Battlefield 4 Gets Huge Fall Update, Read The Patch Notes

Alongside the launch of the long-awaited Community Operations project, Battlefield 4’s major Fall Update is has arrived, introducing a mountain of changes and improvements to DICE LA’s shooter.

“The main focus for this update has been the finalization of the Community Map Project, resulting in the
map ‘Operation Outbreak’ which we built openly on the Community Test Environment,” the studio wrote in a recent blog update.

“This release also includes a pretty extensive vehicle balance pass, which prompted us to change the
format of the patch notes list in order to explain our changes better – we hope you like this new and
more detailed version!”

The full 30-page document (yes, 30 pages) can be viewed at this link, though here is a brief summary of what the update accomplishes when it comes to vehicles.

  • Ground vehicles: Improve mobility and countermeasures to make vehicles more powerful overall
  • Air vehicles: Add below radar support, improve counter measures and overhaul AA-missile
balance for a more dynamic setup
  • Vehicle weapons: Re-balance vehicle weapons to give a more meaningful spectrum of choices
between competing options per vehicle. All weapons should have a good use case and niche
    now.
  • Mobile Anti Air: Reduce effective range of MAA so it has to advance into the fray a bit more, while
still maintaining its role as the counter to aircraft

Be sure to read the full document, as there are also some important changes made to teamplay and objective play as well as a number of improvements to netcode.

Destiny Celebrates Halloween With 2 Week-Long ‘Festival Of The Lost,’ New MP Map Added To Crucible Rotation

This week and next, Guardians are celebrating Halloween, Destiny-style, with limited-time quests and activities that yield spooky rewards.

Between now and November 9, visiting Eva Levante in newly re-decorated Tower will kick off a Halloween-inspired quest line that includes a wide variety of simple tasks. Completing these will earn you new masks that can be upgraded to Legendary status, meaning they can be kept in your inventory permanently after the festival has ended.

MYiC0n44tYVFBjXbNQRrEoAVKBwaOxiEECyDU3Qn0ggss40zMYLuclSAsQeqUiEt8gMDYAjodUVUwWPypQB6kgRSQohOkwUwUpB8FBAA7

Quests will also drop new trick-or-treat consumables that offer specific buffs, providing you with more glimmer or an increased upgrade rate for certain weapon classes. New emotes, including a dance based on the famous choreography for Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller,’ can also be picked up from Tess Everis for an offering of Silver.

Lastly, Bungie has added a brand new PvP map to the Crucible rotation called the Cathedral of Dusk. Here’s the set-up:

“Lord Shaxx’s Redjacks have entered the Dreadnaught, clearing a path to the area known as the Cathedral of Dusk.

“The Warlocks believe this vile site was a tomb, a place Oryx never thought the Light would touch. But now the Light is here, and Shaxx has claimed the Cathedral of Dusk as a new space to prepare for war.”

If you’re interested in creating your very own real life Destiny mask for this weekend, be sure to check out the festival’s official website for PDF templates.

It’s all a nice gesture from Bungie, so definitely log in and check out the festival when you get the chance. Hopefully we’ll be treated so something similar this holiday.

Battlefield 4’s ‘Community Operations’ DLC & Fall Update Dated For Launch This Tuesday

Battlefield 4’s Community Operations DLC, which has been some time in the making, is finally getting a proper launch tonight, DICE LA has announced.

The free DLC will launch alongside Battlefield 4’s upcoming Fall Update, a separate download, on Tuesday, October 27 on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Marketplace, and Origin. Of course, a full version of Battlefield 4 is required to play it.

Development on the new map, titled Operation Outbreak, has been guided by members of the Community Test Environment since day one, including the layout, setting, and overall experience. If you missed it, this experty-crafted gameplay trailer that launched just a few days ago provides an excellent presentation of the overall feel of the new map. Definitely give it a watch.

With Battlefield 4’s Night Operations and Community Operations initiatives now in the bag, all that leaves is the Classic Map Project, which was recently back in the CTE for more testing. Keep your sights on MP1st for updates!

Check Out Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s Official “The Giant” Zombies Gameplay Trailer

Check out some brand new gameplay from Call of Duty: Black Ops 3‘s “The Giant” zombies map.

The new trailer celebrates the return of everyone’s favorite zombie-slayers, Dempsey, Nikolai, Richtofen, and Takeo, as they do what they do best on a map inspired by the original “Der Riese” from Call of Duty: World at War. Once again, players will make use of the Pack-a-Punch Machine and Teleporters while fending off those pesky Hellhounds.

As we learned last night, “The Giant” will be included not only the various Collector’s Editions, but also in the game’s Season Pass, which will only be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 launches November 6.

Destiny – Trials Of Osiris Returns End Of October, Bungie Plans More Improvements For November Update

That’s right. Trials of Osiris, Destiny’s major end-game PvP content that comes around once every week, is *actually* coming back this October 30 after a bit of a delay caused by a nasty game-breaking bug last time.

