modernwarfare4.com Wants You to Play Battlefield 3

Do you remember when modernwarfare3.com was redirecting users to battlefield.com? Well, that story ended a couple of days ago in court with Activision winning the case. Now, the legal team at Activision has a new case on their hands.

modernwarfare4.com isn’t owned by Activision but the site takes slight digs at Activision by subtly promoting Battlefield 3. The whole site is just a FAQ page. When you visit the site, you will find these remarks from the owner. They answered whether Activision is trying to “assault” the site with “Yes, but we counte[re]d it with a squad of Battlefield 3 soldiers. They soon ran. I think you are confusing reality and gaming again.” It’s worth noting that the guys behind the site claim that they’re not seeking ransom from Activision, or as they put it “No. Personally, we don’t care – and want no money. We took this domain for opportunistic giggles.” They even claim that if the mega publisher “were” able to buy the domain from them, they would “ask [Activision] for a donation to a charity of my choice. Probably Help for Heroes – you know, those guys that don’t get the ability to respawn when the timer hits zero…”

They closed the statement by saying “Well, I’m buying Battlefield 3.. Fancy a game?

Update: DICE Clarifies Destruction in Battlefield 3

This article serves as an update to our earlier piece, Less Destructible Environments in Battlefield 3? DICE Explains

In this article, we looked at Karl-Magnus Troedsson’s interview with IGN where at one point, he talked about adding more indestructible cover in Battlefield 3. This was for many gameplay reasons, including making it easier for defenders in the Rush game mode.

For example, as many of you know, in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, some MCOM stations were inside destruction 2.0 houses which meant that these houses could be completely toppled, thus destroying the MCOM station inside. Some could argue that this was a “cheap” tactic used to destroy these stations, especially when someone could sit at their spawn in a tank with the optic vehicle perk and spam the house from great distances, leaving the defenders rather helpless.

As for the update, in a tweet yesterday, Alan kertz, aka @Demize99 mentioned that “[DICE] decided not to have crates in D2.0 buildings in BF3. But the buildings can still come down.” This seems like a fair decision which could ‘level’ the playing field (excuse the pun). This should also put many Battlefield fan’s worries of there not being any fully destructible buildings to rest.

BF3 – More Info on Recon Class and Last Stand/Man Down

Our man, Alan Kertz, aka Demize99, is just handing out Battlefield 3 info like candy! The only thing he’s not spilling, of course, is the beta date. So, we’ll just have to patiently wait for that day to come.

However, we do now have more info on the recon class and what the deal is with the revive/last stand/man down function.

As many of you know, the support class (as well as any class with a fully automatic weapon, like an assault rifle) now has the ability to “suppress” enemies. If he lays down a barrage of bullets near his enemy’s position, the receiver will now be at the disadvantage of having slightly blurred vision, and will have a harder time pulling off accurate shots. We learned today how this function affects snipers when one fan asked Mr. Kertz on Twitter if snipers still have to control their breathing while prone with a bipod. He simply replied, “Not if they are not suppressed.” Kertz later clarified that he indeed meant suppressed as in suppressed by a LMG, not suppressed as in silenced. So, to turn his statement into a positive sentence, snipers still need to hold their breath while in prone, with a bipod, if they are being suppressed.

Let’s talk more recon. Kertz clarified exactly how silencers affect sniper rifles. “Suppressed snipers have a lower muzzle velocity, giving them a larger bullet drop and lead. Same damage, tougher shots.” Kertz also shed some light on the the reasoning for why sniper rifles behave the way they do in Battlefield 3. He reminds us that “This isn’t BC2, this is BF3 and we’re sticking with the damage model for sniper rifles from BF2.” It is the true sequel to Battlefield 2 after all.

Worried that the revive function in Battlefield 3 is too similar to “last stand” in the Call of Duty series? Kertz assures us that “It’s nothing like Last Stand.” The reason for all the fuss is that it was revealed that ” ‘Man Down’ is post revive, before you accept the revive you come back with your sidearm, and after accept you’re back to norm.” This may sound oddly similar to “last stand”, at least during the moment before you accept a revive, but I think we can trust DICE to make sure this isn’t a game breaking feature.

Two other smaller, but fresh facts:

Kertz answered “Yes” to a fan asking whether or not a grenade will still explode if the player was killed the second after he threw it. When asked if being killed and revived still counts as a death, Kertz replied “As of yesterday, no. It’ll be in the final game but not the beta.” Something to keep in mind.

