YouTubers Involved in CS: GO Lotto Controversy Escape Fines, FTC Orders Disclosures From “Influencers”

In case you didn’t know, a big controversy happened last year with big-name YouTubers Trevor “TmarTn” Martin and Thomas “Syndicate” Cassell where the two were revealed to be co-owners of an online gambling site for CS: GO skins, which the YouTubers promoted without telling anyone.

Needless to say, a bunch of stuff were mentioned, YouTube “Influencers” and their ethics questioned and all that. Now, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has ordered TmarTn and Syndicate — and all influencers — to disclose if they have any connection to the stuff they promote in their videos.

According to the FTC report, Martin and Cassell are believed to also have paid YouTube influencers between $2,500 to $55,000 to promote the site on YouTube, Twitch, Twitter and Facebook, under the instruction that they do not say anything negative about it (the site). Unfortunately, it wasn’t disclosed which YouTubers were part of the paid gig orchestrated by Martin and Cassell.

The FTC has ordered Martin and Cassell to “clearly and conspicuously disclose any material connections with an endorser or between an endorser and any promoted product or service.” Aside from the forced disclosures, it doesn’t state that the two have paid any fines or penalized to what happened.

Maureen Ohlhausen, acting chariman of the FTC had this to say:

Consumers need to know when social media influencers are being paid or have any other material connection to the brands endorsed in their posts.

This action, the FTC’s first against individual influencers, should send a message that such connections must be clearly disclosed so consumers can make informed purchasing decisions.

The FTC isn’t stopping here, either. It has also sent 21 warning letters to unname “influencers” who were contacted earlier this year about Instagram posts with undisclosed endorsements as well.

Hopefully, this is the last time YouTube influencers are embroiled in something as shady moving forward. The video game media scene is already at an uphill in convincing readers, fans and the gaming populace that we aren’t paid PR mouthpieces.

Do you trust YouTubers when they endorse stuff? How do you determine whether they’re really positive on a product or if they’re paid to say it is?

Malaysia Blocks Steam Platform Due to “Fight of the Gods” Game

Here’s your interesting video game news of the week: the country of Malaysia has blocked Valve’s Steam digital store so people from the country will stop purchasing “Fight of the Gods,” a game focused on gods punching each other in the face and kicking each other’s asses.

Not familiar with the game? Well, you’re not the only one. Go check out bits of gameplay in the announcement trailer above. We’ve also outlined the game’s features below:

Your prayers have been answered! For the first time ever, gods, holy spirits and mythological characters from around the globe and throughout history will clash in an explosive 2D fighter where the entire world is at stake! Who will emerge victorious from the most destructive combat tournament the universe has ever witnessed?

Features

  • An unparalleled roster: Juggernauts from religion and mythology collide in battles filled with ancient magic and divine powers. Unleash the full might of Jesus, Buddha, Moses Zeus, Odin and many more in a struggle for existence itself!
  • Legendary stages: A tournament as epic as this could only take place in the most iconic environments ever seen. Trade punches atop Mount Olympus and call upon the heavens for otherworldly powers as you tussle in the Garden Of Eden.
  • Strategic combat: Immerse yourself in a four-button fighting system with tremendous depth. Counter each god’s unique attributes with throws, anti-air attacks and special moves.
  • Training mode: New to fighters? Hone your skills in the bespoke practice area to become the greatest god of the arena!
  • Pick who’s next!: Jump onto our Community Hub and tell us which gods we should include in future updates!

Here’s what British publisher PQube had to say regarding the matter (via Kotaku UK):

Most notably, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission have called for a ban on the game and asked for it to be disabled within 24 hours or face further actions.

We never received any communications from Malaysian officials here at PQube, however reports seem to indicate that Malaysia has now blocked access to all of Steam in order to prevent access to Fight of Gods.

Fight of Gods is a video game that takes a humorous approach to religion in the same way that other entertainment formats have – across television, film, books and theatre.

Developer Digital Crafter, who made Fight of Gods, also issued a statement as well.

