2019 is shaping up to be an incredible year for gaming technology. From NVIDIA’s ray tracing, to MMOs built entirely in VR, and artificial intelligence that can literally design entire levels, we’re living in amazing times for game development.
In this article, we’re going to highlight some examples of the most sophisticated technology being utilized in the gaming industry today and beyond.
Battlefield V
If you’re the proud owner of one of Nvidia’s RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti GPUs, Battlefield V is the first computer game to utilize the latest ray tracing technology introduced by these powerful cards.
Ray tracing is a rendering technique that attempts to emulate how light works in real life, by tracing the path of simulated light. Video games have always relied on “baked-in” lighting, which means lighting in games is technically a shader object – for example, a glowing candlelight will typically be a 3D candlestick mesh, and an invisible “light source” object with predetermined radius attached to the candlestick.
With ray tracing, millions of lights can be simulated in real-time, allowing for photo-realistic simulations of reflections, lights changing hue when bouncing off certain objects, and a lot more.
Online casino
The online casino industry is predicted to surpass $100b USD market value in the next few years, and it’s partially thanks to the technology powering online casinos in recent years. Virtual slot machines are looking more impressive than ever, with a growing number of titles showcasing next-gen 3D graphics, video game-like storylines, and even skill-based slot machines are becoming a thing.
Promethean AI
Promethean AI is the first artificial intelligence for helping game designers create entire scenes and levels, with minimal input necessary from the designer. The tool is semantically aware, meaning it listens to voice commands and acts on them. So for example, the developer can say “Create a bedroom”, and the AI will automatically create it.
Developers can then go further and issue commands such as “Add a desk with a lamp”, and the AI will correctly position those objects in the level, automatically calculating ideal positioning, shadow placement, and other nuances that developers would spend hours on.
Procedurally generated landscapes are nothing new, if you’re familiar with Minecraft, you know how game worlds can be automatically generated based on algorithms. But Promethean AI takes it a step further with machine learning technology, being able to imitate an artist’s style, and make its own suggestions on populating scenery.
OrbusVR
OrbusVR: Reborn is the first VR MMO to be released into the market following a successful Kickstarter campaign. It must be said that OrbusVR is not an AAA title, it is developed by a small indie team. The graphics aren’t amazing, though they are colorful. The gameplay doesn’t have the polish of titles like World of Warcraft, but as the first VR MMORPG to officially launch, it does set the bar for future VR MMORPGs.
The controls in OrbusVR take some adjustment, and many suggest remapping the controls to whatever you feel most comfortable with. But it cannot be denied that playing an MMO with real-time VR controls is pretty cool. Casting spells at mobs by waving your hands in the air, slashing your sword around, it’s all good stuff.
Overall, OrbusVR: Reborn is a preview of what VR holds for the MMORPG industry, and hopefully, AAA developers take notice.
Bless Online
This MMO from Asia had a rocky launch in the western market earlier this year, including server crashes and abysmal login queues. But the developers (Neowiz) have gotten a handle on most of the issues, and Bless Online has some unique technology behind it.
For starters, Bless Online was built using a modified Unreal Engine 3, and the creators worked with Epic Games to optimize UE3 for an open-world MMO. Oh, you read that correctly. Bless Online is an open-world MMO, which means you can freely travel anywhere, with no loading screens between areas.
Most MMO worlds are severely instanced, to reduce server load, enhance performance, and create a “theme park” experience that progressively shuttles players to higher level zones. Bless Online does away instances, being entirely open world and free to explore. And since they’ve gotten a handle on server lag and performance issues, they’ve proven an entirely open-world MMO can be done.