What are your thoughts on the sniper rifle damage models and the man down function? Write your thoughts in the comment section!

We hope you found this information useful! There is much more to come in the near future. Keep checking back to our Battlefield 3 page to keep up-to-date, and follow @MPFirst on Twitter!

XM25 Grenade Launcher Not Overpowered and No Headshots to Unlock Camos

Grenade launchers, aka noob tubes, in Modern Warfare 2 almost broke the game, and Infinity Ward is not going to let this happen again. And, even some would argue it broke the game for them.

Perks with a potential for misuse, such as One Man Army, are not coming back in Modern Warfare 3, but after fans saw the XM25 in action (see image above), they feared having to deal with another overpowered grenade launcher in MW3. However, don’t fret, Robert Bowling assures that “It [XM-25] is not very powerful, has to be aimed and programmed and then only explodes at that distance.” Here’s an image of the XM-25 being aimed and programmed.

(You can find MW3 gun lists at the bottom of the article.)

Click on the image to full size

If you’ve played the previous Modern Warfare games, you remember that you needed to get a certain number of headshots to progressively unlock different camos for your guns. This system in my opinion worked in terms of helping players hone their aiming skills, but it was kind of cumbersome to do that with ever weapon. In the next installment in the Modern Warfare franchise, “No, [MW3 won’t feature them, but instead] camos are unlocked normally by ranking up the weapon”  according to Robert Bowling, MW3’s Creative Strategist.

If you’re looking forward to Modern Warfare 3, you should probably take a look at:

Infinity Ward Defends Deathstreaks, But Asks You To Weigh In

Deathstreaks are a hot topic among Modern Warfare 3 fans, especially experienced players (check out the full list of deathstreaks here). Many were hoping that this new feature, introduced back in Modern Warfare 2, would be scrapped in the next instalment. Many of these fans have also been quite vocal about their feelings on the subject. They are making sure that they are heard among the developers at Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games.

When asked about the type of thinking that went behind the inclusion of deathstreaks, Glen Schofield, VP and Co-founder of Sledgehammer Games, answered, “So [gamers] have a chance of becoming better players. [Veteran players] have years of experience playing. New players need help.

One fan suggested that once a player reaches the highest rank in his first prestige, deathstreaks should no longer be available to him, since he should now be considered “experienced.” Robert Bowling, creative strategist at Infinity Ward, countered by saying, “Removing a feature from the game for more experienced players isn’t the answer. How about a Deathstreak-less playlist?

Hmm. Now there’s an idea!

Do you think this is fair? Should players have the option to choose a deathstreak-less playlist in Modern Warfare 3? Let us know in the comment section below. We will do our part in passing your thoughts on to Mr. Bowling.

Battlefield 3 for Xbox 360 and PS3 Visually on Par – DICE Clarifies

Finally, we can put this war over Battlefield 3’s console visuals to bed.

Misinformed fanboys from both camps have been spouting nonsense for the last couple of months about which version is superior. Now, when Daniel Matros, Battlefield 3 Community Manager Extraordinaire, was asked by fan on whether the two versions will be on the same visual level, he flat out states “Yes! Definitly. We [DICE] don’t back down on quality.”

So, there you have it folks. Both versions will look great, and for the love of Battlefield, let’s all get along.

Be sure to check out DICE’s statements on less destructible environments.

Less Destructible Environments in Battlefield 3? DICE Explains

Destruction has become a huge part of the Battlefield franchise. It was first introduced in Battlefield: Bad Company and has since then, become a staple part of the franchise. In an interview with IGN, Karl-Magnus Troedsson, General Manager at DICE, revealed that destruction was not originally intended to be a main part of the series. “When we threw in destruction, with having more dynamic environments in there, it actually worked out pretty well by itself.” He continued, “the destruction didn’t really rupture the whole Battlefield system. It actually was just a nice-add on…

Many fans would agree that it was a very welcome addition in Battlefield: Bad Company 1, which was later improved in Bad Company 2. However, it has introduced other un-anticipated problems along with it as well. For instance, “there were some maps that actually, after a while, if you played very long in the same area, you’d just grind down everything to the bottom, which made it really hard sometimes for, like, the defenders in a rush map,” said Troedsson himself. “When we see these things, [we think] okay, we have to add some covers that actually are not destructible.