The game is not promoting any religious agenda and is not designed to offend. The description of the game on the digital platforms through which it is distributed provide clear guidance on the nature of the game and its content so that people can freely choose whether or not to play it. We fully respect the choice of those who would not wish to play it.

We are disappointed that such freedom of choice is not given to everyone and in particular that the game has been forcibly removed from sale in Malaysia, although no direct communication has been received by us as to the reasons for this. Nevertheless we respect any rules and censorship imposed in any given territory.

Given how serious most countries in Asia are about religion, this shouldn’t really be a surprise to anyone. If you’re from Malaysia, what’s your take on this? Is the government overreacting or should games like these be geo-filtered?

NBA 2K18 Cover Player Kyrie Irving Featured in New Uniform

If you’re not an NBA nut like I am, then there’s a chance (or not given it’s pretty big news) that Cleveland Cavalier star Kyrie Irving has been traded to the Boston Celtics. Needless to say, this has caused quite an issue with the upcoming NBA 2K18 game, since, y’know, Kyrie is the NBA 2K18 cover player.

In past shots, he was donning his old wine and gold Cleveland Cavs uniform. That’s about to change now, though. Over on Twitter, the official NBA 2K account tweeted our first look at Kyrie wearing his Boston Celtics uniform.

There is a caveat however, since it’s also said that this will be “released at a later.” Cleveland fans, you might want to hold off on buying your physical copy of the game until then. Or maybe just get it and print out a new cover once it’s out? Thankfully, I’m fine with whatever cover so it’s not affecting me much.

Don’t forget, you can download the NBA 2K18 The Prelude demo now on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It features Trophies as well, which you can earn even in the demo.

NBA 2K18 will dribble out this coming week on September 15, for the PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Next Week’s PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Update Will Add New Weapon, Foggy Weather & More

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is set to receive a new update next week, which will add the Mini-14 rifle, foggy weather, and FPP leaderboards to the game. The patch will also fix “multiple bugs.”

Those who have downloaded the game’s test server will be able to access the content early next week. Then, after at least two days, the patch will go live on the full public build.

Here are the tweets confirming the new patch details:

In other PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds news, the partnership with Microsoft is going to allow Bluehole to use the same water tech that Sea of Thieves employs. This was revealed by Brendan Greene in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz.

“We can get that water tech, essentially for free, and we can share stuff with them … That’s just invaluable, because their water is great. Having that would really finish off our world nicely.”

Some cool stuff is coming to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds! Are you happy with the changes being made to the game?

PSA: How to Prevent Destiny 2 Bugged Quest, Bungie Support Is Aware

The Destiny 2 “Enhance” quest, which should bestow the player with the fan-favorite MIDA-Multi Tool weapon, is unfortunately bugged. Completing the mission will sometimes result in no reward being given, causing players to miss out on the Exotic scout rifle.

Bungie has acknowledged the problem, and has provided a workaround. (We assume a proper fix will be implemented later.)

Here’s what players need to do to ensure they get the MIDA-Multi Tool reward:

We are actively investigating an issue where Mida Mini-tool is not properly sent to Postmaster. When completing the “Enhance!” Quest, please ensure you have multiple inventory slots available in the Energy Weapons category to prevent this issue from occurring.

Basically, you need to make sure you aren’t hoarding a ridiculous number of weapons on your character. Our advice: Use the Vault to store items you aren’t using but want to keep, and dismantle everything else!

We hope this helps you avoid disappointment! Keep on grinding, Guardians!

Splatoon 2 Update 1.3.0 Sprays Out, Here’s All the New Tweaks

Nintendo has a new Splatoon 2 update out now, and it fixes a ton of issues for the Salmon Run, and weapons, and other multiplayer tweaks for Nintendo’s shooter.

Check out the full Splatoon 2 update 1.3.0 patch notes below.

