Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition Review – Devil Hunting Delight

For some bizarre reason that I still don’t understand, I never played any of the seminal Capcom series growing up. Whether it be Street Fighter, Mega Man, or Resident Evil, my young mind was drawn to different franchises instead, mainly of the Nintendo variety. I’ve since been making up for the mistakes of my youth, diving into the Resident Evil franchise and quickly realising I had unwittingly let a brilliant series fall by the wayside. Devil May Cry is the latest series I’ve taken an interest in on my Capcom franchise voyage, with Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition launching alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. Does its hack and slash gameplay elicit joyment or frustration? Read on for our Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition review.

Demon Dilemma

Five years on from the events of Devil May Cry 4, Devil May Cry 5 is set in Red Grave City, the hometown of everyone’s favourite Devil Hunter Dante. An enormous demonic tree known as the Qliphoth has been erected in the city by the Demon King Urizen, who plans to use the unique power of the tree to take over the human world. Once fed enough human blood, the Qliphoth bears a singular fruit capable of giving the individual who devours it unimaginable power. Attempting to stop Urizen’s devilish scheme, Dante, Trish and Lady attempt to fight him, only to be swiftly defeated. Nero, a young devil hunter who lost his hand to Urizen witnesses the battle from the sidelines alongside V, a mysterious figure who appeared in Red Grave City only days prior to the birth of the Qliphoth. With Dante defeated and the hopes of defeating Urizen slim to none, the duo escape and eventually regroup to head back to the Qliphoth to retrieve Dante, destroy Urizen and save mankind from a demonic takeover.

When it comes to the narrative, it definitely feels catered for those who have played through prior entries in the franchise. There is a short history of DMC video available on the main menu that does a decent job of explaining the events of the prior games, however you will definitely benefit from knowing the characters prior to jumping in to this entry. Even though I hadn’t played any DMC titles, I still found the narrative particularly enjoyable. The plot exudes zany over the top anime silliness with its numerous twists and revelations, and the cast of main characters are all likeable and varied. Nero is a confident hot head that I can’t help but root for, while Dante’s laidback and carefree nature in the face of adversity makes him a character that is heavily entertaining. V with his quiet demeanour and motives shrouded in mystery made him a character I also loved, as I was always invested in the secrets he seemed to be hiding. The characters of DMC5 succeed in making the story an amusing one for both newcomers and veterans.

They also look absolutely gorgeous, as does the game overall, with the RE engine Capcom have been using since Resident Evil 7 proving to be a visual stunner yet again. Both characters and environments exhibit plenty of realistic detail, a fact that is only made more apparent in the special edition with the addition of ray tracing. Ray traced reflections and shadows can feature throughout your Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition playthrough if you so wish, with multiple graphical options at your disposal. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X 4K/30fps is possible with ray tracing enabled with 4K/60fps possible if you turn the raytracing off. If you want a 60fps experience with ray tracing you can do so by dropping the resolution to 1080p. Lastly there is a mode that offers up to 120fps in 4K. While it doesn’t always hover around its intended target and does drop a decent amount of frames throughout cutscenes, however it does offer up a surprisingly smooth and attractive experience that complements the frenetic gameplay. With four different performance modes to choose from, Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition affords players the luxury to tweak the graphics and framerate to their liking, even if the framerate isn’t as stable as it arguably should be at times. I for example prefer frame rate over graphics, so I played mainly in the 120fps mode while also testing out the 4K/60 FPS ray traced mode.

Stylish as Hell

Devil May Cry 5 is thankfully as great to play as it is to look at. You make your way through a linear level as Nero, V, Dante, or Vergil (Dante’s rival and brother is newly playable in the Special Edition!), hacking, slashing and shooting your way through the countless demons that were stupid enough to stand before you. Some hack and slash games fall victim to repetition and quickly begin to feel stale, but the differences in how each character plays alongside the combat that requires you to be as frenetic and stylish as possible results in an experience that never really feels boring.