In recent trailers and interviews, it’s been revealed that there won’t be as many completely destructible buildings like there were in Bad Company 2, however, destruction will still play a large role. Though you possibly may not be able to drop buildings on enemy’s heads in BF3, you will still be able to kill them with falling debris from destroyed walls or structures. Alan Kertz, senior gameplay designer at DICE, shed some more light on this subject when asked whether the player who caused the debris gets credit for the kill or not. He simply replied, “credit is given where credit is due.

If you played the multiplayer in the 2010 reboot of Medal of Honor, you will notice that DICE did not include any destruction at all. So far, we’ve seen a few things from MoH carry over into Battlefield 3 and now, perhaps, we will see less destructible environments as well.

Do you think this will better serve the gameplay? Let us know in the comment section below.

BF3 – New Voice Chat System and No More Mounted HMGs

More and more information on Battlefield 3 gameplay changes are slowly being trickled out as the beta approaches. Two changes that we have recently learned could potentially have a profound effect on the gameplay, and could hopefully provide for a much better Battlefield experience.

Alan Kertz, lead gameplay designer at DICE, commented on some changes made to the heavy machine guns in Battlefield. You’ll notice that in many of the latest trailers, you won’t find any stationary HMGs. Only TOW missile launchers and AA turrets. One fan specifically asked if there will, in fact, be stationary HMGs, much like in Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Kertz responded, “don’t need it. HMGs are mobile. Bipods are infinity level.” Basically, since the support class’ feature the ability to stabilize their light machine guns with a bipod on the ground or ledge, they pretty much act the same way stationary HMGs did in BFBC2, though you can move it to your position of choice. And remember, when a bipod is deployed, there is basically no recoil whatsoever, again, similar to BFBC2’s stationary HMGs. This also gives more importance to the support class since he is now the only one with the ability to suppress the enemy.

Many fans have been looking for improvements in the voice chat system since Battlefield: Bad Company 2. For those who don’t know, players were only able to speak to other players that were currently in their squad of four. Chatting among the entire team was impossible. This left much to be desired for many Battlefield fans. Thankfully, it seems this issue has been addressed. Kertz explained that, currently, “voice chat is by default all team. You can then pick channels.” This should hopefully lead to a much more organized and effective team-oriented gameplay experience.

Let us know what you think about these gameplay changes in the comment section below.

20 Million Unique Players Log On To Call of Duty Every Month

Gamers are finding it exceedingly difficult to invest in multiple games throughout the year due to financial constraints. As a result of that, gamers are directing their spending power to a limited number of games, or rather franchises. This phenomenon has, of course, hindered innovation in the gaming industry in terms of new IP. When a gamer has a gaming budget of, for example, $150 a year, they will more likely stick with franchises that they’re fimilar with. It’s getting harder for gamers to pull the trigger on buying a unknown quantity.

To further cement this trend, you can look at the number of unique players Call of Duty amass each month. According to Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activison Publishing, in a recent GI.biz interview, the number of Call of Duty players across the franshise is 20 million unique ones. Keep in mind that he didn’t reveal how this astronomical number was computed. And, with Modern Warfare 3 on the horizon, this number will surely go nowhere but up.

What are your purchasing habits? Do you stick with one or more franchises every year? Or, do you venture out and try new IPs? We are interested to hear you feedback which will help us direct our limited resources to covering what you want to read, besides Call of Duty and Battlefield.

Official Xbox Magazine Features 360 version of Battlefield 3

Finally! The Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 3 has seen the light of day! At least, sort of.

Official Xbox Magazine 77 hits the shelves today, Sunday, September 4th, and features 10 pages of the Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 3. It also pits it up against Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and will most likely speculate sales numbers and perhaps differences in gameplay design and philosophy.

We’ve seen battlefield 3 on the PC and the PS3, but the 360 version has been kept tightly under wraps up until now. Obviously, there’s no new footage here but perhaps we can get a glimpse at a couple screens and maybe learn a little bit more about how the Frostbite 2 engine is shaping up on the 360. How will it differ from the PS3 version, if there will even be much of difference at all? Hopefully our questions will be answered.

Could this be a foreshadowing of things to come? Could we soon see some Battlefield 3 gameplay footage on the 360?