Version 1.3.0

  • Changes to Salmon Run
    • Changes made to the Sting Ray and Splashdown specials for multiplayer also apply to their use in Salmon Run.
    • Bombs thrown by the Steelhead will no longer land on top of Flyfish or Scrappers.
    • Fixed an issue causing no damage to be dealt to Steel Eels hit with a Sting Ray if the Sting Ray’s shot inked any portion of the Steel Eel other than the pilot even slightly.
    • Fixed an issue preventing damage from being dealt to a Griller hit with a Sting Ray attempting to hit its weak point by shooting through it. Sting Rays that only hit the main body of a Griller will now also deal some damage.
    • Fixed an issue causing Steelheads that appeared in specific locations of the Lost Outpost stage not to attack.
    • Fixed an issue where two players attempting to pick up a single Golden Egg just prior to the end of a wave caused one of them to be unable to pick up any Golden Eggs during the following wave.
    • Fixed an issue where after playing Salmon Run online, players from your session who appeared in Inkopolis Square were always equipped with the Splattershot Jr.
    • Fixed an issue where players who disconnected just prior to starting a round of play would appear to be holding a Rainmaker-like weapon.
    • Fixed an issue causing the location of the arrow indicating the player’s character as well as their title to be incorrect on the result screen when other players disconnected just prior to the end of a round of play.
    • Fixed an issue causing players using Roller-type weapons to get a communications error after holding the inking button for an extended period.
  • Changes to Splatfest
    • Fixed an issue where during a Splatfest, all players you recently played with appeared in Inkopolis Square with a Splatfest Tee with no slots filled in, regardless of the actual status of their Splatfest Tee.
    • Experience points required to fill in slots on Splatfest Tees have been changed in the following ways:
      • Slot 1 – 4000 > 7500
      • Slot 2 – 8000 > 7500
      • Slot 3 – 12000 > 7500
      • Total – 24000 > 22500
  • Changes to Multiplayer
    • In Ranked Battle, regarding the special gauge increasing automatically based on mode-specific conditions, until now the special gauge would fill up regardless of the points required for the main weapon being used. Now, main weapons with a lower special gauge point requirement will have their gauges filled faster, and those with a higher point requirement will have their gauges filled more slowly.
    • Fixed an issue causing the area below where shots from a Sloshing Machine or Rainmaker hit a wall to not be inked.
    • Fixed an issue where players with the Inkbrush or Octobrush equipped occasionally dealt continuous damage to opponents when coming into contact with them on uninkable surfaces.
    • Fixed an issue causing Sponges touched by an Inkbrush or Octobrush to expand rapidly.
    • Fixed an issue where players with a Roller or Brella-type weapon equipped would temporarily be unable to recover from damage after coming into direct contact with an opponent and being knocked back.
    • Fixed an issue preventing players from damaging opponents via direct contact immediately after performing a vertical swing with a Roller-type weapon.
    • Ink splats will no longer appear on players submerged in ink when hit by a Sting Ray fired by one of their allies.
    • Fixed an issue causing shots from the Inkjet to occasionally disappear without exploding when hitting stage objects at certain angles.
    • Fixed an issue where players with active Ink Armor hit by the Splat Brella would react as though protected by the armor, but also as if they had taken damage.
    • Fixed an issue preventing ink from properly appearing on walls where the wall intersected with a grate.
    • Fixed an issue when using Spectator Mode in Private Battle that caused Squid Beakons to not be destroyed after being used.
    • Fixed an issue causing walls intersecting with grates to appear uninked when hit with the explosion from a Suction Bomb.
    • Fixed an issue causing players to clip into stage objects on Sturgeon Shipyard.
    • Specifications for some of the main weapons have been changed. Click here for details
    • Specifications for some of the special weapons have been changed. Click here for details
    • Specifications for some of the sub weapons have been changed. Click here for details
    • Points required to fill the special gauge for some weapons have been changed. Click here for details
  • Other Changes
    • When talking to Murch, a player’s current money and Super Sea Snails will now be displayed in the upper right portion of the screen.
    • Fixed an issue in Ranked Battle where teammates disconnecting while your Rank Meter was empty would mistakenly cause it to appear to be cracked.
    • Fixed an issue causing certain gear, such as the Splatfest Tee to be ranked incorrectly when sorting gear by “Most used”.
    • Fixed an issue where no damage was dealt when slowly rolling into the dummies when testing the Baller special.

