Large Companies Leveraging Video Games UK Tax Relief Policy to Avoid Paying Millions

The UK’s Video Games Tax Relief (VGTR), a policy aimed that boosting the video game industry in the region, is apparently being leveraged by large multinational video game companies to avoid paying millions in taxes in the UK, according to a report by The Guardian.

Some of the companies mentioned in the report include WarnerMedia, Sony, and Sega, which have claimed up to £60m, £30m, and £20m in tax breaks, respectively.

The policy, which was introduced in 2014, was meant to not only boost the video game industry in the region but also allow small to medium-sized businesses to stay afloat. But the reality is that most of the relief has been going to larger, multinational companies or larger video game projects instead of companies and video games project that have actual cultural value.

Those seeking to take advantage of the VGTR must also pass a “cultural test” to measure whether the company or game had any cultural value. But according to the report, the test is rather lenient and even fully fictional games are capable of passing.

Some of these companies include Sony, Sega and Warner Media who all claimed back 20% of certain production costs worth over £100 million. Unlike the taxes faced by other operators that can be found here, due to the bright future of the gaming industry, this relief is considered a way of helping UK video game companies grow faster.

While the information shared by the report might not be damning for the companies mentioned, it begs the question of whether the policy needs to be adjusted to allow more smaller to medium-sized businesses to get more relief.

Death Stranding Cinematic Trailer Delivers the Hype

We are almost a month away from the official release of Death Stranding, and to prepare for the major marketing push, PlayStation has released an all-new Death Stranding cinematic trailer that’ll play during commercial breaks.

The video below is entirely CGI, meaning none of it is actually in-game footage. It runs about a minute and is narrated by Norman Reedus, who plays the main protagonist Sam Porter. We do expect the actual TV spot to be a bit shorter than the one presented below, but either way it certainly looks gorgeous and should get people talking.

The trailers won’t stop here as we are expecting to see a launch trailer drop by Kojima himself real soon. This trailer will be edited by Kojima himself, and has been confirmed to be the final video to drop for Death Stranding before release.

Death Stranding is releasing exclusively for the PlayStation 4 on November 8. We’ll be sure to cover any related news leading up to the release along with a review sometimes after.

Ubisoft Removes Ghost Recon Breakpoint Microtransactions Connected to Skill Points and Boosters

Ubisoft has removed some Ghost Recon Breakpoint microtransactions from the in-game store that the company says were not intended to be available at launch. The move comes after redditor Blinkk8704, pointed out that the game featured microtransactions, called “Time-Savers,” that were bundles that included skill points, XP boosts, crafting materials, and more, that had a direct impact on the game.

The company addressed the complaints, that stemmed from the Reddit post, in a separate post on the Ubisoft forum. According to Ubisoft Community Manager UbiBorghal, the Time-Savers were meant to provide players who started playing later on after launch an optional way to catch up with their friends faster but were not meant to be available at launch.

“These items were designed as an optional way for players arriving later to the game (Post-Launch) to catch up with those who have been playing for longer and enjoy our co-op and challenging end-game experiences. These Time-Savers have since been removed from our Store for now.”

“Time-Savers were not designed to grant any advantage over players choosing not to use them. Additionally, Ghost War PVP has been carefully balanced to ensure that no matter your experience as a player, no one has a critical advantage based on their progression.”

UbiBorghal also explained the company’s philosophy regarding the game. “With Ghost Recon Breakpoint, we always aimed at offering a fair and rewarding experience to our players however they want to experience our game, in solo, co-op, PvE or PvP.”

“From the beginning, two key factors stood out as extremely important for the team.

  1. That Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint doesn’t include any pay-to-win elements.
  2. To make sure that players not choosing to engage with in-game purchases do not see their experience affected. Players will be able to unlock skills and get access to plenty of varied loot & items by simply playing the game.”

Whether the “Time-Savers” will be made available in the game again at a later date or if they will return in a different state or form is still unknown.

