EA: “Continuing to Listen” Regarding Star Wars Battlefront II Beta Feedback & Loot Crates, Clarifies Progression System

While I liked what I played of the Star Wars Battlefront II beta, it’s understandable why a lot of people are upset at how the beta seemed to emphasize loot crates when it came to player progression, and the fact that it’ll be purchasable by real-world money has a few people noticeably worried.

It seems EA has heard the uproar. Over on the publisher’s official website, a post went live today thanking the fans for playing the beta and for offering their thoughts. According to EA, they are “continuing to listen” to the fans outside of the beta when it comes to gameplay (Strike mode, etc.) and of course, loot crates. Additionally, character progression is explained as well, which is thankfully, good news.

Rest assured, we’re continuing to listen to you coming out of Beta. We’re taking a look at some of the most discussed topics, from Crates and progression to Strike mode (which we’re considering changing to a best of three), the Specialist’s Infiltration ability (which might be a little too overpowered) and more. Oh, and the First Order Flametrooper needs some work – we agree he could use a little more… firepower. We are also looking into more ways to allow players to stay and play together as a team – for launch, we’ll have a new feature for you that rewards all players in a spawn wave. These are just a few examples of how your feedback is helping to shape the game.

We know you have a lot of questions about Crates and progression, so we want to clarify a few things, as the complete system was not in the Beta and will continue to be tuned over time:

  • There are many things you can earn in the game, including weapons, attachments, credits, Star Cards, Emotes, Outfits and Victory Poses.
  • As a balance goal, we’re working towards having the most powerful items in the game only earnable via in-game achievements.
  • Crates will include a mix of of Star Cards, Outfits, Emotes or Victory Poses.
  • Players earn crates by completing challenges and other gameplay milestones, or by purchasing them with in-game credits or Crystals, our premium currency.
  • If you get a duplicate Star Card in a crate, you will get crafting parts which you can then use to help upgrade the Star Card of your choice.
  • And lastly, you have to earn the right to be able to upgrade Star Cards and unlock most Weapons. You can only upgrade or unlock them if you have reached a high enough rank, which is determined by playing the game.

We also have heard some players are looking for a way to play where all players will have the same set of Star Cards with flattened values. Like everything else, we will be continually making necessary changes to ensure the game is fun for everyone. We will work to make sure the system is balanced both for players who want to earn everything, as well as for players who are short on time and would like to move faster in their progress towards various rewards.

It seems a certain EA Community Manager was right when he said “nothing is final.” I gather, I’m not the only one happy that the most powerful items can only be obtained by ranking up, and actually playing, and not, y’know, using a ton of cash to buy a ton of loot crates in the hopes of getting lucky.

Has the damage been done? What else can EA do to ensure to gamers that Star Wars Battlefront II won’t feel like a pay-to-win title? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Titanfall 2 Developer Respawn Working on “Super Secret” VR Game for Oculus

While Titanfall 3 might be an inevitability according to Respawn Entertainment, that might be not the next game to come out of the studio. We know that Respawn is working on an unannounced Star Wars game for EA, but it looks like there’s another project keeping the studio busy.

Over on the studio’s official website, Respawn has announced that it’s working on a “super secret” project for the Oculus Rift! Before anyone asks, no, it’s not Star Wars or Titanfall-related, so drop those dreams of yours where you’re piloting an actual Titan in VR, alright?

We did get announcement trailer of sorts that while doesn’t reveal the actual game, it does hint that it’s about warfare and will involve guns. Check out the letter Director Peter Hirschmann wrote for the announcement.

While the game remains secret (spoiler: it’s not Titanfall or Star Wars™), our relationship with Oculus is now out in the open. We couldn’t be happier to have such a great partner, and to be building our game on such an amazing platform as the Rift.

There are so many cool parts to making a game in VR, but perhaps the most intense one is emotion. While you know you’re wearing a headset, your brain processes VR on an emotional level. Though you’re in a simulation, you feellike you’re there. It’s all kinds of awesome.

So as a developer, game assets you’ve seen a hundred times on a monitor suddenly become real when you put the headset on. The sense of scale, the sense of presence, there’s nothing else like it. It’s the difference between using your mouse to rotate an object in an editor and walking around it in real life. It is a true privilege to build a game in this kind of immersive world.

Unfortunately, the studio needs to go “dark again,” and it seems we won’t be hearing about this game for quite some time. If it’s the same quality as Titanfall 2, then it should be something special.

