Black Ops Cold War Best-Selling Game of 2020, COD Is Best-Selling Gaming Franchise for 12 Straight Years in US

Like it or not, there’s no denying how big of a franchise Call of Duty is when it comes to overall units sold and how much the franchise has embedded itself into gamers’ lives. Case in point: Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War topped all games to be the best-selling game of December 2020, and is the best-selling game overall of 2020!

If that’s not impressive enough, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare managed to hit the #2 spot in overall sales for 2020 as well. Still not impressed? According to Mat Piscatella, Executive Director & Video Game Industry Advisor, The NPD Group, the Call of Duty franchise has been the best-selling gaming franchise in the US for a staggering 12 straight years!

https://twitter.com/MatPiscatella/status/1350078857970270209

And given how much support Black Ops Cold War is getting for free currently, I don’t see this changing anytime soon, either. Will this year’s still-unannounced Call of Duty game be met with the same level of success as its predecessors? I wouldn’t bet against it.

Speaking of Black Ops Cold War, don’t forget to check out the newest update in yesterday’s Season 1 mid-season refresh! Not only that, but another mid-season refresh is headed out to gamers this February 4.

Get This Free RE Village Avatar for PS4/PS5; Resident Evil 25th Anniversary Closed Beta Sign Ups Now Live

Who doesn’t want free stuff, right? If you own a PS4 and/or a PS5, you can get this free RE Village avatar right now! Note that this is for US (R1) accounts only. This is part of the Resident Evil Showcase set for next week, with Capcom promising our first-ever gameplay look at Resident Evil Village!

RE Village free PS4/PS5 avatar code: LEJH-M8N9-E5XF

Players who “main” non-US PlayStation accounts, you can create an R1 (US) account, redeem the code, and then use it for your main one.

In addition to the freebie, Capcom seems to have a game/demo client ready to be tested very, very soon too! There is a closed beta for an unannounced game for Resident Evil’s 25th anniversary! The closed beta test will be on PS4 and Xbox ONe, with more details to be shared during the Resident Evil Showcase.

Players can register here, and have from January 14 to January 25 9:59 a.m. EST to register. If you have a PS5 or Xbox Series X, you can partake in the closed beta by downloading the PS4 and Xbox One beta clients respectively.

Given this is a beta that has a specific scheduleon when it can be played, chances are very high that this is a multiplayer-focused game. Could it be a sequel to Resident Evil Resistance? Maybe a new Outbreak game? We’re dying to find out as much as you are! Luckily the wait isn’t that long as the Resident Evil showcase is set to air this January 21 at 5 a.m. EST(2 a.m. PST).

Black Ops Cold War Season 1 Mid-Season Update Part 2 Out on Feb. 4 – Here’s What’s in It

Earlier today, Treyarch rolled out the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Season 1 mid-season refresh that gave us a new map, a new game mode and more! It seems Treyarch has more tricks up their sleeves as the Black Ops Cold War Season 1 mid-season update part 2 is locked for February 4!

Another multiplayer map from a previous Black Ops entry is making its way out this February 4, as well as a new Zombies map as well. Head on below for the Black Ops Cold War Season 1 mid-season update part 2 roadmap as well as the info straight from Activision.

Making its way back into Black Ops Cold War is Express from Black Ops 2! We’ve included the content making its way out on February 4 below.

Express (6v6) (February 4)

Returning from Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Express arrives Feb. 4 in Black Ops Cold War as a 6v6 Multiplayer favorite, known fondly as the hi-tech train station that hosted many a jaw-dropping moment in competitive Call of Duty history.

Express is a roughly U-shaped map featuring two train tracks looping around the transportation hub’s main hall. Players can expect plenty of close-quarters combat in the hall, but should note that its glass ceiling leaves it susceptible to enemy Scorestreaks.

Long-range combat can take place across the train tracks, especially when looking out from the skybridges on either side of the map. These areas are also great places to watch one of the high-speed trains bolt by the station on one of the tracks, where it won’t hesitate to take out any Operator who doesn’t mind the gap.

Snipers Only Moshpit (In Season)

Get ready, snipers. Later in Season One, Treyarch is bringing the new Snipers Only Moshpit mode to Black Ops Cold War, where two teams of six will throw down in Team Deathmatch and Domination with all weapons restricted except sniper rifles. Lethal and tactical equipment, as well as Scorestreak weapons (such as the War Machine), will also be restricted for a pure snipers-only experience.

