Outriders Demo Missing Legendary Weapons, Accolades and Restoration Outlined by People Can Fly

Earlier today, People Can Fly released a new patch for the Outriders demo that’s aimed at making sure legendary weapons don’t go missing since, y’know, since it takes ages to farm them. In addition to the patch, the studio has outlined what players can do for the Outriders demo legendary weapons that are missing, the accolades and more.

Outriders Demo Missing Legendary Weapons and Accolades Acknowledgement by People Can Fly:

We have further good news to share with you today.

We believe we have identified and now prevented the Inventory Wipe/Items Disappearing issue from occurring in the Outriders Demo.

We actually published the fix for this issue on Monday, but have been using the days since then to verify whether our resolution has been successful in order to not make any false promises. Today’s patch has added an extra safeguard against this issue occurring in future based on our findings.

To that end, we would please ask any players who have had their inventory wiped on any of the following days to please let us know on this comment or as a reply on this tweet:

  • Tuesday, March 16th
  • Wednesday, March 17th
  • Thursday, March 18th
  • Today or any day after today (Friday, March 19th)

We hope that no inventory wipes should have occurred during these days, but we want to ensure that this issue has been resolved, so please do let us know!

Can My Outriders Demo MIssing Legendary Weapons Be Restored/Brought Back?

Ah, now this is the major question on everyone’s minds. Well, there is some good news from today’s announcement, and that’s the confirmation that a restoration process is in the cards!

Restoration:

Now that we believe that the issue has been prevented going forward, we can focus a bit more on how we plan to compensate affected players.

We fully understand the disappointment of feeling like you have lost significant progress, items or time, and we would like to assure you that we are doing everything in our power to make things right.

While we are still working on the exact technicalities, below are our intentions for item restorations:

  • Restoration should take place on a specific day and should be a one-time event
    • The exact date is TBC but we’re hoping for this to occur prior to the launch of Outriders on April 1
    • We will update you when we have confirmation of date and timings
  • We will only be able to restore Legendary items that have been lost as a result of this bug
  • We will not be able to restore items of a rarity below Legendary
  • At this time you do not need to get in touch with us to report inventory disappearances that occurred prior to Monday March 15th.

Please note that these are our intentions that we are providing here for transparency. While we will try our hardest to make things right, we unfortunately cannot make guarantees for the specifics of the above or the timeline of this, as we may run into technical difficulties that delay our work.

Outriders Demo Missing Accolades

People Can Fly also touched o the missing Accolades players earned in the beta, and yes, there are plans to sort that out too.

Accolades

This appears to be a separate issue and we do still need to uncover the full extent of it in order to better tailor our resolution for it.

To that end, could anyone who has had their accolades wiped, please reply to this comment or this tweet.

Understanding the numbers of players affected by this will help us greatly as we continue to investigate this issue

Hopefully, these are all sorted out soon and without much hassle for players. For those who want to grind for legendary weapons in the demo, you can do so now with the knowledge that the bug won’t affect you thanks to today’s patch.

Make sure to direct feedback for the relevant topics to that Twitter thread or Reddit thread linked above.

Cyberpunk 2077 Upcoming Update Patch 1.2 Partial Notes Revealed

Looks like Night City is getting a long overdue update pretty soon, as the folks at CD Projekt Red have revealed the Cyberpunk 2077’s upcoming update patch 1.2 partial patch notes — and they are pretty detailed ones to boot with some accompanying videos describing what’s coming.

Dubbed as the special report segement of N54 News in the game’s Night City setting, the Cyberpunk 2077 patch 1.2 updates are detailed below via the game’s official website.

Welcome to this special report of N54 News, bringing news from Night City to every Night Citizen stranded away from home! Stay with us if you’d like to learn more about some of the upcoming changes. I’m Gillean Jordan, and here’s what’s new in Night City:

NCPD Quick Response Team too quick?

You heard right! The NCPD Quick Response Team is under fire from concerned Night Citizens and corporations alike. The rapid deployment tactics they recently adopted forced mercenaries to think twice before pointing a gun at anyone, but will now be adjusted to give the other side some breathing room.