Phil Spencer: Not Optimistic About Xbox-PlayStation Cross-Play, Original Xbox Backwards Compatibility Coming This Year

Speaking to Gamespot at the Brazil Game Show, Xbox’s Phil Spencer commented on his relationship with Sony and the state of cross-play, and also gave an update on when players can expect original Xbox backwards compatibility to come to Xbox One.

First, he had this to say about cross-play. Be warned, he’s not very optimistic!

“We talk to Sony all the time. With Minecraft on PlayStation, we have to be one of the biggest games on their platform in terms of sales and gameplay … Same with Nintendo. The relationship with Nintendo on this front has been strong. They’ve been great supporters and we continue to collaborate with them. But I think Sony’s view is different. They should talk about what their view is…”

“I have a real struggle making comments about their motivation or timelines. I know there is a certain view that says if my friends have this console, they can’t play with people who buy another console. That’s a reason they go buy my console … That reason is not going to go away. So we’re putting Minecraft out there as one of the biggest games on any platform and allowing people to play together regardless of what device they bought. I don’t think everybody is taking that same approach to the ecosystem. So I’m never going to call anything a lost cause but I think some of the fundamental reasons and certain scenarios, they’re not really going away. So I don’t know what would change.”

As for when players can expect original Xbox games to be playable on Xbox One, Spencer had this to say:

“We’re close, we’re really close … I have a little dashboard I go to and I can see all the games [and] where they are in getting approvals in the pipeline. I know the games that are coming for the original Xbox but I don’t think we’ve announced them all. We have to do this in partnership with partners, but we’re still on track. I feel really good. The games look great.”

When asked if he’s certain about a 2017 launch, he responded with, “Oh yeah!”

Bad news about cross-play, but good news about backwards compatibility!

In other Xbox news, four new Xbox One S bundles have been announced for the end of 2017, Microsoft accidentally advertised Sony’s PlayStation Move, and Xbox One X supersampling has been discussed.

Gran Turismo Sport Demo Played by Over 1 Million, Game Director “Surprised” by Player Count

The Gran Turismo Sport demo has now come to an end. The PS4 exclusive experience ran for three days, and gave players a chance to check out the Sport, Campaign and Arcade modes. Multiplayer was enabled, too, allowing for a thorough testing of online functionality against other players. Any in-game credit earned, as well as unlocked vehicles, will be transferable to the full game when it launches on October 17.

As for how many players test-drove the demo, GT Sport‘s game director Kaz Yamauchi tweeted out that it had surpassed 1 million:

That’s a pretty good figure for a PS4 exclusive racing title. It also took place during the week, when some potential demo testers may have been busy. Weekends are generally better for peak player counts.

Were you one of the 1 million+ players? If so, what did you think of the demo build?

In other GT Sport news, the game’s complete car list has been revealed. You should also watch this PSVR gameplay, which shows off the Nurburgring Track

Epic Games Issues Ultimate Fortnite Cheaters Bans, Two Players Getting Sued

Two of the biggest Fortnite Battle Royale cheaters have been caught by Epic Games, and are now facing lawsuits. The two cheaters — a Mr Broom and a Mr Vraspir — are accused of infringing on the game’s copyright by altering code.

The pair have been linked to a cheat provider, acting as moderators on a site that assists players in using exploits. Both defendants face a fine of $150,000.

In the publicly available case documents, you’ll mostly find a swamp of legalese. However, one line sticks out to me as interesting:

“Fortnite has been extremely popular. It already has over seven million players and is on track to be Epic’s most successful game yet.”

We knew Fortnite had seen a lot of success, but now we know that it’s on track to become Epic Games’ most successful title!

Epic Games wasn’t lying when it said that Fortnite cheaters would be punished. Hopefully this helps deter other players from going to the dark side of cheats.

In other Fortnite news, here are the latest patch notes and changes in the recent update, and here’s a bunch of impressive stats that Epic Games has shared

Star Wars Battlefront II Loot Crates: EA Community Manager Says “Nothing Is Final”

The Star Wars Battlefront II loot crate system has caused controversy amongst players, with many believing that random drops that reward in-game buffs is unfair. This is heightened by the fact that crates will be purchasable with crystals, meaning the more money players invest, the bigger chance they have at getting more powerful loot.

There has been a lot of social media activity surrounding the loot crate issue, with EA employees receiving countless complaints. Twitter user @james176 messaged EA community manager Mat Everett, who responded with, “The game is in Beta nothing is final.”