Bluehole Wants Same Monthly Active Users as League of Legends

With the success of Bluehole’s PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) hitting an all-time high, the studio is aiming for the stars when it comes to how many people are playing the game. Just how high is Bluehole aiming for? Try League of Legends-levels high.

In an interview with GamesIndustry, PlayerUknown himself, Brendan Greene, was asked just how much room left does the game have left in terms of growing on PC.

Brendan Greene: Our sales curves are just going up. They’re not slowing down. I’m still waiting for that plateau, and it’s just not happening yet. When you ask about growth on PC, I just look at League of Legends. 100 million active users a month, I think, something stupid like that? If we play our cards right, maybe we can get to that level of users.

With PUBG set to hit the Xbox One soon, that could be a reality. Heck, given it just stomped on CS: GO and Dota 2, that might not even be needed.

Do you think PUBG will reach League of Legends’ monthly active users numbers? Or will the game be dead before that happens? Let us know what you think in the comments.

LawBreakers DLC Schedule for Q4 2017 Revealed, Addresses Low Player Count

Just a few days ago, Boss Key Productions teased the upcoming LawBreakers DLC schedule where it announced that new characters, maps and more will be added for free soon-ish. Now, in a post on the game’s official site, Boss Key has popped the lid and given us the LawBreakers DLC roadmap for Q4 2017!

There’s going to be new maps, new tutorial modes for new players, game tweaks and a ton more. Boss Key isn’t giving up on the game just yet, even if the player numbers on PC are continually sinking

BEGINNING IN SEPTEMBER

New Onboarding Experiences

We recognize that new players might be turned off due to a lack of knowledge on the ins and outs (and ups and downs) of the game. We are improving our new player onboarding experience with new tutorial gameplay features along with new tutorial videos. We believe these new changes will give players (both new and old) the knowledge they need to begin competing at a high level and to understand the nuances of the game and the classes.

Continued Game Improvements

LawBreakers is not a fire and forget title. It’s a game we crafted to run for years. But before we talk long term, we start by thinking small… this is why we are committed to continual, rapid fire updates to the game. This allows us to be responsive to issues brought up by the community and iterate on balance changes as is needed. Some games go months between updates and while that may work for them, it doesn’t work for LawBreakers. We’re going to continue to listen to your feedback and update the game rapidly, so keep sharing your thoughts with us.

New Map

The inaugural post-launch map release is Namsan, the first map set outside a post-shattering United States. It is currently in testing and is slated for release later this month.  As with everything map, mode, and class related in LawBreakers, all players who own the game will get this map for free.

Skirmishes

Our content update coming soon isn’t just about a new map, we’re also experimenting with entirely new modes. We call these Skirmishes, and each one is temporary. They’re all about playing the game different than you can in Quick Match, and to start things out we’re going to drop our Team Deathmatch Skirmish in a brand-new playspace. Yep, we’ve been listening.

New Map: Gateway -> Blitzball Goes Big Time!

We’re not going to say that we enjoy Blitzball so much that we made an entire arena for it, but we enjoy Blitzball so much we totally made an entire arena for it.

New Time-limited Skins

Oh, and be on the lookout for some special time-limited, Blitzball-themed weapon and character skins you can only get during this update.

Competitive Ranked Mode: Boss Leagues

This is the big one! You won’t want to miss what we have in the works for you in the coming months. The brand new Competitive features are coming and when they drop, you’ll have a chance to see how you match up to the best LawBreakers has to offer. We’ll have a bigger update closer to the release, but here’s the official Boss Leagues logo!

There’s a new class coming in later this year, and Boss Key offered a sneak peek at the character design.

The new map post-September will be Valhalla, and will be out later this year.

Finally, Boss Key has addressed the low player count for LawBreakers. Check out the studio’s plans to hike it up and how this content roadmap is tied to bringing it up.