Vehicular manslaughter statistics higher than ever

Look left, then right, then left again — and then run for your life. As morgues are filling up with roadkill, it is now statistically safer to stroll through Kabuki Market with shiny new cyberware than to cross some of Night City’s intersections. The City Council approved a bill forcing vehicle manufacturers to update their steering firmware.

Soon, the mandatory update will allow for better synchronization between the CrystalDome system and the vehicle, resulting in a more fluid driving experience even when the image signal skips a frame or two.

In addition, drivers should also expect to be able to better personalize their driving experience by adjusting the sensitivity limits to a level they are comfortable with — providing a much needed breather for insurance companies.

Rock&Roll for racers

No, it’s not a new genre of music! The brand new Rock&Roll vehicle subsystem will allow any unfortunate street racer who missed a turn and ended up stuck on a pile of garbage to quickly get back on track. The system will allow drivers to rotate or rock their vehicles back and forth in order to regain traction.

Gone are the days of abandoning a vehicle in the middle of the city just because things got out of control. Accidents happen and being in a rush isn’t a crime! Now, if somebody appears out of nowhere when you’re crossing a red light, you will still be able to make it to your meeting on time and let your insurance take care of the mess.

Update your neuroprocessor drivers or die

This is not a joke! It’s raining men in Night City and not for the reasons you’d expect. Just over the last month authorities recorded nearly 4000 fatal accidents caused by a neuroprocessor glitch causing users to dodge without intending to. The manufacturer has prepared an update to address the issue.

According to our survey over 30% of all Night Citizens experienced an irresistible urge to burst forward for no reason and the majority of affected people admitted that it put them in danger of falling from a high place. Manufacturer claims that the glitch is caused by a lack of perfect synchronisation between the user’s brain patterns and the neuroprocessor.

The update will allow users to better personalize their chips and match software responses with their neural patterns. Aside from resolving the issue with sudden dodging, it will also mean that people will find it easier to move and use the chip, regardless of their handedness, abilities or personal preferences.

Originally scheduled for release earlier this year, CD Projekt Red had to temporarily shelve work on patch 1.2 due to the cyber attacks that happened a few weeks ago.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, with a PS5 and Xbox Series X|S version scheduled for release some time this year.

Marvel’s Avengers Update 1.28 March 19 (1.000.005) Released

While we just got the big Future Imperfect and next-gen update for Marvel’s Avengers yesterday, Crystal Dynamics has pushed out the Marvel’s Avengers update 1.28 March 19 patch (PS5 1.000.005 version) today for PC and PlayStation platforms. This is to fix crashing issues and save migration problems the has been suffering through since yesterday.  Head on below for the patch notes, true believers!

Marvel’s Avengers Update 1.28 March 19 (PS5 1.000.005) Patch Notes:

Here’s what Crystal Dynamics has shared just now:

We are aware of a small number of users (across all platforms) running into a persistent crash playing the latest version of the game. We suggest using the back-up save feature to work around this. You can find instructions here: https://support.square-enix-games.com/s/article/000001194?language=en_GB&game=avengers

If you’re encountering this issue on PS5 and have just migrated your save, you will not yet have a back-up save on PS5. However, you can work around this by restoring your back-up save on PS4, and then migrating your save to the PS5 again. This should resolve the issue on PS5.

If neither of those work, we are working on a hotfix patch to address this issue. Your save data will not be lost!

We can confirm that this patch is out now on PS4 and PS5.

Hopefully, this fixes any problems for gamers. Hey, even Avengers need help sometimes! Don’t forget to check the roadmap and Black Panther reveal right here.

Rainbow Six Parasite Tech Test Starts This Weekend, Invites Being Sent Out

While Ubisoft has yet to announce just what exactly is Rainbow Six Quarantine’s new name will be (codenamed as Parasite for now), we do know one thing: the game is set to be tested by gamers worldwide! The Rainbow Six Paraiste tech test invites and whatnot are being sent out.

Check out the images below sent to us by a tipster:

It looks like this current Rainbow Six Parasite tech test is just for one day, as the schedule runs from morning tomorrow up to midnight and that’s it. For those looking for leaked footage, that most likely won’t happen, as the testers have signed an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) that prevents them from sharing impressions, images and footage from the tech test.