Following the negative feedback being given, I don’t doubt that the loot system will be tweaked. However, rather than a total overhaul and scrapping of microtransactions, I think we’ll probably see a more generous distribution of in-game currency at the end of a match, or something similar.

What did you think of the loot system seen in the beta? Let us know.

In other Star Wars Battlefront II, DICE has assured players that they are reading “pretty much everything” on feedback, and we gave our impressions of the Starfighter Assault mode

Report: Star Wars Battlefront II Microtransaction Crystals Price Leaked by Amazon

With Star Wars Battlefront II employing a loot crate system for the game’s unlocks, Star Cards and more, it’s safe to assume that microtransactions will be part of the equation. While we didn’t get a sneak peek at how much each loot crate would cost in the Battlefront II beta, it seems online retailer Amazon has done the job for us.

In a product listing for “Star Wars Battlefront II Crystals,” we see packs ranging in price from $5 to as much as $100. Unfortunately, the price has since been pulled, but the actual product is still up for everyone to see. If you haven’t heard of “Crystals” in the game, you’re not alone, but it will be for Star Cards and loot crates as the product description plainly says so.

STAR WARS Battlefront II Crystals Pack* Use Star Wars Battlefront II virtual currency Crystals to purchase Crates, giving you a selection of new Star Cards, weapons, emotes, and other valuable resources to continue your Star Wars hero’s journey.

While nothing has been announced by EA officially, it looks like this thing is the real deal. Let’s just hope the loot crates and how it’s handled in-game won’t be something akin to pay-to-win, or it’d mar an otherwise, outstanding experience — at least based on what we played on the beta.

The good thing is, DICE has said that they “pretty much” read everything when it comes to feedback, so let’s hope they can convince the EA corporate overlords to ease up on loot crates and how important they are to the gaming experience in Battlefront II.

Battlefield 1 Update 1.15 Now Deployed by DICE, Is the Big October Patch (Update)

Update:

DICE has finally released the patch notes! Before that though, the studio has announced that 40-man Operations are suspended for matchmaking purposes. Have you ever joined a server without anyone in it? Yeah, DICE is fixing that and apparently disabling the 40-man Operations should help that a lot.

Based on continuous feedback from our community and an ongoing effort to ensure successful matchmaking for Operations servers we have disabled the 40-player option. We’ve determined that by allowing servers to only support 64-player Operations, match joining times are kept at a minimum and the probability of joining an active populated server is drastically increased. Our goal is to unite our players under this fan-favorite mode and consistently provide more instances of matches quicker. As with every improvement, we will continue to monitor experiences and take your feedback into consideration. See you on the Battlefield!

Now that’s out of the way, read on below for the full patch notes!

SPECIALIZATIONS & ASSIGNMENTS

  • The Concealed Rescue Specialization has been changed and no longer deploys smoke automatically on a downed squad mate. For smoke to be deployed on a downed squad mate, a squad mate with the Specialization must now spot the downed player.
  • Fixed an issue with the Stimulant Syringe Specialization where the revived soldier would not receive the sprint boost.
  • Fixed an issue with Healing Hands Challenge #1 “Heal 10 Different Squad Members”. It is now cumulative and tracks between matches.
  • Fixed issues where Soldier Assignment progress was not being displayed properly.

WEAPONS & GADGETS

  • Changed the Ottoman Standard Issue Rifle from the Martini Henry to the G98. This is more historically accurate, and should be a better matchup against the British SMLE.
  • Increased Tripwire-HE blast damage from 80 to 85, enough to score an Assist Counts As Kill against an enemy with the Flak Specialization.
  • Fixed an issue where throwing a smoke grenade would prevent the thrower from performing other actions for a short time.
  • Changed mid-length Parabellum (25-50 left) reload from 6.75 to 6.85 to match animation position.
  • Fixed an issue where 3P Bayonet Charge VO could be cut off if the charge started immediately after the ability recharged.
  • Added missing emblem to FA Automatic Rifle.
  • Fixed an issue where no audio would play for automatic weapons in single fire mode for 3P soldiers.
  • Fixed grenade resupply audio.
  • Added Press or Hold option for Bayonet Charge.

VEHICLES

  • Fixed overly bright mane and tail on horses in Tsaritsyn cathedral.
  • Both gunners of Ilya Muromets now show hit markers when hitting enemy players.
  • The Assault Truck’s sensitivity is now affected by sensitivity options.
  • Fixed an issue where 3P enemy footsteps could be heard too loudly when the local player was in a vehicle.
  • Fixed an issue where the grenade throw emote from a soldier inside the Putilov-Garford Armored car could be heard from very far away.
  • Selecting a friendly soldier or vehicle in the deploy screen will now show their current health as a circular bar around the selected icon.
  • Fixed an issue where bomber weapons were inaudible from 3P camera in seat 1 of large bombers.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented players in a squad spawning in a plane controlled by a squad member if the plane was outside of the soldier combat area.