Nero is the main protagonist throughout Devil May Cry 5 and is the first character you experience. He is probably the simplest to understand, with an easy to grasp style of play. He is equipped with an excellent blade known as the Red Queen, as well as the Blue Rose, his handy revolver. The Red Queen can be revved to allow for greater damage output using the combustion engine attached to it called the Exceed ability. Lastly, since he lost his arm at the start of the game, he can use a variety of different devil breaker arms in combat. They are expendable and eventually break, but they can pack a much needed punch. My favourite one is Mega Man’s Mega Buster because it allows you to emulate the Blue Bomber, charged shots and all.

Dante can be seen as comparable to Nero with the sword and gun combo, however he has far more weapons in his arsenal and an intimidating level of depth. He has swords, a powerful pair of gauntlets, his trusty pistols Ebony and Ivory, a motorbike he splits into two to do melee attacks with and somehow he still has more toys to play with, including the Devil Trigger that allows him to turn into an even more powerful demon form. The added depth with Dante alongside the variety of weapons appears in the form of styles. Dante can change styles with the tap of a directional button, granting him the ability to activate the swordmaster, gunslinger, trickster, or royal guard style. Swordmaster gives Dante an additional move with melee weapons, while Gunslinger boosts the efficacy of firearms. Trickster provides a buff to Dante’s mobility and the Royal Guard allows Dante to parry and return serve to demons with a powerful strike. Dante’s scary amount of depth and variety makes for a character that is fun to play but difficult to master.

Lastly of the original playable trio is V, a unique character who uses his demonic allies to battle instead of carving them up himself. Griffon serves as his ranged attack, while Shadow and Nightmare get up close and personal in combat, with Nightmare serving as a special ability spawn. Like V, Griffon and Shadow have health bars, which when depleted cause them to disappear for a period of time. Sticking close by with the duo reduces the likelihood of this happening, but when it does it can leave V in a spot of bother due to his miniscule damage output. Having Griffon and Shadow drop the enemies health to the point where they can be finished off by a few stabs on V’s trusty cane is the key to success. V’s distanced style of play makes him noticeably different in comparison to Nero and Dante, and while I think some may be perturbed by that, I actually found him really fun to play and by far the easiest to perform impressive S rank worthy attacks with.

Vergil joins the fight!

Vergil arrives in DMC5 SE as the newest playable character. With a play style that appears to sit between the newcomer friendly Nero and the depth heavy Dante, he uses Beowulf to perform hand to hand combat and his trusty Yamato to eviscerate the enemy. His special that can be triggered by spending his concentration gauge is pretty badass, but because of it’s spoilery nature I’ll leave it to you to see it when you’re ready with your own eyes. He simply slots in as a playable character into the story missions, which is fine, but it would have been nice to have had some new cutscenes that give him a bit more screen time.

Each character’s slew of weaponry will lay waste to the demonic foe, however in order to achieve a higher rank throughout each mission, you’ve got to be as creative and stylistic with your combos as possible. Chaining attacks and not getting hit by enemies is the best way to establish a combo, but creatively sifting through and utilising each weapon throughout the combo is your best way to ensure your B ranks turn into S ranks at the conclusion of a mission.

Further aiding your quest for stylish combos and higher scores are the myriad of upgrades that can be purchased throughout the game using Red Orbs collected throughout missions. From upgrades to your health to upgrades to your moveset, there is plenty to spend your collection of orbs on. When you aren’t fighting demons, you will be exploring levels collecting these handy orbs, alongside various other different colored orbs. Green ones refuel your health bar, while blue orbs when collected extend your health bar. Purple orbs level up your Devil Trigger gauge which can be handy for extending your powerful demon attacks, while white orbs found in levels will replenish it. Lastly are the gold orbs that allow you to revive yourself when your vitality gauge is depleted and you are downed. While they aren’t too handy in the easier modes, they are a handy item to have in harder modes, such as the new Legendary Dark Night mode that features far more enemies than any other mode. Speaking of new modes, Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition features a Turbo mode that sees the game played at 1.2x speed, leading to an even more intense affair. It doesn’t feel too much different to me, but quicker means better, right?

Jackpot!