PLAYER ENGAGEMENT

The big question everyone is asking is about CCU… we are all acutely aware of this and realize that it is an issue that not only impacts gameplay, but community morale. Depending on your region, we’ve seen how it takes some people longer than others to find a match, and we’re working around the clock to improve this by optimizing the game, adding lots of new content and onboarding to increase the number of players.

When we made LawBreakers, we did so with a long lifecycle in mind. We have planned and designed new features to bring new players into the action every month also to challenge and excite LawBreakers players. This dual pronged approach is actually a design philosophy that we will implement every post-launch update: make the game better for those who already have it, and to make the game more exciting and appealing for those who don’t.

In game terms, we believe this philosophy will bear more players short and long term, which should drive CCU increases with each improvement.

For example, the “Onboarding Experience” changes may seem like it’s designed only for new players… but we also wanted to create better tools for all players to improve in the game. If you want to try a new class, or if you want to understand how to better play against a class, we think these tools will help everyone.

Namsan is another great example of this philosophy at work… and one reason we’re really happy with our “Post Purchase, Maps, Modes, and Classes are Free” approach. We are really proud of the design and the lore of the new Namsan map; it’s made to fit in with the Zero-G world… but with a slight twist to expand the combat. We think that anyone who owns the game will have a great time playing it, and we’re hoping it excites some of the players who stopped playing for a bit, bringing us back to higher CCUs.

It’s also why we’re coupling the Skirmishes with this map update. We will always work to make sure the game offers tons of way to play. Adding different ways to play the game outside Quick Match with unique modes should help. LawBreakers was created as a high mobility, high reward game, but we know that sometimes you need a break between super intense matches. With this in mind, we are crafting unique modes that lets both rookie and veteran player experience the game in new ways.

That’s a lot of stuff planned for a supposedly dead game, no? Let’s hope players give it a chance and LawBreakers gets a second wind.

Star Wars Battlefront II Space Battles Won’t Have TDM Mode, Autoroll for Ships Can Be Toggled

At this year’s gamescom, DICE revealed our first look at Star Wars Battlefront II’s space battles mode called “Starfighter Assault.” While it was an impressive setpiece, some players might be looking forward to just getting into a ship and blasting enemies into pieces without worrying about objectives.

Unfortunately, that’s not happening — at least for launch anyway. Speaking to Metro UK, Criterion (who’s developing the vehicle-based segments of Battlefront II) GM Matt Webster confirmed that there won’t be any team deathmatch (TDM) or non-objective based modes in Battlefront II’s space battles.

Metro UK: So is there a deathmatch mode or other non-objective based options?

MW: No, Starfighter Assault is the one starfighter mode. But how starfighters and aerial vehicles handle is the same in Galactic Assault and other parts of the games. So they are transferable skills.

Another tidbit in the interview was how ships can “roll.” Battlefront II Designer John Stanley confirmed that there is an auto-roll toggle so players who aren’t that skilled can still do barrel-rolls and feel like a badass.

JS: In terms of the autoroll, we’ve got a choice there. So you can either have autoroll on or off.

Metro UK: Did I have it on?

MW: It was on, but because you were giving it a lot of input… there’s a timer on it, so if you don’t give it an input it will then roll you back. It’s quite short but you were giving so much input it didn’t need to do it.

For more on Battlefront II vehicle news, check out the Hero ship abilities here.

Star Wars Battlefront II flies out this November 17 on the PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Retribution Multiplayer Trailer Released

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is getting its fourth and final map pack called “Retribution” next week! Just to whet appetites, Activision has sent out a new COD: Infinite Warfare Retribution trailer out today.

Set to come out next week on September 12 on the PlayStation 4 and a month after on Xbox One and PC, Retribution will include four maps.

The maps are:
  • Carnage – A post-apocalyptic race track along the California coast, Carnage features long sightlines and environmental hazards including a fire trap players can activate on command to roast their enemies.