BF3 Beta Concerns, Post-Launch Support, and Weapon Balance – DICE Talks Fan Feedback

Recently, we published an article detailing 7 awesome betas you should sign up for. In this article, we mentioned that there are two types of betas; ones that are used mainly as a promotional tool for developers, and ones that are actually used to test the game in it’s current state and purposed to acquire feedback from gamers for developers to work with before the final release date. Among these 7 listed betas, the Battlefield 3 beta is perhaps the most hyped and anticipated out of the bunch. DICE has yet to announce the exact date of the beta; however, we do know that it will be sometime in the middle, or perhaps later part of September.

With the beta so close to the actual release date of October 25th, many Battlefield fans are worried that it could fall into the first category of betas. Is DICE just using it to promote the game? How could DICE possible have enough time to sort through all the user feedback and apply it to the game in time for it’s release?

Thankfully, Alan Kertz, senior gameplay designer at DICE, put some of our worries to rest. In response to concerns of whether or not time restraints will be an issue, especially considering that copies still need to be printed, Kertz assured us, “[DICE] will support MP via updates. So things in the MP beta will be able to be corrected.” So, while feedback might not be addressed in time for launch, changes will eventually be made to the game post-launch.

Balance is a huge issue in first person shooters and betas are a great way for developers to work these details out. Kertz assured us that DICE was on top of this issue when another fan asked if weapon’s damage and recoil have been modified or tweaked since the alpha trial. Kertz responded, “substantially. Not a single gun is unchanged. And not a single gun in the beta will be the same at ship. Balance feedback!

So, I believe Battlefield fans can sleep well knowing that DICE is working hard to deliver a balanced game, and is indeed listening to our feedback. What concerns do you have, regarding the Battlefield 3 beta?

Could Digital Copies of MW3 Be Available On Day One?

During the pre-show to the multiplayer reveal ceremony at the Call of Duty XP event in Los Angeles, CA., Major Nelson made an interesting announcement.

He stated that the 6,000 fans attending the event will receive a code in their limited editions of Modern Warfare 3 that they can use to digitally download the game on Xbox Live the moment it is released on November 8th. None of these editions included the actual retail discs inside for obvious reasons (the game hasn’t gone gold yet).

The question we have is whether or not this digital copy is only available to attendees of CoD XP. Will the rest of the worldwide PS3 and Xbox Call of Duty fans also be able to download the game on day one as well? Or, will the rest of us have access to it on a later date, as with other CoD games that became available to download later? Speaking of which, many of these CoD titles have had a recent price drop on Xbox Live and PSN. Also, will traditional retailers try to put a block on this since they could lose substantial business? Activision could possibly make an extra $15 per copy if they were to sell them all digitally.

What do you think? Would you prefer to download MW3 the day it releases, or buy a hard copy?

Let us know in the comments below.

Killzone 3: Best Underplayed Shooter in 2011

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past couple of years then you know that Call of Duty and Battlefield are the supreme leaders within the first person shooter market, and with both Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 coming out later this year, the hype for both of these titles has reached astronomical levels, and for good reason too. Battlefield 3 looks to yet again raise the bar with its next-gen graphics engine, going by the name of Frosbite 2, and its amazing destructibility and realistic gun physics. Modern Warfare 3 is no slouch either when it comes to raising the bar as the title sets out to improve upon what is already the best selling formula for a first person shooter game of all time. With its addicting gameplay and compelling story, Modern Warfare 3 looks to be the best title in the series yet.

Now, with both of those titles looking absolutely stellar and people beginning to flock back to both Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to hone their skills and killing prowess in time for the release of Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3, I begin to become worried for what I think is possibly the most underplayed shooter this year. Killzone 3.

Killzone 3 released back in February of 2011 and with the hype surrounding the game due to its powerful graphics engine and the previous success of Killzone 2, the game went on to become the 14th fastest selling title in the UK (Yes, I know. I am British, please leave your jokes in the comments section if you wish.) This of course should translate into a good online community, should it not? Apparently not. A couple of days ago I decided to slide my Killzone 3 disc into my PS3 and decided it was time for an online bloodbath of epic proportions, but upon entering the online section of the game and then continuing on to search for a game, I was immediately thrown into a server which was barely even half full. I thought to myself, “Hey, no biggie, right? I will just find another game.” So, that is exactly what I did, I searched for another game and then, what’d you know? Another less than half full game. I don’t know what experiences with lobbys’ that all of you guys have had with the game in recent times, but I just can’t seem to find a full game. When I do, it is only because there is a huge clan of talented players who suddenly decided that I should become cannon fodder.