At the end of the day, Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition is a brilliant game. It takes the addictive, intense and stylish hack and slash gameplay of the original 2019 Devil May Cry 5 release, all in the while making some welcome additions to the highly revered title, such as greater performance options, new gameplay modes and a new playable character. It’s story is anime as hell in all the right ways, the soundtrack is littered with absolute bangers, and the impressive visual aesthetic is a beauty to behold. Whether you’re new to the Devil May Cry series like myself or have been invested in the franchise for years, Devil May Cry V Special Edition serves as a game worthy of your time.

SCORE: 8.5/10

PROS:

  • Silly anime story
  • Addictive gameplay
  • Performance options

CONS:

  • Addition of Vergil could have used cutscenes
  • Frame rates aren’t as stable as they should be

For Honor Update 2.24 December 10 Drops Y4S4 Mayhem

For Honor just got the big Year 4 Season 4 (Y4S4) Mayhem update! For Honor players will see this as the For Honor update 2.24 December 10 patch, and this brings a new hero into the fold, next-gen support, and loads more.

For Honor Update 2.24 December 10 Patch Notes:

PATCH NOTES 2.24.0 – FOR HONOR

PS4: 1.9Gb, Xbox One: 2.1Gb, PC: 2.1Gb

NEW HERO — GRYPHON

  • A well-known veteran returns to unite the Alliance against the Horkos. The one who is now known as ‘Gryphon’ has traveled far and wide, learned fighting techniques from warriors across all of Heathmoor and added his own deadly twist to them. Wielding the bardiche, this charismatic leader excels in all situations and keeps his allies alive to fight another day.
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Support/Healer
  • Good Melee Range

Special Capabilities

  • Strong Mix-Up in the Chain Finishers
  • Many Maneuvers and Attacks shortcut to the Chain Finisher Mix-Up
  • Many Team-Healing Support Feats

REVENGE

  • We have further improved the Revenge User Interface to display more information: The Revenge gauge around enemies’ emblems will now blink if your next attack will increase their Revenge
  • We have removed the old Revenge Gauge in the bottom left screen as the information there was a duplicate of the gauge around players’ emblems

Developer’s comment: The original intention behind the recent Revenge changes was to allow players to make better decisions during group fights. Showing the Revenge gauge was a first step, and we’re now displaying more granular information by indicating whether or not an attack will feed revenge to ensure players can adjust their course of actions accordingly.

  • We have replaced the “Revenge Attack” Feat with “Executioner’s Respite”. “Executioner’s Respite” increases heals of executions by 50% of their base value

Developer’s comment: Now that the Revenge status is visible by everyone, having a Feat that lets the owner alter their Revenge state by themselves made it look inconsistent and confusing. and it defeated the purpose of giving better information on players’ status. We’ve replaced the feat with a whole new effect for any Hero that uses it, which we hope will be useful to all of them.

  • We have updated the “Righteous Deflection” Feat to ensure it no longer affects Revenge gains but the other effects of the Feat remain unchanged

Developer’s comment: For the same reason we have changed the “Revenge Attack” Feat, we made sure players cannot affect their Revenge status by themselves anymore with “Righteous Deflection”.

NEXT GEN SUPPORT

Additionally to the graphical improvements that were available since the launch of the PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Serie S, we are happy to introduce a 60 Frame Rate per Second on those consoles, so to recap:

Developer’s comment: Bounty Hunter is already considered a 1st pick for all Heroes that carry it for its very high payoff, passive status with no cooldown and easy conditions to fulfill. Coupled with the Devourer Perk and now Executioner’s Respite, we decided to lower its healing values to something we feel is more in line with the power level of a Tier 1 Feat.