  • Heartland – In Heartland, teams will go head-to-head in a simulation of small town America that is a re-imagining of the classic Call of Duty: Ghosts map, Warhawk. Players can pop into the local ice cream shop for a treat, and then take out enemies down the street with a Black Hole Generator.

  • Altitude – Set in a high-end, sky high shopping mall located on the edges of the universe, Altitude pushes teams around a chaotic center where quick flank routes are key to victory. Additional features include floating lush waterfalls that border the map.

  • Depot 22 – Depot 22 is a watering hole at the end of civilization that focuses on mid-ranged encounters waged in a medium-sized, three-lane map. Players can battle in the cantina for close-quarter combat or engage with enemies wall-running off of a moving train.

There’s a new Zombies mode map which you can check out as well. The latest Infinite Warfare title update just came out yesterday, and you can read up on the tweaks here.

Ubisoft Aiming for 100 Operators for Rainbow Six Siege

While Ubisoft has just released Rainbow Six Siege’s Blood Orchid DLC that included three new characters, the studio (Ubisoft Montreal) isn’t stopping there. In an interview with PCGamer at gamescom, Brand Director Alexandre Remy mentioned that the studio is aiming for 100 Operators for Rainbow Six Siege.

Oh yeah, we are looking at developing the game with 100 Operators—I’ll let you do the math and work out how many years that does. There’s no reason for us to stop there.

Doing the math, if there’s eight new Rainbow Six Siege Operators per year, that’ll take Ubisoft Montreal another eight years to hit that target. It’s an admirable goal by Remy, but chances are, we’ll be knee-deep in the Rainbow Six Siege sequel by then, no? Of course, there’s the chance that this could come true — and if so, Ubisoft Montreal might not an award if they manage to hit it.

Ubisoft has previously said that their minimum number of Rainbow Six Siege Operators count was at 50.

Are you confident Ubisoft can hit that Operator number? Or should Ubisoft focus on game balance and other things aside from Operators?

Insidia Open Beta Now Available, Post-Apocalyptic Online PvP Battles Await You

The Insidia open beta is now available for PC players to download on Steam. If you’re unfamiliar with the game, it’s a post-apocalyptic turn-based strategy title. Download it here!

Here’s a trailer to give you an idea of what Insidia is all about:

And here’s the official description:

Each INSIDIA player fights to secure critical objects in order to destroy the enemy’s defenses and gain outright victory. A colorful roster of wild characters including fierce punks, mutated wizards and steampunk knights forms the core of a player’s fully customizable hand-picked team of champions, each with their own unique set of abilities and skills.

Champions are represented by three different abilities, Passive, Active and Ultimate. Passive abilities allow player characters to act automatically to events and scenarios in the ensuing battle. Active abilities allow the champions signature ability to be used every time a champion is activated. Ultimate abilities require an energy cost to be paid in order to be utilized, energy is a resource in INSIDIA that is passively generated each turn.

Dominating the map with carefully thought out moves and utilizing a champion with the right abilities are essential to become victorious. Once a base is vulnerable, a champion can sabotage it to achieve victory. INSIDIA will ultimately provide players with 12 different champions to choose from along with 36 different skins and now offers the initial 6 champions for its Open Beta launch with new characters unlocking every month.

The game is in “Early Access,” so expect some wobbly stability, and be sure to provide any feedback you have.

Fortnite Patch Now Live, Fixes “A Number of Critical Crash Issues” & Party Leader Problems

Fortnite patch 1.5.4 is now live on PS4 and PC. This was confirmed by the game’s official Twitter account.

Here’s the short, yet complete, list of Fortnite patch notes:

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a number of critical crash issues for players on PC/PS4 that should significantly enhance overall stability of the game.
  • Fixed an issue where a party leader would load into the zone while the rest of the party would be stuck in the lobby without a timer.

Below the patch notes on the game’s official forum, a lot of players are asking for other fixes. A common request is for “affliction damage over time” to be fixed, as apparently it doesn’t work at all!

If you were one of those players experiencing crashing issues, or problems with the party leader, I hope this brings you some relief. Play without fear, and go get yourself some epic loot!