Of course, this isn’t really a surprise as we’ve seen the tech test client on Xbox platforms last week. While it’s currently called Rainbow Six Parasite, Ubisoft has confirmed that this is just a codename, and the final name will be revealed at some point.

If you want to send us a tip, hit that red button on the side on mobile (Submit a Tip!), or send us an email at tips @ mp1st.com

Studio Wildcard has rolled out another patch for Ark Survival Evolved this month! The Ark Survival Evolved update 2.52 March 19 patch is live today! Head on below for more details, dino hunters.

Ark Survival Evolved Update 2.52 March 19 Patch Notes for Today:

Update: Studio Wildcard has released the official changelog, and as expected, this is for the PS5 visual enhancements!

Current ARK Official Client Version: v560.4

Current Client Version: v560.4 – 03/19/2021

  • Optimizations for PS5 visual enhancements

It seems Studio Wildcard has not released any official patch notes just yet. However, there is a huge possibility that this patch brings back the visual enhancements rolled out and then pulled due to performance issues. Here’s what was said then:

As for the latest gameplay-related changes, here’s the latest round of fixes applied on March 11:

PS4:

Current Version: v560.1 – 03/11/2021

Gotham Knights Release Delayed to 2022

If you were looking forward to WB Games Montreal’s multiplayer-focused action game Gotham Knights, you’ll have to wait a wee bit longer. Warner Bros. has today announced that the Gotham Knights release window has been pushed back to sometime in 2022!

This was shared over on Twitter where the following messages was shared:

Gotham Knights will now launch worldwide in 2022

We are giving the game more time to deliver the best possible experience for players. Thank you to our amazing fans for your tremendous support of Gotham Knights. We look forward to showcasing more of the game in the coming months.

While I can’t say I’m surprised, I’m still a little bummed about this, especially since the game was part of our most anticipated of 2021 list.

How Streamers Influence Gaming Trends and Popularity

For the better part of a decade, the role of a “video game streamer” has gone through many evolutions. Most fans of streamers immediately think of platforms like Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook. What some may not realize is Twitch started as “justin.tv” in 2005. Not only have games and technology advanced quite along in the 16 years since, but also the general public’s perspective of the gaming community. Back then, streamers might’ve been viewed in a negative light. I bet many of them might’ve heard things like “lazy”, “waste of time”, or “games will rot your brain.” Fast forward to 2021, streamers now hold tremendous influence over the popularity of games and that influence impacts the landscape of games greatly.

Copycat Gaming

As the gaming community has grown over the years, so have its streamers. We’ve seen individuals rise and fall in popularity, viewing records being broken, and worlds colliding. Everyone remembers when Tyler “Ninja” Blevins teamed up with Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and rappers Drake and Travis Scott. Fortnite was already relatively popular at that time, but its popularity went nuclear after that. Fortnite went from being this goofy, cartoony shooter to a massive entity that’s cemented itself in pop culture history. If there was a poll for the most influential games in the past decade, it wouldn’t be a complete list without Epic’s battle royale. I’m not saying that Ninja is the sole reason why Fortnite blew up, but his role as a streamer advertising the game daily certainly helped the cause.

Fortnite Update 3.05 February 18The influence a streamer can have on viewers can be absolute. Obviously, you have viewers who watch certain people based on the games they play, but also for their personalities. Whether you’re drawn to someone who looks like you, acts like you, or keeps you entertained for hours on end, you become a fan of them. That fandom leads to wanting to play the same games as them, and that’s where their impact is truly felt.

Let’s take a look at 2020: Right when the COVID-19 pandemic was beginning to affect our daily lives in March, Activision released its battle royale Call of Duty: Warzone. Call of Duty is already one of the biggest multiplayer games ever in existence. So naturally, adding a battle royale mode to the polarizing franchise drew enormous viewers. Watching the high-intensity gameplay of Nick Mercs and “TimtheTatman” only stoked the competitive fires behind the people watching them, which only increased the player base. We have an innate desire to either imitate or exceed someone we hold in high esteem. If Nick Mercs drops a full squad with load-outs trying to escape before the zone closes in, we think “I can do that”, and of course we can’t, but seeing him do it drives us to play the game.

