as Xbox One and PC.

Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection will be released for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on June 10.

Monster Hunter Rise New Story Trailer Released, Limited Edition Switch Console Announced

During Nintendo’s presentation today (or otherwise known as Nintendo Direct), a Monster Hunter Rise new story trailer was released, which gave us a glimpse at some of the characters that will be present in the game, as well as a peek at some of the monsters we’ll be hunting.

In addtition to that, there’s the Monster Hutner Rise Deluxe Edition system as well, which features a game-themed Switch (and dock!), and controller!

Straight from the press release:

As hunters investigate the source of the incoming Rampage, they will encounter the fearsome Rakna-Kadaki. The Rakna-Kadaki covers its body in thread, masking its appendages in a white shroud. This thread is also used to hinder hunters’ movements, rooting them in place before Rakna-Kadaki spews a combustible gas from its maw. While Rakna-Kadaki alone is a fierce predator, it is also known to carry its Rachnoid larvae in tow to support its movements and help capture its prey. Rakna-Kadaki and its brood make their home in the cracks and crags of the Lava Caverns’ once molten stone. The massive caves of the Lava Caverns were built over centuries by two competing forces:  the slow, scorching flow of lava, and a steady torrent of clear and cold water. Hunters must stay alert for Rakna-Kadaki, and any number of threats, while exploring this dangerous, yet picturesque, locale.

Spurred by the Rampage, the normally remote Almudron has descended from its mountain home to wreak havoc on the settlements near Kamura. This monster covers its body in mud to deflect incoming attacks, and flings the sticky slurry at any approaching hunters to bog down their movements. The golden liquid it secretes from its tail dissolves sand and stone alike, allowing Almudron to stop prey in their tracks by creating an instant pit of sinking sand. Almudron is an incredibly invasive threat to the barren wilderness of the Sandy Plains. There, the sun-scorched sands radiate an oppressive heat during the day, and at night, the area is beautifully illuminated by moonlight that offers no concealment from nocturnal predators.

Hunters will also have to contend with a number of returning monsters while braving the Lava Caverns and Sandy Plains, including the “Queen of the Land” Rathian, territorial Diablos, easily enraged Rajang, the “Rock Wyvern” Basarios, and rapidly rotating Volvidon.

In addition to a glimpse of the twin Quest Maidens Hinoa and Minoto lending a hand, fans received a first look at an Apex monster spurring the horde towards Kamura. More information on the incoming Rampage will be shared soon.

Monster Hunter Rise will stampede its way to Nintendo Switch this March 26, 2021!

Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 4 “Nature’s Power” Details Announced, Druid Revealed With New Trailer

During today’s Panel From Hell livestream, Larian Studios announced details regarding Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 4! Called “Nature’s Power,” this will be the biggest patch the game will get to date, and will introduce a new class, the Druid, into the RPG!

Check out the trailer below, as well as the huge info dump for both Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 4, and the Druid class!

Big Changes in BG3’s Patch 4

Along with Druids, Patch 4: Nature’s Power will bring a number of changes to the game, many of which have been requested by the community or influenced by community feedback, including (naturally) fixes, but also major overall improvements like:

  • Optional Loaded Dice: This optional change will help smooth out the extremes of the bell curve. It retains the core elements of RNG, ensuring a player can no longer be unlucky or super lucky with several dice rolls in a row. The system also runs in two parts: dice rolls in dialogue are different to those in combat, and this change only impacts the d20, not damage rolls.
  • Improved Cinematics: Narrative cinematics will be given a new lease on life thanks to major improvements in lighting and animation, resulting in some truly spectacular story sequences.
  • Speak With Dead Cinematic Functionality: Cinematics in special cases like Speak with Dead will get huge improvements, along with the ability to join conversations as an animal. The patch will also add improved animations with the Druids in the Grove as they cast spells and use their abilities.
  • Multiplayer: Those embarking on their adventure together with friends will be able to see other players’ equipment, spells, inventory and character sheets (as well as the ability to take and place items to and from). There is no lock function — that will come in a future patch. As a result, your friends could, for example, steal your items. But don’t worry. They’re your friends. They wouldn’t do that to you, would they?
  • Quality of Life: A series of much-requested features will be implemented. Players will be able to target friends and enemies with spells and equipment by clicking on their portraits. As an alternative to clicking on a character in the world, players will also be able to easily select and attack whoever they want from the UI. We’ll also be adding a flee button for the errr… tacticians among us. And using torches will be easier thanks to the long-awaited addition of the torch button!