MAPS & MODES

  • Brusilov Keep: Fixed issue where players could spawn in fire.
  • Fixed an issue with Mother Voice Over on Operations Globe screen.
  • Fixed an issue where English was playing instead of Localized MX and SA languages for Mountain Fort Defender Loss VO.
  • Fixed occluding issues with factory ruin pillars in Tsaritsyn.
  • Enabled damage on barbed wire close to capture point D on Galicia in Conquest.
  • Fixed floating dirt mounds around the train wreck on Volga River.
  • Operation Brusilov Offensive’s final rating is now correctly rated out of 24 instead of 30.
  • Fixed an issue where Operations were geographically misplaced.
  • Removed vehicles from Back to Basics Conquest game type.
  • Fixed flickering bright snow on Galicia.
  • Echoes activated in Lupkow Pass.
  • Fixed an issue where more than one piece of music could play during the briefing of an Operation.
  • Removed Elite pickups from Domination.

Original Story:

Remember when we reported a few days ago that DICE said the big Battlefield 1 October update will be out “very soon?” Well, it seems that’s today! Yep, Battlefield 1 update 1.15 is out now on all platforms! If you were experiencing some BF1 down time, this is why.

The BF1 update clocks in at a hefty 3.6GB on the PlayStation 4 version, and should be full of gameplay tweaks, new dog tags and even new “gameplay settings.” DICE has yet to reveal the patch notes for the Battlefield 1 update, but we’ll update the post once they do. We do know that the Operations game mode will finally be available in the server browser, though, which is a very welcome tweak.

While you’re waiting for the big BF1 patch to finish downloading, check out the details on when the new Operation Campaign will be released. We also did a feature on the top 10 worst Battlefield teammates to have Seriously, you need to read this.

Latest Fortnite Battle Royale Patch Adds Report Cheater Button, Player Stats & More

A new Fortnite Battle Royale patch has been deployed. Update 1.7.1 improves overall game stability and adds quality-of-life improvements for both Battle Royale and Save the World

Those with less powerful PC hardware will be happy to hear that DirectX 10 support has been re-enabled. And, for those who have been running into a lot of cheaters, a new report button should make it easier to bring justice down upon them. Player stats are also now viewable via the “Stats” tab.

Here’s the full list of Fortnite Battle Royale patch notes:

GENERAL

  • BattlEye has been added to our existing anti-cheat detection

BATTLE ROYALE

GAMEPLAY

  • We have increased the travel movement of the Battle Bus and increased skydiving velocity in order to offer an alternative strategy to jumping out of the Bus at the first possible moment.
    • Increased Battle Bus movement speed by 50% (from 4000 to 6000).
    • Increased skydiving terminal velocity by 50% (from 4000 to 6000).
  • The final storm safe zone will now close completely instead of holding at a 10 cm radius.
  • Players can now search supply drops without interruption from storm damage.
  • Improved the pre-game warmup UI to indicate the server is “Waiting for players to connect” and “Battle Bus launching” when the lobby is full.
  • Fixed the glider occasionally not auto-deploying at the correct height.
  • Fixed an issue which caused Supply Drops to become stuck in the air after player-built structures beneath them were destroyed.

WEAPONS

  • Changes from the Live Update on Oct. 6:
    • Increased Semi-Auto Sniper Rifle damage by 50%.
      • This weapon was often passed up because of its lower damage. This increase will put it closer in line with its intended effectiveness.
    • Decreased Scoped Assault Rifle damage by 33%.
      • This weapon was too effective at its current role and needed to be scaled back slightly.
    • Decreased Grenade, Grenade Launcher, and Rocket Launcher environmental damage to 375 (was 450).
      • Metal forts will now require two explosive blasts (instead of one). Late-game bases are too easily destroyed and we want to promote building diversity.
    • Increased Rocket Launcher reload time by 20%.
      • It’s a little too easy to spam rockets. We want the Rocket Launcher to be a powerful weapon, but it’s a little too good right now.
    • Increased Submachine Gun damage by 10%.
      • The Submachine Gun is underperforming at close to medium range combat. This damage increase will improve its effectiveness slightly. We’ll continue to keep an eye on it.
  • Renamed several weapons
    • Renamed ‘Semi-Auto Rifle’ to ‘Assault Rifle (Burst).’
    • Renamed ‘Semi-Auto Handgun’ to ‘Pistol.’
    • Renamed ‘Semi-Auto Shotgun’ to ‘Tactical Shotgun.’
  • Fixed an issue which prevented explosive weapons from damaging Supply Drops.
  • Fixed a bug which caused the pump action shotgun to occasionally double-fire.
  • Fixed a bug which caused grenades to occasionally deal no damage.
  • Fixed an issue which caused bullet impact effects to only be being visible to players in the immediate vicinity.
  • Fixed an issue which caused the weapon reticle to disappear.