The thing will Call of Duty is that it’s as if it possesses its own gravitational field. Regardless of what’s near it, the presence of COD will overpower it. Kind of what happened to Valorant. In April, Riot’s team-based multiplayer shooter entered Early Access. The game gained serious momentum with its comparisons to the tactical Counter Strike: Global Offensive and ability-centric Overwatch. With how fast the hype around Valorant died, you’d thought something horrible was wrong with the game. No, Valorant’s time to shine was put off, mainly due to the heavy attention streamers gave to Warzone, which is understandable, not only because of how popular Call of Duty is, but Warzone was still in that “honeymoon” phase of its release. According to Activision, Warzone grew to over 75 million players by the end of its first five months. Around the tail end of those five months, prominent streamers began migrating to another game: Among Us.

Modern Warfare & Warzone Playlist Update Today October 30

Back From the Dead

As we entered the heated summer months, the allure of Warzone slowly began to fade away. Not that people weren’t enjoying themselves, but the itch to play something new was becoming too irresistible. With the pandemic still affecting our daily lives, streamers discovered Among Us, a “new” party game that would bring people together. Developed and published by InnerSloth, you might be surprised to learn that Among Us was originally released back in 2018. So why are we just hearing about it now? The streamer impact.

There were moments through 2019 where the player base gradually increased, but near the end of 2019 Among Us experienced an exodus of players. When the calendar flipped to 2020, players slowly went back to the murder mystery, and then the player base exploded in July. That was around the time Twitch streamer Hafu created her now-famous “Hafu lobbies”, which subsequently pushed Among Us to unprecedented levels of popularity. Among Us is the perfect game to analyze when discussing the influence streamers have on games. This was, for lack of a better term, essentially a dead game. I don’t believe there were any plans on adding content to Among Us, until the massive boom in the player base. Due to the lack of additional content, streamers began adding their own mods to the game to create new gaming experiences. And it’s not like these mods were half-assed either, we’re talking about fully functional game modes that completely altered the experience. While Hafu stuck to the traditional way of playing Among Us, other streamers welcomed the added mods with open arms.

among us new map

Voted Content Creator of the Year at the 2020 Game Awards, YouTube streamer Valkyrae almost exclusively played Among Us non-traditionally. First, it was proximity chat, being able to talk throughout the game, but only to players within proximity to you. Then, we started seeing other roles being added like Jester, Sheriff, and Detective. This content was all player-made, not from the developer. These mods further increased the game’s popularity, but at the same time, it was clear that Among Us had an expiration date. InnerSloth announced a new map was imminent, but the general public’s interest in the game was fading; again, due to the lack of interest by streamers. The amount of Among Us streams started decreasing until finally, another game from the past rose to claim its place in the sun: Valorant.

Streamers Unite

Remember when I said there wasn’t really anything wrong with Valorant and how people were just preoccupied by Warzone’s recent launch? Well, streamers began migrating back to Riot’s multiplayer shooter as the Among Us craze started dying down. Even Hafu, probably the most dedicated Among Us player, was shortening her Among Us streams to play Valorant. And sure enough, the masses followed. The current number for Valorant’s player base is unknown, but simply based on observation it’s clearly a top streamed (at the time of writing) game at the moment. Ever since streamers like QuarterJade, Sykkuno, Ninja, Myth, Shroud, and Sydeon made Valorant their main game, it’s been near the top of Twitch’s most viewed games (currently flirting near 100K viewers). Similar to Among Us, that’s sure to have a ripple effect on players wanting to either get back into Valorant or download it for the first time.

It remains to be seen how long Valorant will hold its place atop the food chain, but what we can say for sure is streamers possess tremendous influence in the gaming community. They have the power to push waves of people to certain games, and that might be scary to think about. I’m not saying developers should 100 percent cater to the needs and wants of streamers, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea for studios to analyze what appeals to them. People relate to streamers because at the end of the day they’re just people who love playing games like the viewers who watch them. Sure, they might be connected with fame and fortune, but when it comes to “what game to play” it’s easier to pick up whatever your favorite streamer is playing than finding something yourself. And that’s where their influence lies: convenience. It’s convenient for people to turn on a stream, watch someone for a couple of hours, and decide to play that game. Studios know all about the importance of marketing their games, now it’s time to incorporate streamers in that marketing to maximize success.