The first Iron Banner of Year Two concluded last week, and although Bungie has yet to announce when it will return, the studio has outlined a few ways it will improve next time around. For one, a bug that “affected how Legendary drops happen throughout the Crucible, including Iron Banner,” will be squashed, Design Lead Lars Bakken explained in the latest Weekly Update.

“We’re working hard to ensure that the next Iron Banner will work as intended, and be even better than before,” he added. “These changes will make your entire Crucible career more rewarding. Once the final details are locked, we’ll be sure to share them with you.”

These changes and more will arrive in Update 2.0.2, which Bungie says will deploy before American Thanksgiving (November 26), if all goes well.

Up next for Guardians is the launch of King’s Fall Hard Mode Raid, which just went live as of 10AM PST this morning. The latest Weekly Update did little to reveal what’s in store, Lead Designer Gavin Irby says Hard Mode will upset the rhythm you settled on in Normal Mode and is “going to give you one more plate to spin, and make you think on your feet.”

New Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Trailer Teases NUK3TOWN Gameplay

A new Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 teaser from GameStop reveals a first look at the game’s celebrity map, NUK3TOWN.

The trailer, above, teases only about four seconds worth of gameplay, but it’s enough to get a rough idea of the popular map’s new look for Treyarch’s upcoming Call of Duty title.

The studio revealed last August that the map, which appeared in both Black Ops and Black Ops 2, would make a return once more as a pre-order bonus on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. According to the announcement, Black Ops 3 version “has been re-designed from the ground up to highlight Treyarch’s new momentum-based, chained-movement system…” giving player a “fresh take on this classic run-and-gun, close-quarters multiplayer map.”

You’ll be able to take it for a spin yourself on November 6.

Black Ops 3’s Season Pass For Current-Gen Only, Includes Re-Imagined World at War & Black Ops Maps

A description for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3‘s Season Pass has been updated on the Xbox One store to include more specifics on its contents.

According to the page, the game’s Season Pass will deliver “4 epic DLC map packs in 2016 with all-new multiplayer content, including re-imagined fan-favorite maps from Call of Duty: World at War and the Call of Duty: Black Ops series, plus thrilling Treyarch Zombies content, all for one great price.” That includes “The Giant,” a throwback zombies map based on the original “Der Riese” with returning characters Dempsey, Nikolai, Richtofen, and Takeo. The pass says that holders will be “among the first to experience [it].”

Additional details reveal that the pass won’t be available on Xbox 360, which will almost assuredly be the case on PlayStation 3 as well.

The Season Pass isn’t the only thing excluded from previous-generation versions of Black Ops 3. Last month, we learned that the co-op campaign would also be cut and that the game would only ship with multiplayer and zombies modes on older consoles.

Earlier this week, reports also surfaced that Black Ops 3’s Xbox 360 and PS3 developers, Beenox and Mercenary Technology, were “looking more at something like 30FPS” for the game’s frame rate and likely won’t be able to deliver the staple 60FPS gameplay the series is known for.

On a lighter note, what older World at War or Black Ops maps do you think are worthy of the Black Ops 3 remake treatment? Any favorites?

Call of Duty Devs Targeting 30FPS For Black Ops 3 On Xbox 360 & PS3

This Fall, Call of Duty is still launching on older-generation consoles, but its signature 60FPS gameplay isn’t, according to new reports.

While Treyarch may be pushing the boundaries of what defines a Call of Duty game on current hardware with stunning graphics and great performance, Black Ops 3’s Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 developers, Beenox and Mercenary Technology, admit they won’t be able to deliver the same experience.

“We’re basically looking more at something like 30FPS,” Beenox creative director Thomas Wilson told Develop. “But still, the experience is very enjoyable, otherwise it’s not Call of Duty.”

We’re kind of shocked, but maybe we shouldn’t be. As Wilson explains, targeting 6oFPS “becomes harder when you’re working on current gen platforms.” Meaning, as the game’s primary developer pushes technology further and further on more powerful hardware, it becomes more difficult to reproduce something similar on older hardware while keeping performance up at the same time.

“What we do is we basically, step by step, reduce the polycounts on each asset, reduce the amount of memory that each effects will take, and then eventually we make sure that we maintain that core experience intact,” he added.

It might sound like the answer is to build a Call of Duty game from the ground up specifically for Xbox 360 and PS3, but it’s understandable why Activision wouldn’t want to invest in such a project. Still, we’re quite surprised that the series’ defining gameplay pillar is a no-show in this year’s Xbox 360 and PS3 entry. It’s not even the only casualty too. We learned earlier that Black Ops 3’s co-op campaign also couldn’t be “faithfully recreated” and will ship without it on last-gen consoles.

If you’re an avid Call of Duty fan who hasn’t yet, it looks like it’s about time to jump ship to current-gen!

All versions of Black Ops 3 launch on November 6.