Marvel’s Avengers Power Levels Will Be Based on Armor Stats Confirmed by Leaked Screenshot, New Gameplay Info Revealed From NYCC

While Marvel’s Avengers can be played as a single-player game, a big chunk of it can be played as a multiplayer, co-op affair like Destiny or The Division. Speaking of which, we now have confirmation that the Avengers game power levels will be based on armor stats — just like the games mentioned above!

This was confirmed today thanks to the New York Comic-Con currently happening now. Over on Reddit, user AbusedPsyche shared an image confirming that the game was at the event, and one of these showed the game’s menu system for the characters, which shows us the armor Iron Man was wearing at the time, and the appropriate power level.

As you can see, the Night Fire Strike Gauntlets has the Gear Power Level of 26, which we assume will be part of your character’s power level, and can be increased depending on the gear that you equip (yes, like Destiny and games similar to it). You can even see what appears to be the character’s overall gear score on the upper left, which shows this Iron Man at 38.

The same Reddit user shared a few more gameplay info based on the trailer shown to Comic-Con attendees!

That’s the only photo I could get before they saw me. Feel free to ask questions but I’ll be at the con all day. I’ll tray to answer as soon as possible.

The trailer showed that AIM took over hero work after A Day and developed the (Synthoids?) to police the world. They showed some of them that I assume will be one of the main enemies in the game.

They also showed off what the skill tree looks like and briefly spoke of the single player vs multiplayer content. Progress for each character will move between both.

And yes there is a jump button for at least some characters. Didn’t remember to click it for all of them.

Here are more photos from the Con including a real-life statue of Captain America!

Hopefully, Square Enix will share this new trailer soon.

In other Marvel’s Avengers news, go check out this comparison vid showcasing the real-life MCU moves compared to the ones in the game. We also posted the character spotlight profiles that have been revealed, which you can check out here.

Borderlands 3 Update 1.03 Patch Notes – Gameplay & Vault Hunter Adjustments Listed

While Gearbox just released a Borderlands 3 update last week, the studio has once again rolled out a new one, and it’s full of gameplay fxies and more. Clocking in at just a measly 211MB on PS4, check out the full Borderlands 3 update 1.03 patch notes below.

Borderlands 3 update 1.03 patch notes:

First up are the patch notes:

STABILITY

  • Addressed a reported issue where an infinite loop could occur when hitting the Guardian Rank experience ceiling

GENERAL FIXES AND IMPROVEMENTS

  • The Hollow Point Guardian Rank skill no longer damages allies
  • Hollow Point Guardian Rank skill has been re-enabled
  • Addressed a reported issue where some players were unable to unlock the Ultimate Vault Hunter achievement on Xbox
  • Addressed a reported issue where mouse functionality may have been lost when hot joining a friend’s session on PC
  • Addressed a reported issue where some players’ inventory would not be saved in their bank

This week’s Borderlands 3 hotfixes, which will be live on all platforms by or before 3:00 PM PDT today, contain some player character balance changes and address some player reported concerns regarding enemy behavior.

Our goal is to make sure all three Action Skills for each Vault Hunter are viable, but we have noticed some skills have been outperforming others. To encourage more build diversity, we made some adjustments to FL4K and Moze this week.

We also looked at a few boss fights and made balance changes to make their combats more enjoyable. Finally, we went over some enemy behaviors that could have affected mission progression and adjusted some attacks to happen with more frequency.

VAULT HUNTER ADJUSTMENTS

FL4K

Rakk Attack! is great for constant damage output, especially when paired with Anointed gear. The base skill still seems to be lacking, so Rakk Attack! now has a guaranteed status effect on any enemy that it damages. Leave No Trace was returning much more ammo than intended, and we have added a re-trigger delay to keep its ammo return within expectation. Barbaric Yawp has an increased bonus, as we didn’t feel that the amount of investment had an equal payoff. In addition, we felt that FL4K’s pets were demanding too much attention, which was interfering with players trying to stand still for any length of time, so we disabled the ability for them to move you around.