The gaming community is forever evolving and this is its latest iteration. Regardless of whether or not you enjoy watching streams, we have to accept how important they are to gaming as a whole. They have the ability to push the medium to new heights and the influence to bring in more players. The emergence of streamers has only allowed the industry to grow and their presence is now important.

At the end of the day, it’s a streamer’s world and we’re just living in it.

DBZ Kakarot Update 1.51 for March 18 Kicks Out

Bandai Namco Entertainment has released a new patch for Dragon Ball Z Kakarot (DBZ Kakarot) today! Here’s what we know about DBZ Kakarot update 1.51 for March 18!

For those expecting to see some major content drop or changes included in this update, prepared to be disappointed as the 270mb (Xbox reportedly 8GB) update is simply for adjustments, which are unknown at this time.

DBZ Kakarot Update 1.51 for March 18 Patch Notes:

Taken from the PS4 history log:

  • Made other adjustments

On the possible side of things, the PC client also received this update, and although no reports have verified this yet, this update may potentially fix the Card Warriors Error Code 0x45 that surfaced with the last update. Though considering console players also got this update, we aren’t to sure that’s the case, unless the fix is being applied across all platforms. What’s more, the Xbox version apparently got a 8GB update instead, which is rather large for just some minor adjustments.

We’ll be sure to update this post once any specific fixes are either confirmed by Bandai, or the community itself.

Scarlet Nexus Release Date Announced With New Trailer

Bringing a new kind of action-role playing title to the table for current and next-gen players, Bandai Namco Entertainment has announced the Scarlet Nexus release date — revealed along with a brand new trailer that shows off what to expect from the game.

With the game developed by Bandai Namco Studios themselves, here’s the new Kasane trailer courtesy of the developers.

For a better idea of the story and game, here’s an overview straight from the official Bandai Namco website.

In the far distant future, a psionic hormone was discovered in the human brain, granting people extra-sensory powers and changed the world as we knew it. As humanity entered this new era, deranged mutants known as Others began to descend from the sky with a hunger for human brains. Highly resistant to conventional attack methods, extreme measures needed to be taken to battle the overwhelming threat and preserve humanity. Those with acute extra-sensory abilities, known as psionics, were our only chance to fight the onslaught from above. Since then, psionics have been scouted for their talents and recruited to the Other Suppression Force (OSF), humanity’s last line of defense.

Featuring a dual story, begin your adventure with either Yuito Sumeragi, an energetic recruit from a prestigious political family or Kasane Randall, the mysterious scout whose power and skill has gained great notoriety among the OSF. As their different experiences interweave with each other, it is only then that you will reveal the full story and unlock all the mysteries of a Brain Punk future caught between technology and psychic abilities in Scarlet Nexus.

Speaking of Bandai Namco games, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 got its latest update in patch 1.26 last March 17 — which you can read about here.

Scarlet Nexus will be released for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One,  and PC on June 24.

It appears the biggest tournament name in the fighting game community just got acquired by some of the biggest names in the video game industry, as the EVO Championship Series has been acquired by Sony and RTS — with an EVO Online 2021 event being planned and scheduled for this August!

With the last update on their Facebook and Twitter pages being almost one year ago following the cancellation of their online event last year, EVO is making a fierce comeback under

Here’s the press release from Sony and RTS on their acquisition of EVO, aka the Evolution Championship Series.

Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC (“SIE”) and RTS, a new venture born out of Endeavor’s esports business, announced today that they have acquired the assets and properties of the Evolution Championship Series (“Evo”), the world’s largest fighting game event, from Triple Perfect, Inc., through a joint venture esports partnership.

Through this new partnership, Tony and Tom Cannon, co-founders of Evo, will continue to be closely involved as key advisors to ensure that Evo remains a one-of-a-kind, grassroots competitive platform for fighting game players and fans around the globe. This collaboration will propel Evo even further as the premier fighting game tournament and foster the continued growth of the competitive gaming community on all platforms.