DUOS/SQUADS

  • Eliminations will now be awarded to the player who downs an enemy regardless of who finishes off that player in the DBNO (Down, But Not Out) state.
  • Increased health after being revived from the DBNO state.
    • Health increased from 25 to 30.
  • Shields will no longer protect you from damage while in the DBNO state.
    • You will keep any remaining shield if a teammate revives you.
  • Friendly fire damage will now display the appropriate visual hit effects.
  • Fixed squad’s finishing placement displaying the incorrect number in some cases.
  • Fixed an issue which caused tires to bounce DBNO players.
  • Fixed an issue which allowed traps to bounce players in the DBNO state.

UI

  • There is now a Report Player button on the end-of-match screen to report players.
  • Critical hit damage on shielded players is now displayed in blue, like other displayed shielded damage numbers.
  • The color of each player’s marker in a duo/squad are now consistent with everywhere they are displayed.
  • Player indicators on the minimap will now match the color the player was assigned instead of all players showing as a cyan color.
  • Changed the item drop icon on the Inventory screen from a trash can to a “drop arrow” to more clearly indicate its purpose.
  • You can now hold down ‘Shift’ before dragging an item to only drop one of that item.
  • Teammates will no longer show up as eliminated when they are loading into the map.
  • Fixed an issue which prevented eliminated players from entering text in the Send Feedback interface when using a controller.

WORLD

  • Added name labels to the map for existing locations.
    • Tomato Town
    • Dusty Depot
    • Salty Springs
Fortnite%2Fblog%2F1-7-1-patch-notes%2FMiniMapAthena-2048x2048-257033270bfbd1f8bd239d3fc98dd2a6438e85e4
  • Added a few structures near Tomato Town.
  • Added new potential chest & loot locations to the northernmost and southernmost wooden bridges over the river, as well as to Lonely Lodge and the container area to the west.
  • Fixed certain basements being blocked, which prevented access to underground treasure chests and loot.
  • Fixed issues which caused trees to float above the terrain.
  • Fixed some trees that previously could not be destroyed.
  • General bug fixes and improvements to the world.

PERFORMANCE

We’re continuously working on optimizing performance, and are actively investigating recent reports of lower frame rates in areas with dense foliage.

  • Fixed multiple issues which could cause a brief freeze in game.
  • Fixed a significant hitch that occurred when the last player was eliminated from the game.
  • Fixed a hitch which occurred after the Battle Bus skydiving phase completed.
  • Reduced hitching on PlayStation 4.

AUDIO

  • Addressed multiple issues which caused sound to only come out of the left or right speaker.
  • Moved Battle Bus ignition audio into pre-game warmup phase.
  • General mix adjustments.

SPECTATING

  • Fixed player directional hit indicators not visible while spectating

SAVE THE WORLD

GAMEPLAY

  • Challenge the Horde
    • Progression is now determined by the players progress in the Save the World campaign
      • If the player has finished Plankerton Outpost 3 in the Save the World campaign, then all of Stonewood and the first three Plankerton zones will be unlocked in Challenge the Horde mode.
    • Quests now have a minimum difficulty rather than a required one.
      • If a quests states: Complete “Challenge 3 in a rating 9 zone,” the challenge can now be completed in any zone 9 or higher rather than in a zone with 9 difficulty specifically.
    • When entering a Tier 1, 2 or 3 zone, all challenges within that zone are now unlocked by default.
      • This will make progressing through the mode quicker.
    • All Outlander fragments now respawn between horde waves.
      • All of the remaining existing fragments are removed and new fragments are spawned at potentially new locations.
    • Outlander Fragments were spawning too far away in Horde mode.
      • Now Outlanders should have more than enough time to gather fragments before each wave.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the evolution choice between Shadowshard and Obsidian to always default to the Obsidian evolution.
  • Fixed an issue which prevented players from storing multiple stacks of building resources and ammunition in their Storm Shield storage.
    • Players can now store multiple stacks of resources and ammunition in their storage again.
  • Fixed an issue that caused players with certain video cards to experience extreme saturation during night sections.
  • Fixed an issue which caused the Smasher to continue to charge for too long if it has broken a piece of the environment or a building and there is nothing to attack within a reasonable distance.
  • Fixed a bug which caused the amount of Fortitude, Offense, Resistance, and Tech shared between party members to be capped to a lower value than intended.
  • Updated Teleporter placement range by increasing starting Teleporter range to 15 tiles, and reducing each Teleporter range upgrade increase to 5 tiles.