MAP

Beachhead

  • Removed spikes from Capture Zone A
  • Attackers now have a secondary entrance in to Capture Zone C via a new sloped path, that veers right and leads through a broken wall that then connects to the zone
  • Added a new bridge connection between Capture Zone C and the ramparts on the opposite side, which were previously not part of the playing area. The bridge overlooks the Mid Lane
  • Attackers can now access the left-hand side of the ramparts via a ladder
  • Added stairs that connect Mid Lane to Capture Zone C, removing the one way drops onto Mid Lane throughout the area
  • Reworked Ashfeld lighting environment to make it brighter

Beachhead Duel

  • Moved one of the duel arenas from the Ramparts (Capture Zone C) to the Defender Stronghold

Beachhead Brawl

  • Removed props and fires and centered Player spawn points at Mid Lane

Developer’s comment: Beachhead was in much need for some drastic changes for some time. Attackers had too few options when it came to navigating towards both Capture Zone areas. The newly added slopes, stairs and ladders will now allow Attackers (as well as Defenders) to easily get to wherever they need to go. Another issue in the map was that Mid-Lane was subjected to too many drop attack opportunities throughout its entire length due to the one-way drops. With the new stairs and bridge we keep the navigational options while removing the frustration of getting drop-attacked too often. Finally, the spikes at Capture Zone A were a major point of frustration and were too gratuitous in their position. We strongly believe this change makes the area much healthier as an integral fighting space.

Hyper Scape Update 1.24 December 10 Rolled Out for v2.5 & Crossplay

Hyper Scape fans, the day you’ve been waiting for is here! Crossplay has come to Ubisoft’s free-to-play battle royale (at least in semi-beta mode). Ubisoft has today deployed the Hyper Scape update 1.24 December 10 patch, or what the studio calls v2.5!

Hyper Scape Update 1.24 December 10 Patch Notes (v2.5):

NEW FEATURES

CROSSPLAY (SOFT LAUNCH)

Patch 2.5 finally introduces the long-awaited crossplay feature! Crossplay will enable you to play online with friends and players over different gaming systems.

For this first iteration we will offer full crossplay between consoles, and by-invite for PC. On console, if crossplay is enabled you will be able to play freely together between Xbox and PlayStation. PC players will also be able to invite their friends on console and play with them directly, however their party will be matched into the PC queue.

Crossplay additions: – Added crossplay option in Settings -> Account, set to ON by default – Can be disabled in-game on PS4 – Can be disabled in system settings on Xbox (Xbox Live Privacy Policy) – Cannot be disabled on PC

  • Added crossplay option to initial flow for new players
  • Added new Social menu
    • “Friends List” displays all friends from Ubisoft Connect and your current platform
    • Allows you to invite friends from any platform to play together
    • Shows pending Game Invites from friends
    • “Block List” displays players you have blocked all communications from
    • “Recent Players” list shows all players from your current and previous match
  • New contextual player options added in Squad Menu and Social menu
    • The following options were added: Add Friend, Invite to Game, View Platform Profile and Block Player
  • Player Platform icons are now shown next to Contender names to help identify who is on your platform, any console, or PC for matchmaking
  • Xbox players will be able to see who has an Xbox account linked to their Ubisoft Connect account, and view their Xbox Live profile

*Important: PC joining the full crossplay pool will be coming later, once an acceptable gameplay balance solution is found. This is the first step in our effort to decrease lobby waiting time and improve the number of players in matches. Stay tuned for more official communications on future crossplay news! *

WINTER FESTIVAL

Winter is coming to Neo Arcadia in December! Between December 15-29, you will be able to enjoy the Winter Festival event, the snowy Neo Arcadia, its magical outfits and items in the Shop.

ARCADIUM IMPROVEMENTS

This time we’re adding “Navigation Pick-Ups” all around Neo Arcadia to help you practice your navigational skills, with or without hacks. Some of them are easier to obtain than others so see if you can reach them all!

Item pick-ups have no effect, this is for training purpose.

Item pick-ups have been placed at the following locations:

  • Outside of the Throne Hall (Easy)
  • North West of the M.O.N.A. Landmark (Easy)
  • North T-LOOP Building (Medium)
  • The Line (Hard)

As a reminder, to access Arcadium you can go to the Play portal’s Train tab. To exit, simply open the menu and quit to the Hyper Scape HUB.

SYSTEMS

IMPROVED MAMMOTH FEEDBACK

We’ve added feedback under the Mammoth Mark I reticle to show how many pellets have hit the target. The reticle will now display Normal hits in white and Critical hits in red.

IMPROVED HEALTH BAR

The enemy health bar has been reworked to make it more readable during combat: – Better & faster health loss animation when hitting a target. – Removed the health chunk divisions to make the bar easier to read. – New color.