Endurance Mode (In Season)

Following this season’s tactical Duos variation, Black Ops Cold War’s biggest game mode is about to take the 10-team experience to a whole new level.

In the upcoming Endurance variant, 10 squads of four will drop into Alpine, Ruka, and Sanatorium to collect uranium and arm bombs throughout the match. However, after one bomb detonates, a new one will now come online to take its place, ensuring that there will always be five bombs available instead of an initial set of five that gets reduced to a single bomb. This introduces a new layer of strategy and non-stop action to these already intense 40-player battlegrounds.

The score limit will also be doubled from 500 to 1,000 in Endurance mode, making this perfect for completing MP challenges. Jump in with your squad and experience the game’s most elaborate maps in an entirely new way.

New Onslaught Maps (PlayStation Exclusive*): Raid (Live Now) and Express (Feb. 4)

PlayStation members of Requiem will face a new challenge on the legendary Multiplayer map Raid, starting today. And on Feb. 4, Express will also join the map list when it makes its Onslaught debut.

Go for Gold as you keep up with the Dark Aether Orb, which will shift to different areas of Raid’s swank Los Angeles mansion as the zombie horde becomes more fearsome. Earn Bronze, Silver, and Gold rankings by destroying enough Elites, and you’ll unlock some exclusive* rewards. You might even discover some new Dark Aether intel along the way…

New Zombies Map: Firebase Z (February 4)

With the site of “Projekt Endstation” destroyed after investigating the Dark Aether anomaly in Poland, the Requiem response team led by Grigori Weaver now turns its attention to the latest outbreak site, codenamed “Firebase Z.”

In addition to those, double weapon XP is hitting both Black Ops Cold War and Warzone tomorrow! There’s also the free Zombies trial happening for an entire week too!

We’re expecting another client-side patch to make its way out before or on February 4, though that might not be the case given the first Season 1 mid-season update didn’t require any download. Nonetheless, it’s going to be a busy next few weeks for Call of Duty fans.

DayZ Studio Bohemia Interactive Touts 14 Million Active Players, 5.7 Million Games & DLC Sold in 2020

Even with the global COVID-19 pandemic making everyone’s lives a lot harder in 2020, it seems Bohemia Interactive had quite a year. In a press release, the studio released a year in review of 2020, where impressive numbers were shared regarding the company’s four main games — DayZ, Arma 3, Vigor, and Ylands.

Bohemia Interactive Year in 2020 Review 2020:

Bohemia in 2020 by Numbers
  • Over 5.7 million copies sold (base games + DLC)
  • 14+ million players total across all Bohemia’s games
  • 6.4 million DayZ active players
  • 4.6 million Vigor active players
  • 2.3 million Arma 3 active players
  • DayZ reached top peak of concurrent players on PC since 2014 – a total number of 40,545 in February
  • DayZ saw 4.1 Million new users, with Xbox leading with 2.5M
  • 9,000+ DayZ mods created by players

In addition to those impresive numbers, the company also talked about its new Enfusion game engine which will be powering the company’s games. Here’s the latest update from Bohemia about it:

In the past year, many Bohemians have been quietly working behind the scenes on the company’s future, which will be powered by its new Enfusion engine. This investment in custom-built next-gen technology is a top priority at Bohemia and 2020 saw a ton of improvements come into being.

Developers at Bohemia have been working hard for the last couple of years to upgrade the rendering and the physical engine of Enfusion, as well as considerably improving performance with a myriad of optimization techniques. In addition, the engine hosts a large number of new features that were specifically requested by Bohemia’s game teams and the request to significantly enhance support for modding. Finally, efforts have been focused on implementing an infrastructure that will support cross-play and user-generated content across various gaming platforms. And these are just a few examples of the team’s last year accomplishments.

Bohemia expects to continue working hard throughout 2021 to make Enfusion Bohemia’s most powerful and versatile engine to date, supported by a user-friendly set of development and modding tools.

EA to Play a “Big Role” in the Future of Star Wars Games With Multiple Projects Underway

Following yesterday’s huge news that Ubisoft is developing an open-world Star Wars game, some might be wondering what this means for EA and the Star Wars brand. If you’re a fan of Star Wars Battlefront, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and other EA-published Star Wars titles, rejoice! The partnership has been confirmed to be continuing.

Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly confirmed that EA will continue to develop Star Wars games and even announced that multiple projects are well underway! According to Reilly, EA’s relationship with the company has “never been stronger.”

“We’re really proud of the games we have created with EA. We will continue working with them and our relationship has never been stronger. While we may not have a lot of details to share at the moment, we’ve got a number of projects underway with the talented teams at EA” – Douglas Reilly, VP of Lucasfilm Games

With yesterday’s announcement, some might have assumed that Disney dropped EA from future Star Wars titles given the controversy Battlefront 2 dusted up back in 2018. Thankfully, the shooter has recovered and is in a better place now, and it looks like EA has learned from its misdeeds.

For those looking forward to Jedi Fallen Order 2, or maybe another entry in DICE’s Battlefront series, we might just be getting that at some point.

AEW Console Game Will Include Campaign, Create-a-Wrestler, Aiming for 2021 Release

In November last year, an AEW console game has been announced which is being developed by Yuke’s (Smackdown), and is being helmed by none other than former AKI developer Hideyuki Iwashita. AKI, in case you didn’t know, is the developer behind WWF Wrestlemania 2000, and WWF No Mercy — wrestling games that are widely considered the best of the lot when it comes to wrasslin’ games.

While there’s no new gameplay footage to be shown off, AEW (All Elite Wrestling) Executive Vice President Kenny Omega has hsed a few details regarding the upcoming title. First off, Omega confirmed that still-untitled AEW console game will feature a camaign, and a Create-a-Wrestler feature, as well as multiplayer. One thing fans can take off the table is a General Manager (GM) mode, which will instead be exclusive to the mobile title AEW Elite GM.

As for the available wrestlers, Omega can’t confirm that just yet stating, “I can say right now that we’re not sure of how many wrestlers will be available upon release, but one thing I can say is that the number of wrestlers in the AEW is growing all the time, and the roster of wrestlers in the game will reflect that.”

They are aiming for the wrestling game to be out sometime this year, though that’s not set in stone, as the studio does not want to rush development, so no promises on a release date has been made for now.

Omega knows that a lot of wrestling video game fans are looking forward to something like No Mercy or Virtua Pro Wrestling, though they are looking to modernize the controls and game mechanics. That said, don’t expect it to be a competitor to 2K’s WWE games, as Omega states the “plan is not to compete with WWE and that style of games,” and cites how the recent 2K-published WWE games have tried to look like wrestling matches on TV, and their plan is to not use motion capture (mo-cap) and instead rely on how AKI used to do it before.

As a huge AKI wrestling fan, I’m all for this. I’m definitely excited to see how this one shapes up and if it’s anywhere near as fun as WWF No Mercy, then wrestling fans are in for a treat.

Why the End of EA’s Exclusivity Deal for Star Wars Should Be Celebrated

Earlier today, Lucasfilm Games announced that it’s partnering with Ubisoft to create an open-world Star Wars game. While the idea of an Ubisoft open-world Star Wars game is something to get your blood flowing, the major piece of news to take out of this announcement is the rapid approach to the end of EA’s exclusivity deal with Lucasfilm Games.

Since 2012, EA has been the only publisher producing Star Wars games. EA’s time with the Star Wars brand has been…interesting to say the least. There was the loot box debacle with Battlefront 2 in 2018, which spear-headed the on-going conversation surrounding gambling in games. On the flip side, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order received wide-spread acclaim and a Games Awards nomination for best action/adventure. Jedi: Fallen Order ended with the idea of a sequel, and with EA’s deal running through 2023, there’s still a chance we see Cal again. Overall, it’s been hit-or-miss with EA when it comes to Star Wars games, so the idea of other studios taking a crack at making their own intergalactic adventures should be celebrated.

Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment studio will be behind the development of this Star Wars project. Massive Entertainment developed The Division 1 and 2, so the Swedish games studio knows a thing or two about creating immersive worlds. The amount of detail they put into creating New York City and Washington D.C. was incredible. Now imagine that same level of detail, but Star Wars. Massive’s Star Wars project is still very early, but we can start making a few early assumptions on what to expect. Open-world Ubisoft games are notorious for having towers for the player to ascend in order to unlock areas of the map, so bank on that. Right now, it’s unknown what Massive’s game will be about. Could it be another Jedi adventure or maybe we’ll get to play as a bounty hunter? I think there’s a rather popular one with his own show on Disney+?