Now I know that there is still a good handful of players who decided to stick with this game, but I just can’t help but feel that many people who picked it up just decided to let the game collect dust on their shelves because it was something totally different to what they had played before. Unless of course you played Killzone 2, in which case I sound like an idiot right now. Anyway, back to the point. As I said, I believe people passed on the online experience after only a couple of hours because of how different it was to many other shooters out there. The control scheme is completely different, and it promotes a different style of play. Running ‘n’ gunning will get you killed, there is no aim assist, basically not friendly for causal players. The game seemed so bland and was a very tough mountain to climb for new players, heck, even I felt that way the first couple of hours with Killzone 3. I do admit that the game is hard to master. I mean, I was going 5-18 during my first matches, and I just could not seem to get the hang of the game. This is what I think turned many players off, the sheer amount of difficulty that comes with this game, it really does take a while to get a hang of. Of course, there are some elite FPS players out there who can just pick up any first person shooter game and instantly become a killionaire. For us regular folk, it just isn’t that easy.

However, after what would have been a good couple of days with the game, it finally clicked. Suddenly, I was going 20-8 in every other game and I was piling up killstreaks of 3 and 5. Luckily, the game just came to me, and I began playing like what I felt was a true champ at the game. Now the game became a lot more interesting, it became fun. I must admit, I was not experiencing any kind of fun with the game before this period. Because who would find getting a face full of lead by a cloaked sniper any kind of fun? This is also what I think turned players away from the game. It simply wasn’t any fun getting killed over and over again by the same snipers and same elite players. Why spend hours upon hours of your valuable gaming time trying to get good at a difficult game when you can just return to what you know and love? I do understand that the game, of course, has its faults, glitches, and bugs, which would also turn players off and tell the game to go hump a goat. But, I think that my previous comments are what ultimately caused Killzone 3’s online community to dwindle.

There is still a significant amount of gamers who play this game daily, and the DLC released for the game ended up selling quite well, but the player count is just no where near the numbers you see within the likes of Call of Duty or Battlefield (Halo on the 360). This is a shame because this game is truly one of the most fun games that I have played in recent months. The satisfaction that you gain from killing that damned cloaked sniper with his apparent “epic skills” or headshotting that guy who is pummeling your team into submission is just phenomenal. So, I urge you guys to, at least, give this game another go and not just throw it onto a shelf after a couple of hours of getting slaughtered because you still can not figure out the damned controls, which I admit are fairly sub par. Just hold out and keep playing, and I promise you that it will click. Before you know it, you’ll be gaining tons of kills and having a blast doing it. Killzone 3 may not be for everyone, but I have a feeling that a lot more people would enjoy this game if they were to give it a fair chance. This may not be the case for everyone, as some of you may just plainly hate the game and refuse to play it, which is fair. Why play something that you despise the very existence of, right? Happy gaming, guys!

Please let me know about your experiences with Killzone 3 in the comments. Why do you still play it? Or, why it is still M.I.A from your PS3?

Black Ops’ Unreleased Maps

Remember Cliffside from Call of Duty: World at War? It was a fan favorite among many CoD gamers. It was so popular, in fact, that it was re-made in Treyarch’s third map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops, ‘Annihilation’. Now, unlike Infinity Ward’s re-makes in their Modern Warfare 2 map packs, this map wasn’t just re-skinned with upgraded visuals, it was completely re-made. While the layout was kept in-tact, the setting changed from a Japanese cliffside along the Pacific, to a golf course resort. It was also renamed to ‘Hazard’. This went over well with the Call of Duty community since it provided the same thrills of the original map, yet kept things fresh by changing up the scenery. Surely, fans wouldn’t be disappointed if Treyarch were to release another remake of an old WaW map. Yet, it is exactly this that was teased during a panel discussion with members of the Treyarch team during the second day of Call of Duty XP.

Among many other topics, map creation was a large part of the subject matter discussed at the panel. It was stated that roughly %50 of the maps that Treyarch created never made it to the final version of Black Ops. One of these maps was, in fact, a re-make of World at War’s ‘Castle’. The newer, re-imagined version was named ‘War Museum’ and was set exactly where the title suggests: in a war museum. Sadly, Treyarch is now finished with any post-launch DLC, but how cool would it be to see this map make it into a future update to Black Ops?

Would you like to have seen this map make it into Black Ops? Or, do you have any other favorites that you would like to see re-imagined? Let us know in the comment section below.