Battlefield 4’s Community Operations Cinematic Trailer Might Be The Game’s Best Yet

Probably the coolest Battlefield 4 gameplay trailer you’ll ever see, right here. The Two Scotsman have done it again with another cinematic masterpiece dedicated to the upcoming community-made map, Operation Outbreak.

Drawing inspiration from some of DICE’s previous Vietnam-set Battlefield games, Operation Outbreak’s latest gameplay trailer sets the action to the familiar music of Richard Wagner amidst a dense jungle backdrop. If you’ve been keeping up with the happenings within the Battlefield community, you’ve likely seen the work of The Two Scotsmen before, including this epic Star Wars Battlefront teaser and this cinematic trailer for Battlefield 4’s Night Operations DLC.

Earlier this month, developer DICE LA officially announced that the new map, born from the CTE’s Community Operations Project, will arrive as a free download for all Battlefield 4 players this Fall. Having gone through months of iteration, nearly every aspect of the map, from conceptualization to finalization, was built from player feedback. As it turns out, it appears that it might end up being one of Battlefield 4’s best looking maps too.

Battlefield Hardline: Blackout DLC Brings Free Night Maps To Visceral’s Shooter, Coming Soon

Night maps are coming to Battlefield Hardline in the game’s next big update, which developer Visceral Games plans to dish out to all players for free in an upcoming DLC package called Battlefield Hardline: Blackout.

The idea sounds pretty similar to DICE LA’s free Night Operations DLC for Battlefield 4 last month, which is a good thing. It was positively received and introduced new gameplay elements while encouraging players to consider new loadout options due to poor visibility. This time, instead of one map remake, it looks like Visceral is offering two. Here’s exactly what’s included in Hardline’s Blackout DLC:

  • Two maps – Night Job and Night Woods (night versions of Bank Job and Backwoods)
  • 1 new gadget – Night Vision Goggles
  • 2 new weapons for all classes and factions – A new version of the RO933 and a new Battle Rifle
  • New music, camos, assignments, patches, and more

“We’ve been operating in the shadows to bring every player a surprise in our upcoming update,” said Visceral, “and we’re finally ready to reveal our plan: Battlefield Hardline: Blackout is coming soon, and brings some significant content to all Battlefield Hardline players for free.”

In addition, the update also promises to introduce new improvements to Hardline’s Spectator Mode. Full patch notes will be available on release day, though no exact date has been announced just yet.

A heist taking place at night sounds a lot more likely and should fit in nicely with the game’s theme. We’ll probably get a better look at the new map remakes soon, but hopefully they’re just as dark as Battlefield 4’s Zavod 311: Graveyard Shift.

What do you think of Visceral’s free DLC offering?

Black Ops 3 Matchmaking Will Prioritize Network Quality Over Skill, Call of Duty Loyalty Program Announced

If you’re a subscriber to the belief that skill-based matchmaking was at the root of all evil in last year’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s online multiplayer experience, you’ll be happy to hear what Treyarch Director Dan Bunting recently had to say about matchmaking in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

According to Bunting’s remarks during today’s BO3Fridays live stream, Black Ops 3 matchmaking will always prioritize network quality while skill will only be weighed when the game is trying to balance teams after a lobby has been created. He explained that there’s a lot more that goes on behind the scenes than that, but it sounds like those unhappy with last year’s system will have their pub-stomping fun this year.

In conjunction with today’s live stream, Treyarch also revealed a brand new Call of Duty Loyalty Program that will reward veteran Call of Duty players who’ve previously ranked up in older titles. The program says that levels reached in either Black Ops 2, Ghosts, or Advanced Warfare multiplayer will equal specific in-game rewards in Black Ops 3, including a weapon camo, reticles, and a calling card.

CRdlXhCUYAEc_jH

The program is only available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC and players will need to make sure their platform is properly linked to their Call of Duty Account before November 6. According to the FAQ, your account will base your rewards on the game that you’ve progressed the furthest in. By the looks of it, if you’ve Prestiged at least once, you’re all good to go.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Gets New Parkour Mode Called ‘Free Run’

With brand new movement mechanics being a key innovation in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, Treyarch is putting your parkour skills to the test in a new mode the studio announced today called Free Run.

The mode, which times you as you progress through an increasingly difficult obstacle course, presents numerous challenges that requires players jump, slide, shoot, and wall-run their way to the finish line. It might not appear too difficult at first glimpse, but it looks like you’ll have to get pretty creative in order to score an unbeatable time. Gameplay was shown off earlier today during Treyarch’s Black Ops 3 Fridays live stream.

UPDATE: Studio Design Director David Vonderhaar added a few more details on the new mode via Twitter, saying that the it’s “super effing fun. Great mini-diversion and unique way to compete while waiting for your #squad to get on.” He also added that “Multiple maps/tracks come with the game. Difficulty/environment the primary difference between them.”

You’ll get to try your hand at the new mode on November 6.