The Druids

The Druid class comes with over 30 spells and abilities, including Wild Shape. New dialogue and voice-over have also been recorded so that playing a Druid delivers the same deeply narrative experience as the other classes (Humans, Elves, Half-Elves, Halflings, Dwarves, Tieflings, Drow, etc.). We won’t spoil them, but those who visit Druid’s Grove as a Druid may enjoy a game of spot-the-difference. And of course, as a game that reacts to who you are, there will be new rewards, options, story moments, and interactions scattered throughout Act 1.

With the power of the wilderness at their fingertips, Druids can transform their shape to adapt to different situations. Crunch bones and slam into enemies as a Dire Wolf or Polar Bear. Spin your silken thread over the environment as a Spider. Soar above Faerun as a Raven. Sneak into hostile spaces unnoticed as a Cat. Burrow under the earth and ambush opponents as a Badger. Or temporarily embrace the tadpole that the Mindflayers have implanted inside you, discovering a new, mysterious Aberrant Shape.

There will be eight Shapes available: Deep Rothé, Cat, Raven, Dire Wolf, Badger, Spider, Polar Bear, and Aberrant. NPCs will react to your animal form in procedural ways. Bear blocking your path? Assume Bear Shape and speak his own language!

D&D fans will know that Druids traditionally come from one of a number of Circles. Druids will be able to choose from one of two Circles to inform how they play:

  • Circle of the Land: Keepers of the Old Faith, these Druids are connected to arctic wastelands, sunny coasts, scorching deserts, fair forests, green grasslands, tall mountains, treacherous swamps and even the vast, otherworldly realm of the Underdark. Based on what type of geography they’re connected to, they gain additional power.
  • Circle of the Moon: Changeable as the moon, these stewards of nature haunt the deepest parts of the wilderness. Transformation is no problem for most Druids, but those who keep the ways of the moon gain the ability to morph into more powerful combative Wild Shapes like the Polar Bear.

For further information on Druids in D&D, be sure to check out the VOD version of the Panel From Hell 2, where Lead Systems Designer Nick Pechenin and D&D Principal Rules Designer Jeremy Crawford explored the ways in which Larian has incorporated the versatile character class into the game. With the aforementioned Wild Shape ability taking center stage, the panel talked through many more spells, abilities and character interactions that the Druid has enabled.

Sadly, there’s no release date set for Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 4 just yet. Once we know when, we’ll make sure to let our readers know.

Xbox Series X|S “FPS Boost” for Backward Compatible Games Announced

Those looking to play more of their back catalog from Xbox One to the Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft annouced the “FPS Boost” feature that boosts the frame rate of certain games.

Xbox Senior Program Manager Paul Eng posted a detailed look into this feature over on the Xbox Wire website. Eng mentions that there is no added work for devs for this new feature, and in some instances, they can even quadruple the original frame rate!

As we detailed in October, with the increased CPU, GPU and memory from our new consoles, all of your existing games look and play better. With certain titles, we can make the experience even better, all with no work required by the developer, and no update needed by the gamer. To that end, the backward compatibility team has developed FPS Boost, which employs a variety of new methods for nearly doubling (and in a few instances, quadrupling) the original framerate on select titles. Higher, steadier framerates make games visually smoother, resulting in more immersive gameplay. We partnered closely with developers to enhance the experience while maintaining the game’s original intent. And while not applicable to all games, these new techniques can push game engines to render more quickly for a buttery smooth experience beyond what the original game might have delivered due to the capabilities of the hardware at the time.

The first games to support this FPS Boost feature has been announced and they are:

  • Far Cry 4
  • New Super Lucky’ Tale
  • Sniper Elite 4
  • UFC 4
  • Watch Dogs 2

According to Eng, these titles were chosen to highlight the several different ways that FPS Boost can improve the experience for gamers. An example given was how New Super Lucky’s Tale can now run up to 120 frames per second (fps), and UFC 4 can deliver an improved frame rate performance and  can now run at 60fps.

More titles featuring FPS Boost will be announced soon, as new menu icons, and system settings will be delivered in an upcoming system update this spring.

Marvel’s Avengers PS5 & Xbox Series Enhancements Detailed, No Mention of Ray Tracing That Was Stated Last Year

Marvel’s Avengers PS5 & Xbox Series enhancements have officially been detailed by Crystal Dynamics, with the next-gen versions coming this March 18.