  • Rakk Attack! status effect chance as been increased to 100%.
  • Leave No Trace now has a re-trigger delay of 2 seconds
  • Barbaric Yawp stat bonus increased by 100%
  • Pets no longer push around player characters
  • “Touch Pet” prompt is now a lower priority and should no longer interfere with looting or vending machines

Moze

Infinite Grenades is not an intentional build for Moze—even if it is hilarious. To lower the power (and spam) of this build, a re-trigger delay has been added to the grenade portion of Means of Destruction.

  • Means of Destruction now has a re-trigger delay of 2 seconds

MISCELLANEOUS CHANGES

  • Adjusted the balance of Gigamind, Katagawa Ball, and Billy the Anointed

These three boss fights had concerns with their health and shields that made their combat loops more difficult than we intended. Gigamind had a little too much health, so that was reduced slightly. Katagawa Ball will no longer regenerate its shields; we found that while players contended with the adds during the fight, it would unfairly regenerate its shield, negating the players’ progress. Finally, Billy had 25% of his health removed; we agree that this fight often dragged on needlessly. We will be monitoring each of these bosses and may make further adjustments in the future.

  • Bloated Rakks no longer spawn so many Rakklesnakes

This change should make the Cistern of Slaughter in particular much more fun.

  • Adjusted the cooldown values when they are displayed for Zane’s skills
  • Amara’s Glamour will now turn enemies on each other, as described in the Action Skill
  • Modified the loot spawn for Sera of Supremacy
  • Spiderant Emperors occasionally wouldn’t drill back out of the ground, which created a potential progression blocker in the Proving Ground of Survival; we have adjusted this and the issue has been addressed
  • Resolved an issue that could have prevented enemies from spawning while in Devil’s Razor
  • Lavender Crawly’s physics were adjusted to prevent them exiting the world like a popped balloon
  • Further safe guarded Apollo from being launched out of world as well
  • The Rampager will no longer enter an idle at state at inappropriate times
  • Saurian Slingers attacks were addressed
  • Guardians now use all their attacks in Playthrough 2
  • Guardian Wraiths now reliably use all their ranged attacks
  • NPCs in the Slaughter maps were reported to sometimes attempt to automatically revive players in the arena. Going forward they will no longer attempt to revive players
  • Minimized the glow effect when opening Eridian ammo chests, can more easily see the ammo inside when opened
Note that according to Gearbox, both a patch and hotfix are being deployed today no later than 3 p.m. PDT. In other Borderlands 3 news, if you’re expecting a DLC character to be part of the patches, you’ll be waiting for a long time.

India Is Fast Becoming the Latest Nation to Capitalize on the Online Gaming Craze

Almost anywhere in the world today you’ll see signs of the spread and growth of competitive online PC and console gaming. The central Asian nation of India has been slightly slower than some of it’s more progressive counterparts to get involved in the craze but is now starting to see the light – or should we say the ‘green’?

Computer gaming hardware and Internet connectivity have become more affordable and accessible in India over the past few years, opening up the online gaming industry to a much larger section of the country’s 1.3 billion citizens. This, combined with the growing ease of earning money simply from competing online, and you can see why online gaming is exploding in popularity in the country.

Global growth

However, it’s not just in India – all around the world, smaller countries are starting to join the PC gaming craze. This is largely due to its growing online presence in Youtube videos which often highlight the massive amounts of money that some players win. The social nature of multiplayer online gaming is another big drawing factor that appeals to older and younger players alike. In New Zealand, the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (IGEA) recently published a “Digital New Zealand 2020” survey, which found the average gamer age is 34 and the average time spent playing per day is 90 minutes.

