Xbox Kinect Dead, Production Has Officially Ended

The time has come for the Xbox Kinect to give up the ghost. Microsoft has officially confirmed that production of Kinect has concluded. No longer will cameras be being made, and you can bet that software support for the hardware will also soon cease to be.

After making waves on Xbox 360 with an impressive depth camera and voice recognition microphone, Microsoft moved to include Kinect in every launch Xbox One bundle, forcing it as a mandatory add-on. Shortly after release, Kinect was downgraded to an optional extra, which allowed Microsoft to cut costs more effectively to compete with the market dominating PS4.

In an interview with Co.Design, Microsoft’s Alex Kipman and Matthew Lapsen spoke about Kinect and the journey it went on.

Lapsen: “When we introduced Xbox One, we designed it to have the best experience with the Kinect. That was our goal with the Xbox One launch … And like all product launches, you monitor that over time, you learn and adjust.”

No amount of adjustments could save the Kinect, however. Now the focus is on the upcoming Hololens, which is essentially “Kinect, evolved.”

Are you sad to see the Xbox Kinect go? Let us know.

In other Xbox One news, original Xbox backwards compatibility has launched, Hori is making an officially licensed keyboard and mouse, and the fall update brought a bevy of changes to the system

Destiny 2 Has a Giant Poke Ball Buried in Distant Shore

There’s quite a few Easter eggs in Destiny 2, but did you know there’s one that directly references Nintendo’s Pokemon? Nope, I’m not kidding. In the Distant Shore area, there’s a giant sphere half buried that looks very, very familiar — especially to Pokemon fans.

Unless my eyes are deceiving me, that’s a giant Poke Ball. Now, let’s see if people can find the rest of Team Rocket in the game.

For something more serious that’s related to Destiny 2, someone mined the PC files and found a lot of interesting content that hints at future Destiny 2 DLC. While you’re checking that out, don’t forget that there’s no planned Halloween event for the game according to Bungie.

Battlefield 1 Down Due to Scheduled Maintenance, Affecting Multiple Platforms (Update)

Update #2:

Say to safe, everything’s back to normal. Frag on, people!

Update:

Checking in now, and it seems to be back up on PS4. Will update the post again once DICE issues a formal confirmation.

Original Story:

If you’re playing Battlefield 1 and got booted out of a match (like I have), then you might be wondering what’s up. Well, good news is, it’s not your internet, but rather, Battlefield 1 down time is expected due to planned maintenance.

According to the official Battlefield 1 Twitter, the expect down time is for the Xbox One version, but I can confirm firsthand that it’s affecting the PlayStation 4 version as well.

We will be performing server maintenance for Battlefield 1 on Tuesday, October 24th with the following expected downtime for the specified platform(s):

  • Xbox One: Multiplayer will be offline for 1h starting 08.00 UTC / 1.00 AM PT

Thank you for your patience and see you on the Battlefield!
– The teams at EA and DICE

If the timing is the same, then expect servers to go up after an hour, though if it’s like the last time, expect it to last longer than that.

While you’re waiting for servers to go back up, check out official details regarding the Turning Tides expansion. If you’d rather watch than read, then see how the new weapons are looking so far in this gameplay clip

Once the servers are back up, we’ll be sure to update this post.

Gran Turismo Sport Update 1.03 Races Out, Here’s the Full Patch Notes

For those who’ve bought Gran Turismo Sport, turn on your PlayStation 4 as there’s a new title update out for the racing game today. While the GT Sport update history on the PS4 only shows “bug fixes,” there’s a lot of tweaks made.

Here’s the entire GT Sport update patch notes straight from the Gran Turismo Sport website.

Update Details (1.03)

10/25/2017

An update for Gran Turismo Sport has been released. The following is a list of features:

Main Features

– Fixed an issue where repeatedly deleting your email address from [Options] > [Email Address] would cause the game to crash;
– Fixed an issue where participating in a Drift Trial with a car featuring an exterior livery created with a custom color chip (a color chip created in the Livery editor) would result in the game crashing after the result screen;
– Fixed an issue where excessive force feedback was applied when understeering using the THRUSTMASTER® T500RS steering controller;
– Fixed -an issue wherein the THRUSTMASTER® TH8A ‘H pattern shifter’ was not properly recognized when connected to a compatible steering wheel controller.

Other improvements and adjustments

– The controller steering sensitivity of the DUALSHOCK®4 wireless controller has been increased in order to improve handling during oversteering and drifting;
– The adjustment range for a steering wheel controller’s force feedback has been broadened: it is now possible to decrease maximum torque on steering wheels with strong motor torque.
– Various other issues have been addressed.

Given the racing game’s initial sales success, there’s bound to be a lot of people looking forward to these bug fixes. Don’t forget to check out our review where we gave it an 8.5/10.