With the support of world-class publishers, Evo is returning this year as Evo Online, a fully online competition taking place August 6 – 8 and 13 -15. Entry will be free, and players in North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America* will be able to compete in BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment’s Tekken 7, Capcom’s Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Warner Bros. Games’ Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate**, and Arc System Works’ Guilty Gear™ -Strive- in an open format. The online qualifiers will be livestreamed for fans, and more details will be shared in the coming weeks on evo.gg.

“Fighting games have been a vital part of PlayStation’s legacy and our community since the very beginning, and we’ve been thrilled to partner with Evo over the years,” said Steven Roberts, VP, Global Competitive Gaming, SIE. “This joint acquisition with RTS marks a new chapter of collaboration with Evo’s co-founders, Tom and Tony Cannon, and their passionate community of fighting game fans.”

“Evo is a unique and iconic community unlike any other in the fighting game space, and we’re proud to be partnering with the SIE team and the legends that are Tom and Tony—as well as Mark Julio as Head of Business Development—to help grow Evo,” said Stuart Saw, CEO, RTS. “We’ve got so many exciting plans in store for this year and beyond.”

“Tom and I are incredibly excited by the partnership with SIE and RTS,” said Tony Cannon, co-founder of Evo. “Both companies bring a wealth of experience and share our passion for what makes the fighting game community so great. We are looking forward to working with them to launch Evo to the next level while remaining true to our roots.”

As a result of the acquisition, Evo will be operated by the recently formed joint venture between SIE and RTS. Terms of this transaction including the acquisition cost and ownership split of the joint venture are not disclosed due to contractual commitments.

The EVO Team, represented by founders Tony and Tom Cannon, have also released a statement on the acquisition.

“Evo would not be possible without the collective passion and collaboration of the fighting game community, and we’re deeply grateful for your dedication over the past 25 years. We know last year was challenging due to the pandemic, and the circumstances surrounding the cancellation of Evo Online involving a former team member who has been completely separated from our company.

We want to reaffirm that harassment or abuse of any kind has no place within Evo or any of our future events, and we’re taking every precaution to make sure members of our community will always be treated with the respect, dignity and decency you deserve.

In order to deliver on the trust you have all put in Evo, we realize that we need an experienced strategic partner who truly respects the spirit of the FGC. This is why we’re excited to announce that Evo has become part of the joint partnership of Sony Interactive Entertainment and RTS. The new partnership is committed to bringing amazing tournaments and competitive gaming experiences back to you this year and beyond.

We’re thrilled to work with the teams at PlayStation and RTS to bring you Evo 2021 Online this August. More information on the event will follow.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your continued support. -Tony and Tom Cannon

The last time we reported on EVO, the 2020 public event was cancelled due to the ongoing global pandemic.

The new EVO Online 2021 event is now scheduled to take place on two weekends, on August 6-8 and August 13-15, and will feature games such as Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition, Tekken 7, and Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate.

Apex Legends Turns Crafting Off for Server-Crashing Exploit

With Apex Legends’ Chaos Theory title update, Respawn Entertainment seems to have borked something as well, as there’s an Apex Legends server-crashing exploit making the rounds. Unfortunately, there’s no real fix today, so Respawn is rolling out a bandaid in the meantime.

Over on Twitter, Respawn announced that crafting will temporarily be turned off to mitigate the issues the exploit has caused.

To address a server-crashing @playapex exploit, we’re temporarily turning off crafting (including replicators, materials, replicator drops, etc.) across all playlists, starting now.

We will turn crafting back on after we’re able to finish testing our planned fix. Stay tuned!

From the sound of it, Apex Legends players can expect a hotfix to be rolled out soon-ish, Once we know more about that, we’ll let our readers know.

Sea of Solitude The Director’s Cut Review: Conquering Inner Demons

Sea of Solitude The Director’s Cut takes you on an emotionally driven narrative with confronting your inner demons. On this journey, you control Kay, a young girl who’s on the verge of drowning from depression, self-doubt, anger, and loneliness. Kay’s exploration within herself reveals hidden truths about herself and her family, as she tries to free herself from her mental burdens. Sea of Solitude aims to shed light on the importance of a healthy mental state, and how easily you can fall into darkness.