Now as I mentioned, Massive’s project is a ways out there. But seeing that this announcement was made now, it’s only natural to wonder what other studios will take a swing at Star Wars. Let’s take a look at another major Disney-owned franchise: Marvel. Over the past few years, we’ve had a number of Marvel games from different developers: Avengers (Crystal Dynamics), Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order (Team Ninja), LEGO Marvel Super Heroes (Traveller’s Tales), Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite (Capcom), and Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series (Telltale Games). While each of those games come from the same property, they’re all different experiences in their own right. This is something that should get Star Wars fans excited. Star Wars is such a huge franchise with countless characters that the ideas are limitless. There’s so much potential in the Star Wars brand and now studios will finally have the creative freedom to possibly explore it.

https://twitter.com/Nibellion/status/1349366803705819137

As with most things, there’s going to be both positive and negative ripple effects. How could ending EA’s exclusivity deal potentially damage Star Wars? With multiple studios now vying for a piece of the galactic pie, Lucasfilms Games could find themselves in a “quantity over quality” situation. Instead of getting one Star Wars game every couple years, we could see multiple games released in a single calendar year. While many can’t get enough of Star Wars, having too many games could saturate the market and introduce Star Wars fatigue. On the other hand, given the amount of backlash EA has received over the course of its Star Wars deal, Disney might be picky regarding studio pitch ideas. They may not want Star Wars games for the sake of Star Wars games, which could also restrict the amount of creativity behind future projects.

Another potential negative ripple effect is how this muddles up the water on other Massive Entertainment projects. The Division games were solid, although not necessarily the home run hitters that Ubisoft may have envisioned. In addition, Massive announced an Avatar project back in 2017. That makes three major projects, so something has to give. Apparently, Massive is still recruiting staff for the Avatar project, so that would leave a possible third Division game on the outside looking in. While I hope we eventually get a third Division game, the overall premise of an apocalyptic world has overstayed its welcome. If the choice was between The Division 3 and an open-world Star Wars, give me the space game every time.

https://twitter.com/Nibellion/status/1349385563464491014

At the end of the day, Star Wars is simply too complex and enormous of a property to be tied to one studio. EA’s exclusivity deal created too much of a hinderance on the brand and bottlenecked its overall growth. Disney choosing to branch out to other studios beyond EA will ultimately benefit the Star Wars brand moving forward. There’s always that slim chance this move doesn’t pay off, like Star Wars fatigue, but I don’t see that happening. The Star Wars brand hasn’t strayed far from the Skywalker stranglehold, so having an arsenal of studios adding their own flavor to Star Wars can help diversify the brand. There’s so much to be explored in this galaxy far, far away and the end to EA’s deal is the first step in the right direction.

The Division Developer Massive Developing Open-World Star Wars Game

While The Division 2 hasn’t been the mega success that Ubisoft has been hoping it’d be especially compared to how the first game in the franchise, it seems the publisher’s trust in developer Massive Entertainment hasn’t waned, as the publisher has entrusted the studio with a new, open-world Star Wars game!

Earlier this week, Lucasfilm Games was announced, and it looks like that means we’ll be getting AAA games that fall under the brand that’s not published by EA! Today, it’s been revealed that Lucasfilm Games has entered a partnership with Ubisoft to create this still-untitled open-world Star Wars title, which is in very early stages of development.

Heading the production will be The Division 2 director Julian Gerighty, and the game will use Massive Entertainment’s impressive Snowdrop game engine (the same one used for The Division). Other than that, there’s no other info left to parse just yet.

So what does this mean for EA? It looks like the publisher will still be developing Star Wars games moving forward, though based on Disney’s statement, that will be a crowded space very soon.

EA has been and will continue to be a very strategic and important partner for us now and going forward. But we did feel like there’s room for others – Sean Shoptaw, senior vice president of Global Games and Interactive Experiences at Disney

Aside from Star Wars, Lucasfilm Games has also announced a game based on Indiana Jones and is being developed by Bethesda.

Needless to say, we see this as a good thing, as we can’t wait to see what other studios have up their sleeves when it comes to Lucasfilm properties.