Blizzard’s digital storefront and games platform Battle.net  has a few new social features, but three’s one that’s been a request by veteran users, and that’s “gifting.” If you don’t know what gifting is, it’s a way for players to send games, DLC or other digital stuff to their chosen friend or person as a gift.

To celebrate the launch of this feature, Blizzard is giving away free Hearthstone card packs to everyone who logs into the” Gifts page” anytime today until December 31, 2017.

Aside from that, there are other ways to score free Hearthstone cards and that’s by logging in to the game’s Halloween event between October 24 to October 30! Once we know more freebies for the game, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Report: Destiny 2 Future DLC Locations and Info Leaked From PC Files

In case you didn’t know, Destiny 2 is now out on PC! While Activision might be happy with the influx of new, and paying customers, there is one thing that the publisher or developer Bungie might not be too hot on, and that’s people mining the PC files.

Over on Reddit, user TheEcumene dug through 26K (!) of audio files to see what possible Destiny 2 upcoming content awaits the player base. For obvious reasons, not everything here should be taken as fact, since some of the stuff here might be outdated, old stuff or red herrings on Bungie’s part. Without further ado, check the condensed version below and yes, some stuff might be considered spoiler-ish.

  • Voice lines about new worlds; Ganymede & The Myriad.
  • Voice lines about Destiny 1 patrol zones; Venus, Mars, Dreadnaught, Old Russia
  • Phobos and Mercury are also talked about, with Phobos hinted as a new Patrol zone.
  • Cayde-6 dies! FWC and NM have lines mentioning his death and “what comes after”. EDIT: Apparently these are in-game, so I suppose scrapped? How odd that they exist but mean nothing.
  • Shiro is on Mercury and Osiris comes to the Tower once again!
  • All Destiny 1 events will return, along with new ones. I mean things like Crimson Days, Festival of the Lost (next year), SRL, etc… Not Queen’s Wrath or anything.
  • The Reef and Prison of Elders, along with Petra and Variks, are mentioned. Seems like you can go back!
  • SRL returns, along with Marcus Ren.
  • Black Garden and the Vault of Glass are mentioned; perhaps a trip back?

I also included some things I had zero idea about (Tenebrae? Worms on the moon? New Speaker or scrapped lines?) to get a conversation going. What do these mean? Honestly I could be missing something after listening to so many files over the past few days…

In related news, Bungie has already announced Curse of Osiris” as Destiny 2’s first major expansion. There’s the “seasons” to look forward to as well, which you can read all about right here.

Do you think some of the info leaked above will be relevant in future Destiny 2 DLC or they might be old files left there for miners to find?

Ex-BioWare Dev: AAA Single-Player at EA Is “Dead,” Cites Significant Revenue in Microtransactions as Cause

Electronic Arts recently closed down game developer Visceral Games (Dead Space, Battlefield Hardline) after the Star Wars game the studio is contracted to develop needed a “pivot” in design according to executive vice president Patrick Soderlund.

It seems that the pivot took many by surprise and in doing so spurred many to write to Twitter and Reddit in protest against the move, stating that the game was doomed to become “a microtransaction infested pile of rubbish” as one commenter called it.

A move like this does hint at the game featuring a much more casually driven experience filled with microtransactions, as the current fad of having loot boxes or micro DLC is sweeping the industry as more and more publishers realize the profit increase they bring in. This sentiment isn’t just a conspiracy theory or outlandish thought as plenty of internet commenters have assumed, this is “definitely a thing inside EA,” says Manveer Heir, a gameplay designer who spent seven years at EA, in an interview on Vice’s Waypoint podcast.

They are generally pushing for more open-world games. And the reason is you can monetize them better. The words in there that were used are ‘have them come back again and again.’ Why do you care about that at EA? The reason you care about that is because microtransactions: buying card packs in the Mass Effect games, the multiplayer. It’s the same reason we added card packs to Mass Effect 3: how do you get people to keep coming back to a thing instead of ‘just’ playing for 60 to 100 hours?

Heir goes on to say that:

You need to understand the amount of money that’s at play with microtransactions. I’m not allowed to say the number but I can tell you that when Mass Effect 3 multiplayer came out, those card packs we were selling, the amount of money we made just off those card packs was so significant that’s the reason Dragon Age has multiplayer, that’s the reason other EA products started getting multiplayer that hadn’t really had them before, because we nailed it and brought in a ton of money. It’s repeatable income versus one-time income.

“The single-player AAA game at EA is dead,” was the most chilling point to hear. After a decade and a half of incredible single-player games produced by EA such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Knights of the Old Republic, hearing that once crowned achievements in linear storytelling games are now shelved for open world games and multiplayer games that can be monetized with microtransactions for players to “spend $15,000 on Mass Effect multiplayer cards,” will not only be a hard pill to swallow, but might be the needle that pops the profit bubble as players potentially migrate to other games made by other developers that don’t feature them.