While the team only showed a brief trailer and shared some light details on the Marvel’s Avengers enhancements for the PS5 version (due to marketing agreement,) a newsletter from the official PlayAvengers website that we received features a full breakdown of the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S enhancements that players can expect come next month.

Marvel’s Avengers PS5 & Xbox Series Enhancements

Marvel's Avengers PS5 EnhancementsXbox Series Enhancements

What makes this a bit interesting is that there is no mention of any real-time ray-tracing that the developers had originally confirmed last year. No mention of different lighting either (just improved,) and as for reflections it will opt to use stochastic screen-space reflections (SSR). For those who don’t understand the difference between SSR and ray-traced reflection, SSR technique renders only what’s viewable within the player’s screen, versus ray-tracing reflection being able to render objects even off screen from any angle. Basically if you look at a reflection of say a mirror with an object in view of the player, it’ll reflect, but as soon as you move out of view of the object (moving camera) it will begin to disappear. Here’s a video demonstrating the two.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCXVG0Qw7Fo

I’ll say personally it’s not that big of a deal for Marvel’s Avengers, especially when considering the current performance on last-gen consoles. The added load from real-time ray tracing reflection has proven to be quite demanding in many titles before Avengers, so the lack of the feature is probably for the best all things considering. Plus, this isn’t to say that SSR can’t be impressive in it’s own way, it’ll really just depend on how Crystal Dynamic utilizes it.

Of course this could be a printing mistake, so to be sure we went ahead and reached out to Square Enix and Crystal Dynamic for any possible comment. We’ll be sure to update if we hear anything back.

No Man’s Sky Update 3.20 February 17 (PS5 3.020) Flies Out (Update)

Hello Games has released the latest title update for No Man’s Sky today! The No Man’s Sky update 3.20 February 17 is now live on all platforms (including next-gen). For PS5 gamers, this will show up as the version 3.020 patch. Head on below for more details.

The patch file size on PS4 is reported to be 12GB, while it’s only at 2.9GB on PS5. On Xbox One, it’s at 6GB.

UPDATE: Hello Games has released the official changelog for what it calls the “Companions Update.”

No Man’s Sky Update 3.20 February 17 Patch Notes:

Here are the official details from Sean Murray and the description of what’s in this new major update:

A galaxy of new Companions

The infinite and varied creatures you find roaming the universe can now be tamed and adopted as your companions. Once bonded to you, your new friends can be summoned anywhere – even aboard the Space Anomaly.

Raise a new generation

Creatures that have been well-cared for will lay eggs! Incubate the egg in your Exosuit until it’s ready to hatch into a brand-new lifeform.

Explore together

Creatures can be trained to perform chores like scanning for resources, marking hazards, providing torchlight, hunting hostile creatures, locating buildings, digging up valuable treasures or even deploying their own shoulder-mounted mining lasers.

Play together

Use specific command gestures to issue orders to your co-explorer. When your companion meets other players, creatures or companions they might become inquisitive, playful – or even aggressive, depending on their personality.

Unique personalities

A creature’s personality is unique and shaped by their species and ecosystem role. Their personality influences how they behave as well as how they think and communicate.

Alien neuro-translation

The creature harness has a neural link with the Exosuit, enabling rudimentary translation of their thoughts and wishes. Finally, you can talk to the creatures you meet!

Form your bond

Nurture your companion by playing with them, feeding them, and giving them attention.

Companion customisation

Accessorise your companion with a range of functional and decorative adornments. Accessories can be recoloured and customised with decals.

Nurture the young

Baby creatures will inherit looks and traits from their parent – but they are never exactly the same! They will need your care as they grow from spawn to maturity…

Gene re-sequencing

Genetic material can also be taken to the new Egg Sequencer aboard the Space Anomaly. The Egg Sequencer allows players to remix the genetic material of their growing eggs to produce unique, never-before-seen creatures.

Genetic trading

Players who have found particularly rare or desirable creatures may wish to trade eggs from their prized companions with other players.

Performance optimisations

On top of all the new features, the Companions update will bring significant improvements to load and warp times for PlayStation 4 players.

Currently, Hello Games has not announced any official changelog for the game, which is a given since the studio posts it a few hours after the patch is out in the wild. Oddly enough, the Experimental Branch notes have not been updated as well, with the most recent change only as:

  • Fixed a visual issue when using the terrain manipulator.