HEROES

  • Fixed a bug which caused ‘TEDDY’ and Shock Towers to one-shot monsters at high level, and allowed them to be damaged by effects like bees and poison clouds.
    • ‘TEDDY’ and Shock Tower now use the environmental object damage model rather than character damage model.
      • Increased the health of ‘TEDDY’, Shock Tower, and ‘BASE’.
  • Increased ability damage, health, and shield values on all heroes.
    • All of these values increase depending on the on rarity of hero
      • Increased by 10% every 5 levels, to a maximum of 30% for Uncommon up to 60% for Legendary
    • These values were previously scaling relative to weapons without alterations and were falling well behind the curve at high levels as a result.
    • No change at low levels, gradually scaling up with difficulty.
    • Hero abilities and gadgets will have greater impact on monsters at higher levels.
  • Weapons will deal more damage to monsters quicker at high level.
  • Adjusted enemy health and damage values as a result of the Hero scaling changes
    • No change at low levels.
    • Increases gradually with difficulty.
    • Monsters will damage players slighter slower at high level.
  • When using Bull Rush to charge at a charging Smasher, the ability will no longer be interrupted prematurely.

MISSIONS

  • Fixed an issue which caused the Launcher to appear early in the “Deliver the Bomb” mission when a player joined an ‘in-progress’ zone.
  • Fixed an issue that caused some players to be unable to activate the bomb in the “Deliver the Bomb” missions.

GENERAL

  • Fixed a crash that occasionally occurred when canceling a game rejoin.
  • Re-enabled support for DirectX 10.
  • Fixed several client crashes.

ONLINE

  • Matchmaking Region is now available under the GAME tab in the options menu.
    • This tool shows all available regions and a representative ping value at the time of login.
      • We are working to improve this tool further to refresh ping values.

UI

  • Fixed an issue that caused Homebase Storm Shield power levels to always incorrectly show as 0 out of 10.
  • Corrected a typo in the Challenge the Horde loading screen.
  • Corrected a few typos found in perk names for Scavenger Heroes.
  • Updated names, descriptions, and bonus descriptors for all of the trap and weapon ingredient nodes on the Horde skill tree.

ESRB Doesn’t Consider Loot Boxes as a Form of Gambling

With games like Overwatch, Battlefield 1, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, and even the soon-tob-released games Call of Duty: WWII and Star Wars Battlefront II all featuring loot boxes of some kind, it’s safe to say that this latest gaming trend is here to stay.

While some might like the idea of unlocking random stuff, it’s a pain in the neck for those looking for one specific item. With that in mind, there has been calls from the gaming enthusiast crowd for the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) to classify loot crates, loot boxes and the sort as some form of gambling. But nope, not going to happen as the ESRB doesn’t see it as a form of gambling at all.

Here’s the statement an ESRB spokesperson sent to Kotaku

ESRB does not consider loot boxes to be gambling. While there’s an element of chance in these mechanics, the player is always guaranteed to receive in-game content (even if the player unfortunately receives something they don’t want). We think of it as a similar principle to collectible card games: Sometimes you’ll open a pack and get a brand new holographic card you’ve had your eye on for a while. But other times you’ll end up with a pack of cards you already have.

Additionally, the ESRB has mentioned that any game with real gambling involved will receive an “Adults Only” rating, though there’s also a classification of “Simulated Gambling” that most games featuring loot boxes aren’t part of too.

It’s fast becoming the reality that loot boxes aren’t all that it’s cracked up to be. With more and more gamers voicing their displeasure at how this little feature is now used as a microtransaction tool, expect more gamers to hate it in future games.

Speaking of loot boxes, check out the first-ever loot boxes you get in the Star Wars Battlefront II beta in this video.

Are you against loot boxes? Is there another alternative to this at all?