IMPROVED COMBAT AUDIO FEEDBACK

A series of audio improvements have been made to the core combat feedback: – Improved Critical hit sound. – Improved Normal hit sound. – Improved player & team elimination confirmation sounds.

IMPROVED SQUADMATE VISIBILITY

To make squadmates easier to spot we’ve added a color filling that matches the color of their squad widget and outline: • The color filling will appear when a squadmate is 20m away from you and will then gradually increase as the squadmate gets further. • This filling, like the outline, is not occluded and thus helps to identify your allies’ current position, even if you are separated by several buildings.

IMPROVED MARKETPLACE LAYOUT

The Marketplace’s visual layout was improved to simplify navigation in a single tab and have quick access to all offers. Players will see everything listed below in one single tab: – Daily Gift – Daily Offers – Weekly offers – Battle Pass offers – Currency offers

We’ve regrouped advanced controller curve settings inside a new sub-menu to simplify the settings menu and prevent manipulation errors. The following settings will be found in that sub-menu: – Extra Speed (Horizontal / Vertical) – Extra Speed Delay – Extra Speed Time – Controller Dead Zones – Controller Outer Threshold – Aim Assist

  • We’ve added a specific screen in the Hyper Scape HUB to improve the visibility of the Starter Pack.
  • You will now be able to see and explore in the 3D preview the items that you may own if you purchase the pack.

DAILY GIFT END OF MATCH NOTIFICATION

  • At the end of a match, if a player hasn’t redeemed their Daily Gift yet, a notification will now be shown to remind players to go back to the Marketplace and claim the gift.

BUNDLE IMPROVEMENTS

  • Added the “Equip” button after purchasing a bundle. You will now be able to equip the items of a bundle directly after purchase.

BUG FIXES

GAME MODES

  • In Arcadium, fixed an issue where eliminating a drone did not show the drone’s name in the kill feed.
  • Refer to the Team Deathmatch section above for numerous fixes in that mode.

WEAPONS

  • Fixed an issue where holding the shoot button with the Skybreaker would prevent the player from reloading the weapon or shooting again.

SYSTEMS

  • Fixed an issue where some in-game news would be duplicated for players who play Hyper Scape on multiple platforms.
  • For controllers, fixed an issue where turning the Auto-sprint setting on and moving to the front left or right would cause the screen and the character’s hands to shake violently.
  • For controllers, fixed an issue where turning to the left would make the character turn a lot slower than they do if they turn to the right.
  • On PC, fixed an issue where the game’s interface would display abnormally after a player clicked the “Find Another Match” option and switched to another screen while waiting in the Lobby.
  • On PC, fixed an issue where switching from Full screen mode with a non native resolution to Borderless mode would cause massive FPS drops.

CROWNCAST

  • Fixed an issue where the Leaderboard did not show the elimination leader while watching a Team Deathmatch match.

Double Dragon Neon Makes its Way to Nintendo Switch on December 21

Looks like a retro modern classic beat ’em up from the PS3 and Xbox 360 days is finally getting the long awaited modern port release it deserves, as WayForward Technologies and Majesco Entertainment have announced that they’re bringing Double Dragon Neon to the Nintendo Switch — and it will be out a few days just before Christmas!

Here’s the trailer announcement for the action packed tribute to everything Double Dragon and the 80’s!

Originally released in September 12, 2012 for the PS3 and Xbox 360 as an online only digital release in each system’s stores, Double Dragon Neon was a western fueled reimagining of the Double Dragon franchise — with players once again taking control of brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee as they brawled through heaven and hell to rescue Marian from the Shadow Warriors gang. The game also introduced a new villain in the form of Skullmageddon — an obvious nod to the Masters of the Universe villain Skeletor and a super-lich who appears now and then in the game to antagonize the brothers. Double Dragon Neon would also get a port for PC via Steam, and one of the highlights of the game would be its unique 80’s induced soundtrack that combined pop and synth with new wave and metal.

Be sure to check out more updates and news right here on MP1st.

Double Dragon Neon will be available for the Nintendo Switch starting December 21.