Consumed by Darkness

Kay’s story begins on a boat, floating aimlessly in the middle of a dark sea. After her boat gets attacked by an underwater sea monster, she finds herself in the middle of a broken city. As Kay navigates her way through the city, she encounters various monsters that represents her inner demons. Surprisingly, Kay is depicted in the same darkness as the monsters. Throughout the game, you learn Kay’s dark appearance is due to her being corrupted by all sorts of painful emotions. Kay encounters many obstacles as she tries to confront her past, mainly the underwater monster. The monster tries to swallow up Kay when she’s in the water, and this represents her own self-sabotage. Even if people want to better themselves, like Kay, there’s always going to be that lingering feeling that it’s not worth the trouble. It’s a slippery slope on the path to redemption; one bad step and the darkness will swallow you up.

Initially, it can be argued that Sea of Solitude’s setting is the afterlife. Memories of Kay’s past begin to surface that show while Kay is a victim through all of this, she’s also contributed in some way to the darkness consuming her. For example her brother, Sunny, was bullied relentlessly at school. It’s even inferred that Sunny might’ve been murdered by his so-called “friends.” Sunny tried to reach out to Kay for help, but his sister brushed him off that they were just playing. Kay experiences tremendous guilt for not truly listening to Sunny and not being there to protect him.

Kay’s troubled past does not end with her brother. When pleading with a monster that she has to help her boyfriend, the monster asks, “What if you can’t help? What if you only make things worse?” As someone who also struggles with self-doubt, this hits home. Of course Kay is determined to help, but sometimes you just can’t. Kay’s reflection on what happened with her boyfriend conveys the feeling of wanting to help, but failing and how that affects a person. Sea of Solitude tackles each of these negative experiences aggressively, but with care and precision. The dialogue between Kay and her monsters cuts deep, but in an almost meditative way. It’s clear by the end of the game the events almost certainly take place inside Kay’s mind, so her conversations and actions are all against herself.

Exploring the Broken City

The broken city that Kay travels through could be portrayed as a representation of her broken mind. Kay was blissfully ignorant with many situations in her life, such as her brother being bullied and her parents overflowing resentment toward each other. Sea of Solitude does not have a mini map, so it’s easy to lose your way. Instead, Kay has the ability to fire a flare which will lead her to the next destination. Not only is this a unique feature for map awareness, but also because Kay’s father was a sailor and taught her the importance of using flares if lost. It’s little details like this that help complement the overall experience.

Aside from using flares, Kay’s main source of transportation are the boat and her own two legs. Admittedly, I’m not too fond of boat mechanics, but Sea of Solitude makes it fairly simple to operate. Some points of the game Kay would continue to walk forward, even after I stopped moving her myself. I’m not sure if my Nintendo Switch was suffering from Joy-Con drift or if it was a bug in the game. Although the ghost walking resulted in Kay being eaten a few times, it didn’t hamper my playthrough too bad.

Road Toward Healing

Sea of Solitude tackles a delicate subject in mental health, but does so with grace and understanding. While it doesn’t sugarcoat trauma, Sea of Solitude also takes possible trigger moments into consideration. Developer Jo-Mei accurately shows the struggle in wanting to confront your past, no matter how destructive and painful it may be. Kay’s journey is as much of an introspective look inside herself as it is to everyone else. Regardless of the life you live, there’s a good chance these emotions affected you or someone you know. No matter how hard it may be, it’s important to not only discuss problems with others, but also with yourself. As we go through life, there will be moments of weakness. Moments where we feel we’re not good enough, don’t deserve to be happy, or that ultimately nothing is worth it. Left unchecked, those bleak and dreary thoughts will seed themselves in your mind and begin to grow uncontrollably. The message behind Sea of Solitude is so profound and should be experienced, not only to conquer your own inner demons, but to also shine light on their existence.

Score: 7.5/10

Pros:

  • Highlights the importance of mental health
  • Properly conveys the struggles of depression, loneliness, hate
  • Beautiful art style
  • Dialogue felt real and raw

Cons:

  • Bit confusing at the beginning
  • Camera sometimes gets stuck in weird angles
  • Still unsure what ultimately became of Kay and her family