Previously, most Kiwi gamers looking to make money online were casino gamblers or even slots players but now many are seeing the profits in competitive PC gaming. The report also shows that 72 percent of adult gamers in the country believe that the games industry benefits the overall economy, as it has seen a compound annual growth rate of 15% since 2013.

“In the early years, this longitudinal research helped overturn stereotypes of the average gamer, in recent years we have started to understand the deeper reasons why people play,” said Dr. Jeff Brand, a Bond University professor and lead author of the report.

Big money in gaming tournaments

Back in India, players can now take part in one of the largest gaming events in the world, Dreamhack. The massive multiplayer gaming tournament will be hosted at NSIC Exhibition Hall in New Delhi, which usually hosts large international trade shows. Prize money on offer at the event is 5.5 million Indian rupees – approximately $77,300 (US). And it’s not just for participants – even attendees of the event have the option to compete in smaller games and win prizes, with 175,000 rupees put aside for retro and tabletop games.

“India has a very strong gaming community, which we got to experience first hand during last year’s event,” said Dreamhack co-CEO Marcus Lindmark. “This makes DreamHack Delhi a natural next step in our effort in making the DreamHack experience the perfect culmination of the gaming year in India.”

Changes in the global gaming market

The recent 2019 Global Games Market Report, released by Newzoo in June this year, foresees consumer expenditure on games to grow to almost $200 billion by 2022. Currently, the total global gaming market is worth around $152 billion, with a 9.6% year-on-year growth rate.

A +13.9% growth in console sales in the US this year, combined with licensing and screen time restrictions in China, means the Asian superpower will fall behind the US as the world’s number one games market.

The report also forecasts a rise in mobile gaming, with the sector accounting for almost 50% of the entire gaming market by 2022. The PC gaming market share is expected to reduce slightly towards 2022, with the console gaming market expected to remain static.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Cross Progression Confirmed

While we’ve known for months now that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will offer crossplay (meaning PS4 gamers can play against PC and/or Xbox One, and vice-versa), we haven’t gotten official confirmation whether Modern Warfare cross progression will be available — at least, until today.

Reddit user LangersCS contacted Activision support, and he sent over his email reply which confirms Modern Warfare cross progression given how gamer progress will be saved on each player’s Activision ID, and not the cloud space you’re playing the game on.

Hey,

Correct, now your progress will be saved to your Activision ID and not your platform cloud. So, if you own Modern Warfare on Xbox and PC, you will keep your progression because it saved in your Activision account, that’s why it’s very important if you don’t change your Activision account as saves could be affected. But in other words, yes you do keep your progress, stats, weapons, etc….Less your achievements because that depends on the platform you play on so it may vary.

Well, there you have it. Honestly, I assumed that Activision would make a bigger deal of this if this was the case, but at least now we have official confirmation.

Speaking of confirmation, Infinity Ward has confirmed that they will share something regarding the Modern Warfare netcode before launch. Now, we just need confirmation that there won’t be weapons tucked away in Supply Drops, right? Then again, that doesn’t seem to be the case according to rumors.

Infinity Ward Wants to be “Transparent,” Will Share “Something” Regarding Modern Warfare Netcode

Just last week, it was reported (with evidence) that the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare netcode in the beta was worse than that of Black Ops 4. Given the findings, it’s understandable that players are a bit worried regarding the Modern Warfare netcode come launch on October 25.

Thankfully, Infinity Ward has confirmed that the studio will be sharing “something” regarding the Modern Warfare netcode before launch, to be “transparent.” This was mentioned by Infinity Ward Senior Community Manager Ashton Williams when answering someone on Reddit.

Hopefully it’s good news like how console players can see actual ping/connection meters during matches? Or maybe how the tick rates have been upped? Let’s just hope it’s good news, since the game has been embroiled in a little of controversy and it’s not even out yet.

What are you hoping to see hear/see regarding the Modern Warfare netcode? Are you concerned about it or not at all?