Shenmue 3 made a surprise appearance during the E3 PC Gaming Show presentation, with SEGA and Ys Net introducing a brand-new Shenmue 3 trailer for the long awaited sequel.
You can watch the trailer down below, although despite being a fan myself, I can admit that it certainly isn’t be best looking title out there. I will say though I’m excited for the title myself as it’ll finally give us the long awaited conclusion to the Shenmue story that we never got.
And in some not-so-pleasant news, with the arrival of the latest trailer being debuted at the sponsored Epic Game venue, Shenmue will be launching on PC as an Epic game xxclusive. Ys Net, the studio behind Shenmue 3 and consisting of veterans from the previous entries confirmed via their Kickstarter page that is is indeed a EPG exclusive and then provided a reason why.
We are happy to announce that Shenmue III for PC will be will be an Epic Games Store exclusive. Development for Shenmue III has been moving forward using Unreal Engine and the support we have received from Epic has been excellent. But most importantly, in looking for the most enjoyable experience on PC, it was decided together with Deep Silver after much discussion that the Epic Games Store would be the best distribution platform option.
Fans certainly aren’t happy with hundreds of new comments pouring in requesting for a refund. Shenmue III is launching on PlayStation 4 and PC on November 19 of this year.

Fans have been asking for it and it’s finally happening, Final Fantasy 8 Renaster is finally a thing, and is hitting current-gen consoles! Announced during Square Enix E3 press conference, the Final Fantasy 8 Remaster will be launching of this year. The game will support higher resolution (1080P, 4K) along with some other enhancements such as improved characters models and better frame-rate. Of course being an HD remaster it’ll also be receiving achievements and trophy support.
This is rather big news as it has been a big question mark for most people (including this author) that Square Enix seems to have been ignoring the title, and without reason. It’s been longed rumored or suggested that due to how Square Enix operated back in the days, there was no system in place to store source code for games, and as a result, Final Fantasy 8’s seems to have fallen through the cracks. This certainly would have made it really difficult as there would be no proper way of truly porting the game over from the original source.
Thankfully Square Enix has finally found a way to port it over. I gotta say, for me personally, this is one of the biggest E3 announcements I’m most excited for.
Final Fantasy 8 Remaster is set to launch on the Xbox One, PS4, and the Nintendo Switch on [date] . This surely will hold many over until the release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which will arrive March 3, 2020 on PS4.

Dreamhack Open Summer 2019
On the 14th of June, the DreamHack Summer 2019 tournament gets underway. If you don’t have the ability or time to get to Jönköping, Sweden, you can follow the action on Dreamhacks Counter-Strike channel on Twitch.
Who is Competing?
Group A:
Aristocracy
AVANGAR
Tricked
Winstrike
Group B:
Ancient
Chaos
OpTic
CR4ZY
So we have the two pools for the DreamHack Summer 2019 CS: GO Open. We know that Chaos has pulled the unlucky card of opening the 2019 Summer Open against OpTic Gaming. So far, the public consensus is leaning on an OpTic victory by 72.7 percent.
That said, the sportsbooks are not expecting a blowout as far as the odds are concerned. So far, the odds at Buff Bet are +120 for OpTic and +190 for Chaos. These are unusual odds placing positive money on both sides in a head-to-head match. Perhaps they are just trying to draw in some action on either side to get things rolling, but it screams of a big red flag to me. I would instead look towards a more trustworthy book, like those found in the link above.
That said, this could be a close match. OpTic has a definitive advantage on the Nuke map, but Chaos is about 10% better playing Dust2. Right now, Chaos is coming off of two back-to-back victories, while OpTic lost two straight then finally got a win again against Gamer Legion. <y prediction is Chaos wins this match as underdogs.
So in group B, that automatically means we will see Ancient facing CR4ZY. Now here we have a massive favorite. Ancient is -322 over CR4ZY who is +214. Ok, now these odds seem more in line with what we are used to seeing. The side that is clearly better than the other, thus, a less risky bet requires that you risk more money to profit. The other side, who are clearly dogs in the fight offer a much better return because they are more risky overall.
I have to say; I think CR4ZY has a chance to upset Ancient. Especially if they draw Nuke and Mirage as maps. Over the last 12 times they have played Nuke, they’ve had an astounding 83% victory rate, this going against just 62% on 8 tries for Ancient. CR4ZY has also racked up 15 Mirage matches recently at a 67% win rate. This is going against just 6 attempts at 50% for Ancient.
Another factor is huNter. He is the highest rated player out of these teams over the last three months. So, CR4ZY could be worth a few bucks. Even when you look at their head-to-heads, CR4ZY is ahead, four to three. -322 or having to risk $322 to win $100 on Ancient is a sucker bet. They are giving too much to the ‘home team.’
There you have it. Two Group B predictions for the opening match at the DreamHack Summer 2019.
